He therefore recommends the re. peal of that law so far as it concerns naval af. fire, ond states that be can bave a greater amount of work done if at liberty to employ men under the old sys'em, as he can procure pieuty of abie mechanics who will work ten of twelve bours per day. Mr. Scofield, chatr- man of the committee, ho wever, is ene of the strongest triends of the eigat hour cause, and a majority of the members of the committee are also warm friends of the eight hour bill. No Action will therefore be taken upon the mat- ter, the committee already having agreed not to meet again this session unless rendered necessary by urgent business.
