Important Decision oF THE SUrREME COURT ON GoLD ConTRacTs.—In the Supreme Court, this morning, Chiet Justice Chase de- livered the opinion of the court im the case of Bronson’ ‘cutors against Rbodes, being one of the cases recently argued before the court on an appeal from the Court of Appeais for the State of New York. The opinion of a majority of the court is that contracts made payable 1 coim can be specifically enforced, and canno. be sutisfled by legal tender notes. Messrs. Justices Swayne and Davis concurred as to the general resuits, but read different opinions, Mr. Justice Miller dissented. This decision does not involve the genera! question of the consiitutionality of the lega; tender act, but affirms the integrity of contracts made prior to taat legislatioa by Congress, THE ACCEPTANCE OF GENERAL GRANT AND Srgaxen CoLrax.—tn the Seaate this mora- ing Mr. Morton preseated the following com- munication from General Grant in answer to the noiification of his election Gent omen> Pleise notify the two Houses o Congress of my ecceptance of the importau’ trust which you have just notified me of my election as President of the United States, ana say tothem that it will be my endeavor tha they, and those whoelected me, shall baye no Teason to regret their accion. THe LINCOLN ASSASSINATION—A SINGULAR STATEMENY.—A correspondent of the New York Commercind telegraphs to that paper from this ¢'ty the following: “The Congressional Committee has obtained ne important evidence in relation to the ns- sassination of President Lincoln. A servant of the Russian Minister, in July, 1862, has testi. fied during the examination of W. W. Corco- ran’s claim by the Seuate Committee, that at dinner party given at the Rusuan Le zation, Senator Bayard said he would give $1 ny One Who Would assassinate Mr. L a. i Mr. Corcoran added that he would give ten times that sum. The Committee summoned old man Dobner, who was then outler to the Russian Minister, to corroborate the testimony of the witness. But Dohner has thus far re- fused to testify, claiming diplomatic privileges on the ground thathe was then employed xt the French Legation. He has been excused uniil Wednesday next, when he will have to testify or be brought before the Senate for con tempt.” No one who knows Senator Bayard or Mr Corcoran attach any credit to this reported eyi- dence. Mr. Dobner, who is referred to by the correspondent, was steward to Mr. Bodisco while the latter represented the Kussian Gov ernment at this Capital, The Minister reside, in Georgetown, and Mr. Dobner built hum:e! @ house in that city, where he still resides.
