Lathrop, Ludington & Uo, one of the oldest ana lore ary gtets ae in New York, suspended om Saturday last. ‘They passed through the troubles of 1857 aud the disvurbances incident to the war withont fering a protest or askidg au extession Tag single day. Their business for the last eight years bas been larre. and Bas bees care. fully conducted, put the falling Of im prices and the aggregate failures of theifeustomers in the weet and south forced them to close their From J. Shillington we have Heartk and Home tor January 24,and Harper's Bazar for January 9h. Tus New Canieet.—The quid nuncs do aot | seem to know exactly where to place Hon. EB. B. Wasbburne in the coming administration. | Unt quite recently they had settled it that he | was to be Secretary of the Treasury without doubt, but within the last fortnight it has been announced, in turm, that he would be made Secretary of the lnterior, and, contrariwise, | that be would not accept any position in Gen- ‘ant's Cabinet. Now, it has been Kaown all | siong, to Mr. Washburne’s friends, tat be has never for omemt countenasced the use of bis name im connection with the Tressury S-c- Tetaryship. Ifthe state of his health permitted | Des acceptance of any Cabinet piace, ti would | undoubtedly be the Interior Department; but we have from the first beliewed that he would be assigned to the French mission, a position tor which he bas superior qualifications, and ‘which would be much less wearing in its labors than any Cabinet place. ‘The tact is, Mr. Washburne, who is a bard worker, aud who lets labor wear apon him. bas greatly overtasked a naturally fine consti- tunom. Relaxation from the drudgery of routine business is now imperatively neces- sary for him; and the reliet afforded last year by his trip to Europe gives room for the belief that a more protracted stay abroad would be of | material service to him. Knowing ones here, in whose judgement we | considerable confidence, seem to cousider | re thing that George S. Boutweil, of | Maseachusets, is to be the successor to Mr McCulloch. This, we suppose, is upon ths | theory that Senator Morton, of Indisns, will | Dot accept the position. } It seems to be conceded that General John | M. Schofteld will remain in the War Depart- ment. The Navy Department is contested for by Joseph R. Hawley, of Comnecticut, (Chair- man of the Chicago Convention,) and Jobn A. Griswold, of New York. The fact that New York went Democratic would, under the usual Tulng, displace her for a Cabmet office in a Republican administration; but it is urgsd, in behalt of Griswold, that he made a plucky fight to carry New York, and spent a good deal of money im the cause; and that, moreover, be | knows ail about monitors and iron-clads. | (Bite recently the name of Hanibal Hamlin, of Maine, bas been put forward for the Navy De- partment. This would indicate that he docs Rot expect to get Governor Morrill’s place in | the U.S. Senate. Senator Wade seems to be looked upon as the | comung Secretary of the Interior. For the Post- master Generalship some half dozen have been named, prominent among whom are Colonel Forney, Horace Greeley, John D. Defrees. and James F. Wilson of Iowa. Mr. Wiison has also beem named for the Attorney Generaiship, | Dut we hear tbat the friends of T.C. Darant of Louisiana, are ratber sanguine that he will get the place. Mr Wilson has, however, a pretty sure thing of a seat in the United States Senate if he misses a Cabinet piace. 1: is assumed that it will be difficult to find & proper persen to fill the State Department— H that is, upon the assumption that it requires | sm immense deal of knowledge of finesse and ‘State-crsit on the part of the imeombent. But | the tendency of modern diplomacy is to more | direct and frank modes of dealing than of old; | aud there seems mo good reason why a clear bead and good business capacity should not | Gta map to fill the State Department as well Ss apy other Department. Oddly enough, the only Bames presented for the State Depart. ment thus far are from Massachusetts—Charles Semner, Charles Francis Adams, and J. L. Motley. FE Mr. Sumner, it is understood, does not care for the place, Mr. Adams is not deemed to ve sufficiently sound in politics to be eligible, and therefore, if Massachusetts 1s tohave the place, Mr. Motley seems tobe the man. But that State cannot supply two Cabinet officers, and if Mr. Boutwell is to be Secretary of the Treasury, the Premier of the Cabinet must be sought in some other quarter. It has been suggested that Henry J. Raymond, of the New York Times, ‘would make a good Secretary of State; but Probably the esme cause operating against Mr. Griswold for the Navy Department, i. ¢., that the State went wrong im November, will put Bim out of the list. General Sheridan has proved himself the best “pacificator” we have sent tothe Indisa country. His vigerous winter campaign in tbe haunts of the savages south of the Arkan- sas has served to inspire them with a whole- some dread of our military power at last. The Indians havea great contempt for our sqaads of soldiers scattered at the posts along the lines of the railroads; and not anfrequently the In- cians have made their depredations within fun-shot of these “awkward squads,” who are generally very inferior marksmen. Bat Sher- | idan’s unexpected descent upon them in their | Winter quarters gave them a blow in earnest, such asthe Indian mind is capable of appre- ciatmg. General Caster’s battle with Black Kettle’s bamd bas had a wholesome effect, and although some doubts were expressed as to the hostile character of the Indias who were made to suffer-on that oecasion, there has been Proof enough furnished since to show that they were on the war pathand deserved all the chastisement they.regeived. Tne wiater is the Indian's disastrous season. It is just the time that he never wants to fight, and that is Precisely the reason why we should force him either into campaiga or into submission. The army under Sheridam has proved its compe- tency to deal with tRe Tudians, and perhaps Congress will see in this fact another arga- menf ‘m favor of transferring the Indian Bu- rTeau to the War Department. — As it possible that the book publishers or dealers or any of them are so affected by the tendency of the times {hat they resort tothe tnck of using & single volume of a given set Of works or séries to obtaim a notice thereof in ‘88 many different newspspers as there may be Yolumes im & set, instead of sending &@ complete set to each or apy eneof the journals appareat- ly sofavored!
