Stevens and Phelps, receivers of the Washington and Alexandria Railroad, under authority of the United States Court of Virginia, haye on the south bank of the river a number of piles for the railroad bridge across the Potomac and now await authority frcm the courts of this District to repair the bridge and make it safe for the passage of trains as usual. This bridge has now been unsafe for tutly two months, to the great detriment of threngh and local travel and it is to be hoped that the requisite order Will be soon given. This petition, which will be presented to- ght at the Councils, bas beea prompted as well for the protection of the oysters themselves ‘as well for the preservation of the health of community, as it is alleged they are not fit to eat during warm weather. ———.— — AMPUTATED.—The reported death of Mr. Richard Harrington ou Saturday last, who had bis leg broken on Fridsy,and was otherwise injured from the falling of a scaffold to a house at the corner of 6th and L streets, which he Was assisting in painting, was incorrect. He is still living, though with but little hopes of recovery. Yesterday morning, the broken leg was amputated, which now leaves bim legless, ashe lost one of then during the late war.
