J.” AT HOME. ‘The western papers have been sendin; their “Specials” to Greenville, Teanessee, to get up | Jobnsomia, in view of the anticipated arrival of the ex-President at his home. The imdus- triows Knights of the quill have ransacked the pretty little village of Greenville for materia! and have altogether pretty falthfally earned their money by the amount of matter supplied to their papers, concerning the antecadents of the seventeenth President of the United States. 1: issomewhat remarkabie, considering the conspicuous position occupied by Andrew Jobnson before the country during his term of Office that the enterprising -‘Speciale” have Zot sooner paid a visit to Greenville. Andrew Johnson was born at Raleigh, N. C., on the 2th day of December, 1808, and he is conse. quently now over sixty years of age. His father died when he was but four years of age. | Atten years he was apprenticed to a tailor. He never went to school a day in his life, but managed to learn himself to read after a {ash- von. Just before his time was out he ran away from bis master for no particular reason except the Johnsonian one that “he wanted to.” After wandering sbout from place to place | in North Carolina for some time, he put his | mother and a little property into a one-horse | cart and croseed the mountains into Tennes- | see, halting at Greenville. H- was then eigh- | teen years of ag. Evem at that tim: he seems to have shown the ‘urn for disputstion he has | displayed so notably in his political career. Greenville College is situaced four m ies from the villagr, and the studeats at that time nad formed a debating club, and Reld meetings at the college every week. Johnson used to walk | out regularly after his day’s work at tailor- img to attend them, aod there he first tinguished himself. He was self-possessed, pertinacious, with a memory that enabled him to make the most of bis moderate stock of | knowledge, and he soon came to be recognized | 8s a pretty hard customer to deal with in de- | bate. The capacity to express Rimself with readiness in disputation served to place him | in the memorable position of Alderman, and from thence the public is familiar with the | events of bis history. The dwelling place in Greenville, to which he retires trom the White House, isa modest two-story brick, and is mow occupied by Mrs. Stover. bis daughter. Senater Patterson, his | Vi! son-in-law, resides at Henderson, six mules from Greenville. We believe that Mr. John- | son left Washington worth about £75,000; con- sequently the “Specials” are somewhat oat in | their vaticmmations that he mast. perforce, go | back to the needie, or write for the New York | Ledger, fot & livelihood. With his moderate | tastes snd small family be can manage to live | quite comfortably, in an inexpensive tocatity like Greenville, om the interest of his money | ‘weil invested. Bat certainly there is too much combatitive- ress im bis composition to permit him to settle down to the hum-drum life of a Tennessee village. (Quite evidently he means to don the | Political harness again. He will contest with Sokes for the Governorship of Tennessee, and hopes to secure that and make it the steppin, stone for a return to the United States Senate. ‘More than that, we happen to know that before he left the White House he stated to friends nis incere conviction that he should again be returned to the Presidency. Our informant | expressed to us the con that Jobason must be crazy to entertain notion: but if bets mad, there Is considerable method in his madness. ‘As regards his chances of an immediate | Teturn to political lite they would, undoubted- ly, be good but for the stiff franchise law ia force im Tennessee. His cid adversary, Brownlow, must bave had a grim forethought of purpose in fashioning that law to spoil the | aspirations of A. J , for a new swing upon the political cirete from the sou of Tennessee | Evidenty the ex-President must bide his time | im his two-story brick at Greenviile uo: it | things work.” The dissatisfaction seems to b> growing | 7, among the Republicans of Virginia, or those favoring the Congressional plan of reconstrac- om, with the State ticket pat in nomumation at Petersburg. The Richmond Wiig publishes a card signed by two hundred and sixty-eight | individuals living in all parts of the State, who | say. “The undersigned, citizens of Virginia, | and earnest friends of the restcration of our State to the Union under the Reconstruction acts of Congress, believe that the time has fully come when @ determined and zealous effort should be made to rescue the Republican party of Virgima from the management and control of designing and seifish politicians. We are satisfied that the convention which assembled at Petersburg on the 9th instant did not reflect the feelings and wishes of the Republicans of the State, and that the means used to secure the nommmation of the persons who are placed | upon the State ticket were such as cammot se- cure the sanction or approval of those who de- sire to promote the welfare of eur people. They then proceed to urge all the friends of | Teconstruction to suppor: the following ticket: For Governor, Gilbert ©. Walker, of Norfoik | Cty; for Lieutenant Governor, John F. Lewis, ot Rockingham county; for Attorney General, James C. Taylor, of Montgomery county. ‘The Democrats, taking courage from this Tupture in the Republican party, Bope for an easy victory im the coming election, and appar- ently they will succeed in obtaining control ot the State, unless the Republicans speedily heal | their aiviston. ‘The revival of the Joint Com nittee on Re- trenchment, with the powers neretofore con- ferred upon that body, may be properly re- warded as & hopeful sign in connection with Sef vice, as there is reason for believing that by the Dext session the committee will + and Mr. Welker on the part of the House,—_bave already had large ex- perience in the matters especially confided to the commutes, and they Bave also preity well defined ideas as te the retorms needed. pany of Robertson's beautiful comedy of “School.” The play is of a domestic character, peneunrcar <fe-wimtrtat ise Ene From J. At tnat time, bowever, the bank,in view of tbe many demands upon the Mayor. waived their cla! d continued to pay out the monies received by them from the Corporation, on properly certified checks, notwithstanding the corporation was indebted to them, but when a statement of the account was made out, the amount loaned by the bank to the corporation wes exhibited as part of said account, From these statements we are satisfied-of the imcorrectness of the report above referred to, 88 to the purchase of claims against the Cor- poration. Whenever the bank bas purchased claims against the city, they have stood in Precisely the same relation to the Corporation ‘as other creditors. Tae Frence Ursea.—“La Perichole” was Tepeated last night at the National Theater and 88 atthe first representation was flxely sung and scted. The street song in the first act,a duet between La Perichole (Irma) and Paguillo (Avjac) first woke up the applause of the audience, and soon afwerwards Irma’s singing of the letter romance, the farewell to Piquillo, was so deeply sympathetic and beautiful that it elicited a rapturous encore. Ii Grandira is the air of the opera, and occurs as a chorus and afterwards as a duet. Les Femmes, a duet between Irma and Aujac in the thirdtact, isso pretty an air, and accompanied with such vivacious gesticulations by Irma, that it Teceived several encores. Irma possesses a finely sympathetic voice, which she knows well how to manage, aud Aajac is the best French tenor that has yet appeared in opera touge. The old favorites Leduc and Lagriffoul, were excellentin their roles, and the entire opera was well produced. fo-night “La Grand Duchess.” In Pennsylvania the question of women holding office is about to be given @ practical solution, without toushing at all upon tne ground taken by those opposed to or indiffer. ent about woman suffrage. Miss Maria L, ‘Sanford, a young lady who has been teaching & publicschool in Chester county, is urged for County Superiztendent of Common Schools There is nothing in the laws of that State pre- venting & woman from holding the office, and she is strongly su pported for the position.
