EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the Distriet CROSBY S. NOYES. WASHINGTON OITY: MONDAY.............+--+- MAY 10, 1969, Editer. S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. SER OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. A Urstoricat DAY.—To-day, May 10th, 1-69, Witnesses an event which must pass Into history Ss ome of the most important of the cen- tury, as well im respec: to its immediate as its future effect?upon this country and the human race. We refer. we need hardly say, to the Jnyung of the Inst rail of the comtinaous line which spans the contineat, and connects the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans by 80 iron track, over which the transit may be mad: itBout necessary change of person or freight ‘This consummation, which bat a tew yearsago seemed so far off. occurred at 247 (Wash- ington time) this afternoen. as will be seen by ference to the report of the incidents attend- ing it, which will be found m another columa. It only remains for us to congratulate the enter- prising and liberal spirits who conceived and executed a work at once so useful and so stand, and the country which is to enjoy its golden and perennial fruits. A more pleasant duty we have rarely bad to perform. The New York World inquires what has become of the iarge sum of money raised in that city for the purpose of erecting a monu- ment to Mr. Lincoln in Union Square, %),000 im amor This is a pertinent ques- on, and it is time it were answered by the associations organized for the purpose inaicated 1a other places, as well as by that in New York. Although hundreds of thousands of dollars bs ve been contributed in different parts of the country toward building monuments to Dir. Lincoln, so far, we believe, the only one yet completed is the one im front of the City Hall in this city, which was built by volunta- Ty contributions by the people of Washington- Indeed, we have not heard of any other that is ever respectably under way. Newspaper scribblers and small fry politicians whose stock im trade consists of abuse of Washington. tans for alleged meanness and dependence will please make a note of these facts. The wisdom of reducing the internal revenue tax on distilled spirits is pretty well estab- lished by the amount received from that source with the tax at fifty cents per galion, as com- pared with the receipts when it stood at two dollars. The books of the Internal Revenue omice sbow that during the first month after the reduction there was little or no change, as contrasted with the same month of the previ- ous year; but after tha: time the receipts from that source ran up to double the sum formerly collected, and they Bave averaged that ratio ever since—some months standing below, but generally standimg above, twice the amount realized during previous corresponding pert- ods. Indeed, itis thought that the revenue for the whole fiscal year with the tax at fifty cents per gallon will considerably more than double the rece’p's for the last year, whem it stood at twodoliers. This result will, we apprebend. meet the expectations of those most in favor of the reducion. One check of $300 was dersou & Co..of Williamsport, others by the National Bink of Waynesbo! Franklin county, Pa..of $116 W0each. Special Agent Fred. This false ackowiedee- ment was made by the criminal im order that he might secure the et due for lanas in the bauds of the agents. obtaining the information Mr. Depro started for Williams- port. Pa, where he ‘allea on the Bank of Sanderson & Co, and there found that the chéck bad been cashed last November; but jd get no information as to the person who PI - Two checks had been left for collection from the 9th National Bank of New York. The money was coliec'ed of that bank the person who left the cheeks calling tn 8 tew days after and receiving the cash. Mr. Uepro next visited the Williamsport Post Office kad after careful investigation of the case, arrested a man whom he was satisfied was the perpetrator of the forgeries. While he was in custody he attempted to destroy an en- vyelope, which proved to be one of Kent é& Goldsburg’s envelopes. This was additional evidence of his guilt, aud he thereupon made a fall confession. It appears that the envelope was addressed to Levi Miller, Schayikill cou: ty, Pennsylvania, instead of Levi Miller, Pine Grove, Schuylkill county, Penusylvanis, which shows that if it had been dressed to Pine Grove it would probably ni have fallen into the hands of Levi Miller, No. 2. The prisoner is now in jail at Williamsport. Daring The month ef April Mr. Depro snd special agent Gaylor of New York, succeeded im tracing up twelve bounty checks for $100 each, h were addressed to different parts of the country and were paidon forged endorse- ments to E. F. Teneyck, an actor of Fisk's Grand Opera House, New York, who repre- sented himself to the endorser under an as- sumed name. The party was arrested and held to answer the offence uuder $5,000 bonds.
