Invitatioas to the number of two or three hundred had been distributed to families in almost every eirele of society. The childrea, accompanied by their parents or friends, commenced to arrive at an early hour, and by seven o’clocx the spacious East Room was thronge4, pre- senting & scea ver before witnessed within walls. The collation was next on the programme, and the party pasced into the supper-room, where the tables were cov- ered with delicacies. Aiter supper the daace ‘was renewed, and kept up until about eleven ovclock, when clo:ks and hats were donacd, and the gay assemblage dispersed. The soiree was most enjoyable in every respect. During the entire evening tne President, to- getber with Senator Patierson, Mrs. Patterson, Stover. Colonel Moore, Colonel Morrow, and others of the household were present, and spared no exeriion to secure the pleasure of those present. Among the families of promi- nebt persons represented were tho.e of Becre- taries Browning, McCulloch, Welle3, aad Randall; General Jeffries, Admiral Radford, General Zeilin, General Vincent, General Michler; the Eeglish and Ruszian Ministers, the Swiss Consul General; also, ex-Mayor Wallach, J. Smith, of Medford, were married at the residence of the distins aished Senator, at Natick, on Cnristmas day. Lieutenant Smith was one of the earlies volunteers during the late war, and made the sTand march to the sea with General Sherman. The bridal presents were cesily and elegant, and conspicuous among them was an autograph letter from General Grant, regretting his ina- bility to be present wishing the young couple many years of happiness in their mar- ried life. After the wedding dinner the bridal party departed en route for this city. WASHINGTON, D: C., WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 30, 1868. Fink Arts.—A piciure now to beseen at ‘Markriter's, 467th street, is well wor:h in- spection by conuoisseurs, and we think they ‘will they thank us for calling their atieutioa tosoeffective a work of art. It isa “White Mountain Scene” by E. P.Tesia The White Mountain’ ia their eombiaations of stern gran- ithe rocks, sparkling cascades, and secluded vallies, afford studies for the artist in the way of true mountain scenery to be found no where else in the coantry. These capabilities have been made avatiabie by Testa with great effect; indeed we are by no means sure that his is not the best Waite Mountain picture yet made, He is very succes:fal im his rocks, large masses of which make up a vigorous right foreground. B+low the spectator, in a cool glen, aresome deer drinking at aclear pool formed by acaseade which comes by white ‘eaps down the mountain side. Behind, the everlasting rocks are piled up tothe sky which with its placid blue, and tranquil, fieecy clouds affords fitting foil and contrast to the trowning mountain side and rugged crest. Why will not Testa or Shattuck paint the mountains—Washingten and Adams, for in- stance—in what we consider their most im- pressive aspect, when they are ontlined against the sammer sky at dusk, in all their wonderfal solemnity of shadow ! At Markriter’s we notice an admirable chromo, after one of Gifford’s brilliant Adiron- dack mountain pictures; atso, another of dif- ferent style, @ pastoral scene, in the fertile val- ley of the Connecticut, after Hart. Perhaps some of our readers have noticed the sale recently in New York of a picture by the French painter Bouguerean, for an almost fabuloussum. A copy of this picture, as like it As one pea is to another, is now to be sean at Markriter’s. It represents simply a mother and child. The child—a girl of eight or ten— bangs by her motner’s neck, with upturned face. The picture is good generally, but the tace of the girl—rendered so as to show the pearly teeth, pink gums, dimpled cheek, and soft eye of the happy, loving girl—is something wonderful in spirit aad truthfuiness. Gey. GRayt and fomily left town at noon to-day.
