EVENING STAR. Largest Circalation in the District | CROSBY S. NOVES.....0000.Editere SESE WASHINGTON OITY: i WEDNESDAY... JUNE 2, 1869, S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. | SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TRLE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. ‘Tur Wacutxorox axp Brrrao RAILRoap. ‘Washington basso many emoryo railroad pro- jects on band that she has not been abie to give ue concentration of attention to any particu- Jar line. The latest whose claims has been presented to the attention of our citizens is that | oposing a great North and South line be- een this city and the lakes. A delegation of jgens from the northern part of Maryland visited us Intely to urge the advantages to | ‘Washington to be derived from the consiruc- | tion of this road. At that time mention was made of meetings to be beid along the lineot the proposed road. im its behalf. One of these | meetings has since been held at St. Mary's, | Pennsylvania, presided over by How. Et. R. Euddle, of New York, and which seems to have | bad large and influential attendance. In the | course of the proceedi a letter from Hallett Kilbourn, Esq., Secretary of the Citizens’ Rail- rosd Committee of this city, and the proceed- ings of the Washington Board of Trade in the same connection, were read and seemed to give much satisfaction. ‘The facts set forth at this meeting in regard to the local value of this road to the authracite coal trade, the iron ore trade, and other traffic, and the necessity of 3 low grade railway trom Buffalo to Washington to affiliate with the Pennsylvania canal system shows that that there are really some pretty heavy in- terests enlisted in theenterprise. Phtladelpbis Was warned tha: in aiding New York to build, railway from the Fort Wayne railroad via the Mahoning.ard neglecting the occupancy of the water-shed between the Potomac and Juniata may see her commerce dragged at the beels of the irom horse to rival cities. One of thespeakers was warmed up to the point of saying that “What the round knob and hill tops of Gettysburg and Waterloo were to the armies ot Bonaparte and Lee those plateaus will be to the commercial imterests of Philadelphia, should Baltimore and Washington cities detail & Meade and Wellington to hold these hills! As well might Philadelphia attempt toempty the sea as to compete for the western trade with Baltimore, (in possession of this vantage ground), or with New York for the commerce ot the lakes, by any other route than the Juniata Valley, and thence to Erie, Buffalo, etc.” ‘The matter of getting 9 charter was discussed, and in the range of arguments presented why Congress should authorize the constraciion of the road was the novel one that in view of the certainty of the acquisition by us of the British Possessions on this continent,a military, postal nd commercial railroad trom the Likes and Canadas to the national armory, and the po- litical heart of the nation, was a military ne- cessity. Should Congress, however, fail to charter the road, it was pointed out that the dissevered links now built may be united under the free railroad law of Peunsylvania. ‘The meeting, it should be added, did some- | thing more than talk, and pledged itself to Fausing some $50,00 for the construcuon of the road. Rev. Mr. Sunderland, of this city, seems to be bidding for the chaplaincy of the Chandler- Butler expedition against England, if we may yudge by the tenor of his discourse before the New School Presbyterian Assembly in New York om Monday iast. The circumstance | ‘Which called it forth,—being the recommenda- tion of the committee on bills and overtures that prayer be offered up throughout the church for the preservation of peace between the Uni- | ted States and Great Britain,—would seem to be a sufficiently harmless and Christian-like Proposition of itself; but the bellipotent parson | availed himself of the opporiunity to give the | British Lion a drabbing he will not be likely | and to torget very soon. We like these periodical warlike ebuilitions, as well on the part of Preachers as of politicians. They aiford a fine field for the display of patriotic pyrotechatcs, and at the same time serve to keep that fearful ‘Wild fowl, the Lion-and-Unicora, in a proper state of subjection, without serious expenditure of money or loss of life. CosvENTION OF COLORED Rerusticays nm MaRYLAND.—A Convention of Colored Repub- heans of Maryiaud assembled in Baltimore yesterday. Several of the counties were not represented. A number of speeches were made ‘ud some forty odd resolutions adopted; ex- pressing confidence in President (rant and his Administration; thanking Postmaster Cress. well for bis efforts to elevate their race; nexing that colored apprentices be admitted to all branches of trade, and that that no colored me- ehanic shall be prohibited from any trade. thanking the President and Federal officenold- ers for the appointment of colored men to po- Tne sensation just now in the j and theatrical circles of New York seems to bs & row between Mr. George H. Butier, unde- ‘stood to be the theatrical critic of the The Spirit of the Times, and & Mr. Henderson, manager of one of the burlesque troupes at present piay- ing in that city. We have called it a row, ‘hough it seems to be a rather one-sided affair, in which the blows, both in @ newspaper and prize ring sense, are all given so far by the first named person. We know nothing of the merits of the quarrel in question—in which 8 woman will probably be found, as usual, to be in some way mixed up—nor do we know or care anything about Mr. Henderson, who 1s doubtiess as bad as need be; but we feel impelled to say, in the interest of journalism, that more indecent and scandalous piece of writing than the attack on him which appeared in The ritof the 2d ult. we have never seen in any newspaper makizg claims to respectability. All right minded people must consider it a reproach to the proiession that the columns of a public journal should be made a medium of so much personal spicem, sud most of all those of a periodical setting itself ap as “the American Gentieman’s Newspaper." If articles in the style of the one under notice are the literary pabulum of the “American Gentleman,” in Heaven's name keep from before us the chosen diet of the American Loafer! «Judge Francis, of the Troy Times,” has at last sailed for Europe. We trust the New York papers will survive bis absence; but i will be very hard on them, as he nas been the unfailing subject of an item for them for some three months past M’He Tostee took her farewell of the Ameri- can stage in New York on Monday evening THE POSTPONED ANNUAL FESTIVAL the fit of the PRUSPRUT HILL MEIERY Twit be hs = the new Bchusizen Park a SOAY. °° COMMITTED OF ABBANGEMERTS.
