Un the whole it was the mo:t creditable performance of this opera ever given in this city. We were much interested in the Performance of the accomplished versatile artist, Madame La Grange, who. ou entering a: Alice, gave the recitative and aria in Italiw, bet as soon as /iertram (Hermanos) made his Appentance she changed to German, the lin- guage be sings, and kept itup in the duet and trio to the end of the act. Although her voice bas been severely affected, she still remains a great artist. Her execution is admirable, and tm or twelve years ago no other living prima donna excelled her. We regret to hear that sbe will not appenr again, as she intends to leave for Europe at once. Of Signor Brignoli we can say, that he pos sesses an unusuel fineorgan, but why he dors not use it to better advantage we connot under- stand. His voice is what may be called a large one: in fact, it has more volume than is pos- sessed by any other tenor; but he does not seem to be aware of the fact, and therefore remains a mediocre singer. He has, however, the great merit of being nearly always in tune, which wa. not the case last night with most of the othes, particularly with Habelmann as /tim- belde and Miss McCalloch as [saletia. The Jauer seemed to have altogether too heavy a role. The aria “Grace” with harp accompani- ment lacked execution and force, With addi- oral schooling Miss McCulloch may become 8 good. pleasing singer, but she will apparently never baye power fora part so trying as /sa- bella, Hermaans as Keriram was, as usual, the main attraction, yet bis voice Was not as clear as on thenight before; he was also a little out oftune occasionally. His conception ot Ber- tram appears to us a little too diabolic; but we must say, that m cbaracters of this kind he always shows the fine actor, His Wephistophiles, however, excels his Bertram by far. ‘The Chorus is very good, with the exception ot some lack of bass. The Orchestra, under the indomitable Max, isexcellent. LaGrange, (with the exception noted,) Herrmanas, and Hotelman, sang in German, Briguoli and McCulloch in Italian. The Ballet performance, executed by M'lle Waesmael, without the assistance of a Corps de Ballet, was by nomeans ellective, and might as well have been omitted. Tax Late Mak, Stevens._The House has been engaged since noon in listening to the eulogies upon the late Mr. Stevens, of Penn- sylvania. SENATE —Mr. Sherman desired to correct the Teport of yesterday's proceedings relative to the Fesolation of My. McOreery presented resolutions propos- ing amendments to the Constitution of the United States, which, he said, were prepared by Hon. S.S. Dickens, of Louisville, who bad for fifty years been an ornament to the bench and bar, and these amendments were the result of long and careful study on sabject. Mr. Sherman, from ine Committee on Fi- Dance, reported the House bill extending the time for fixing the stamps on tobacco, Mr. Rice introduced biils to remove Political disabilities from certain citizens of Arkausas and Kentucky; which were referred to Judi- cisry Committee. Mi wyer called up Mouse bill tor the re- mov: of political disabilities from sundry cit- ‘zens of South Carolina; which was ameuded by the addition of other names. Mr, Sumner called up <he joint resolution tendering the thanks and best wishes of the People of the United States to Spain. Mr. Bayard declared in tavor of non-inter- vention. All we knew about affairs in Spain was that there was a war going on there, and we had notbing to do with recommending abolition to them. It wonld certainly be im- pertinent in us to recommend to Mr. G iadstone io disestablish the Irish Church, Mr. Thayer moved an amendment, so as to recommend to Spain the establishment of ® re- publican form of government, Mr. Fessenden said this mater had been con- sidered by the Committee on Foreign Re'ations, and they Were unanimous that it would be an impertinent interference for us to recommend to the people of Spain what kind of a Govern- ment they should frame. That was a matter for them alone. Mr, Sumner individually thoughtthat ancient monarchy would err if it did not now establish &@ republican form of government, but he did not think it was good taste ror Congress to express any opmion as to that. ir. Thayer then withdrew his amendment, and the morning hour expiring, the resolution ‘went over. The unfinished business, being the resolution of censure on the President for the la: used in bis message in reference to the payment of the public debt, was taken up. Mr. Dixon took’ the floor and proceeded to defend the Presideat on the ground that the construction which had been placed on his language was not the correct one. Hovse or Kereesentatives.—Atter the Tending of the journal, Mr. Dickey (Pa.) arose and said ‘Mr. Speaker: The painful duty has de- volved upon me of announcing to the House the death of my predecessor, Hon. Thaddeus Stevens. of Pennsylvania. This distingaished statesman was not merely my predecessor in this body, but in my childhood my father taught me to admire aud love him, who was the instructor and guide of my youth, and the friend of my mitore years. If an intimacy with wise and noble men be one of the greatest blessings that can crown a maa, then im no part of my career have I been so fortunate as in my association with Thaddeus Stevens.
