SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. ‘Visitors to Philadelphia on the occasion of the Odd Fellows’ celebration, noticed with much interest the admirable provision made | there for supplying water to thirsty men and | animals om the public streets. At various poims granite fountains Bave been erected, | ‘with jets snd drinking cups for the public, and supplied with ample basins for the use of nimals—horses, dogs, and cattle. The suppo- | sition was that the city authorities were en- titled to the credit for this good work, but it ‘Was ascertained that the fountains have been erected by an association of philanthropic and Public spirited citizens, under the name of the «Society for the Erection of Public Drinking Fountains.” Washington City needs water drinking foun- ‘sims, and we trust they may be provided, esther by the City Councils or by charitable citizens. The temperance organizations could not undertake a more practical measure in furtherance of their cause than by providing Sn abundance of these foun'sins. Thousands are driven to drinking saloons to quench their thirst, thereby acquiring a taste for spirituous liquors, who would preter to drink water if within their reach. Sut the great sufferers are the four-footed animals, who are umable to make known their wants, and undoubtedly endure terribly from thirst daring the summer months. Todemonstrate the usefulness of such fountains, it is stated that at one of them re- cently erected in London five thousand per- Soms were seen to drink in a single day, ana at ‘another, where three jets are comstantiy flow- ing, more than eight theusand persons were known to drink in the same space of time. Mr. Froude in his inaugural address spoke Of theimportance of educated men being pre- pered to earn their living outside of their literary pursuits. He said that the rewards ot Hiterary work were very small, and that they were very unequally adjusted. It was only by accident that a work of great genius became immediately popular in the sense of having a remunerative sale. For himself, he admired the rule of the ancient Jews, that every man, of whatever grade or calling he might be, should learn some handicratt, so that, while he might be teaching the world like St. Paul, ne might. like Paul, be bardensome to no one. No man should be regarded as entitled to live unless he ‘was able to keep bimself from starving by his Own efforts. In refatation of the objection that education and physical labor do not well agree, be said: “Itburts no intellect to be abie to make a floor or Bammer a horse-shoe; and if you ean de esther of (hese you have nothing to fear from fortune. If he stood the test, and snowed t, £ would insist that ne should in some way make himself mdependent of the Profits of inteliectaal work for subsistence.” $$ We are not sorry to say that the speculators butter and potatoes have come to grief. In New York the farmers are compelled to sell the butter amd potatoes which they have been keeping sll the winter at a lower prics than they would have obtained for the same articles sm October and November last. A Michigan paper says that farmers in portions of that State are obliged to seli potatoes at fifteen cents Per bosbel, for which they refused $i 50 iast Fell. Somejof them are very neavy losers, as Jast year’s crop was unusually heavy. At White Pizeon they bave been shipping for several weeks trom 1,500 to 3,000 bushels each ¥,Snd yetit is estimated that there sre at least 75,0) bushels of potatoes im that vicinity still unsold. It is the same in the Western par! of New York, New Jersey aud New England. ‘The Brown-Sprague spat bas found its way smto the loca! politics of Providence. The present Mayor—Mr. Doyle—wants very much to be re-elected, and undertook to cultivate the Sprague influence by writing letters ana tele- sTams to the Senator endorsing him “up to th« hub,” and saying very ancomplimentary thivgs about the other million dollar fellows Unfortunately for Doyle, Sprague publishes bis (Tboyle’s) letters im the Gio, and the pother raised about the aspiring Mayor's ears is terri- ble.
