The repr2- sentation of those Sts'es in Congress, it is estimated, is now sbout ome-fiith larger than at would be under that article of the Coastitu- tion, which says :—* When th> right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for Pres- ident or Vice President....is denied to any of the male imbabitants of such State, being twen- ty-one years of age and citizens of the United States, OF in Suy way abridged, except for par. theapation in rebellion or other crime, the basis of representation thecein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male efi shail bear to the whole number of male cit zens, twenty-one years of age, in such Stat The New York Tritene, we see, suggests that the question may arise sooner, and that the Clerk of the House may have to decide it when the members elected in these Siates, after the adoption of this article, present themselves to be sworn in on the Fourtn of March next. F. Sands, Superintendent ot the Navai Obseryatory.on the brilliaut Meteoric display of November 13th, 18, with a star cbart of the tracks of the most couspicuoas, by Prof. J.R. Eastman, U.S. Navy. From this report it appears that the display commenced 8 little before midnight op the bth of Novem- ber, aud increased in brilliancy and beauty as the morning advanced. The observations were continued until near 6a. m., at which time the officers at the Observatory bad counted 5,075 and bad sueceeded in tracing on the chart the trseks of nimety meteors. Considering th number aud brilliancy of the meteors, their magnificent trams and the magnitude of the meteoric <toup through which the earth passed, this shower was unquestionably the grandest that has ever been witnessed at this observa+ tory. Prof. Eastman says: “Ltis highly probable, from the number ot meteors seen Very near sunrise, that the suower continued for a considerable time after we could not observe it on account ot th ing sunlight: od though we have po accurate data in regard to the time when the shower ceased, it 18 safe to conclude that the breadth of that portion of the ring through which we passed could not have been less than 115,000 miles, much g-eater than the breadth of the stream we passed through in I-67, though not so densely packed with meteors. The election tor a successor to Gov. Morgan in the United States Senate takes place in the New York Legislature on the 19th of January. It locks now as if Mr. Morgan would be re- elected without difficulty. The western end of the Siate to oe sure claims the Senatorship by rotation, but has three candidates—Gor. Fenton, Mr. Putnam, and Mr. Noa Davis, and there is no disposition to conceatrate upon any one of these gentlemen user S Pre Hay, from the East Indies, is now beginning to be imported into England. Re- cently, one thousand tons of this kind of horse fodder were brought from Bombay to Liverpool. The grass is reported to be sweet and fragrant, but it is seared that new kinds of insec's, dangerous to vegetation, may be intro- duced in the bates. Let us then, fellow citizens, come up man- fully and cheerfally to this glorious work of lighting up the darkened countenances of the desponding, ard removing the burden from the heart that is oppressed with sorrow and care, Let us all rejoice that there is an oasis, a ver- dant spot, in this wilderness, where we may full the banners of strife, and cultivate the sublime virtue of Holy Charity. And if we rightly perform this duty, we are assured, upon authority which cannot be questioned, that even “a cup of cold water” given to the fainting or the thirsty, shall be homorably recognized, in “the Great Day” of ultima‘e adjudication, and the Judge of all the earth will bid us welcome to the world of light and joy, where love shall beam from every eye, ‘distil from every lip, shower from the fingers of every band, and create around the ransomed throng an atmosphere which angels wili seek to iphale, and in which God himself will delight to dwell.
