A meeting of colored citizens of the First ‘Ward, for the purpose of appointing delegat-s to the National Suffrage Convention to be held iB this city on the 13th instant, was held last ight at the Colored Baptist Church, corner ot Ioth and I streets. After some litte difficalty, Thomas Martin was chosea chairman, an Jobn E. Clark secretary. After a statement by the Chair of the objects of the meeting, John Loudou: of consid. — peor rg Joba F. At the conclusion of his remarks, Rob’t Pey- ton inquired by what authority the colored citizens of Washing‘on proposed to send del- Eates to the approaching National Couveation. ‘Was no: Washington represented by the whole United States ? Jobn F.Cook stated in jy that the Ni tional Convention had been cided upon by a convention which bad been held in Baltimore, nnd that am invitation bad been exteuded tw the citizens of Washiugton to send two delegates from each ward. ‘The question was then taken on the motion to lay Jerome Jobnson’s resolations on the able; which motion was carried. A motion Ww #ppoint a committee of three to Suggest the names of two persons &s suitable elegates was adopted, when the Chair ap- pointed Alex. Henderson, Elza Williams and George Forrester. The committee, afer a briet retirement from the room, re:urned with the fotlowiag nomi- nees :—Rey. D.W. Auderson and Rob’t Thomp- son. Conflicting motions were made with regard to the disposition of the committee's report, when John Loudoun, who bad been on the floor balf the time of the meeting, making m- tions aud withdrawing them in the same b, d that the report be laid on the . Cook in the report of the committee; and anuther motion was made to insert the name of Francis Pay- erns in the piace of John F. Cook. ‘The merits of the various nominees were then discussed. Robert T! begged leave to witadraw bis name. as be did not wish to throw discord im the meeting, and, besides, he had doubts about his ability to serve the colored people of Washington with sufficient credit. n withdrawing bis own name, he endorsed the nomination of John F. Coox. Cornelius Ulark attempted to speak, when Jobn Loudoun interrupted, whereupon he (Clarke) turned around and remarked to Lou- doun, “You are drunk, sir, and bad better go home to ved. 1 mean what I say, and am re- sponsible, here or elsewhere.” Loudoun, still on bis feet and tottering, replied, “1 impate that to your ignorance.” Cornelius Clark resumed bis remarks, 1 ad- yocacy ofthe nomination of Rev. D. W. Aa- derson and John F. Cook, as men well quali- fied to faithfully and creditablyrep resent the in- terests of the colored people ct Washington Both were old and well-known citizens, and should be preferred over the young men or some who were new-comers here. Thomas Martin here resigned the chair to the secretary, and proceeded to address the meet- ‘ng in opposition to the appointment of John F. Cook as one of the delegates. He (C20k) had already been honored with a position in the Board of Aldermen byhis constituents, aud that should be enough honors tor him. There were a number of other experienced and intel- ligent colored men in the ward, in private life. who would make good representatives, and such only should be chosen. The discussion was continued at considerable length and amid much confusion; after which the question was taken on the nominations of Joba F. Cook and Rev. D. W. Anderson, who were elected. A committee of two were appointed to wait upon Rey. D. W. Anderson and inform him of his election as a delegate; during whose ab- sence, Rober: Thompson addressed the meeting and exhorted the colored people of Wasbing- on, and especially of the First Ward, to desist from the disorderly proceedings which had generally characterized their detiberations; for they would never r -* to the dignity of the white race unless pr. ecoram were observed among themselves. In couciu- tion, be paid a high compliment to the charac- ter of the delegates who had been elected, and Predicted important results from the delibera- fons of the National Cgnvention to which they had been accredited as representatives, Briet_remarks were made by Wm.
