Horace Greeley Was invited to speak at Wheeling on the sub- Ject of slavery, but after getting there h» slunk away, and made a speech about books. He was @ trimmer, & trickster, and had always been one. Last evening @ meeting of the members of congregation of the New York avenue burch was held in the lecture room of the churea for the parpose of determining to whom toextend a call to fill the position of pastor, made vacant by the death of the lamented Dr Gurley. Rev. John Chester, of Uspitol Hill, having been selected by the Session of the Church as Moderator, acted in that capacity, nd opened the meeting with devotional ex. ercises. Mr. Shields was chosen S-cretary. Before proceedii with the regular business, Dr. Parker offered a resolution thanking Rv Dr Schenk, of Philadelphia, for the ser- mon delivered on Sunday last on the lif+ and death of their iats pastor, and requesting & copy for publication, which was unanimous. ly adopted. Mr. Walker rend a recolution adopted by the officers of the church, submitting the name of Rev. Dr. Beedle, of Philadelphia, for the action of the congregation: at the same time express- ing their desire that the name ot Rey Mr. Mitchel of Harrisburg, be not withdrawn Mr. A. R. Shepherd inquired if the vote on the Tesolution was unanimous, to which Mr. Walker replied that he thoughtit was. Mr. Deeble remarked that he voted against the reso- lution, and could name three others who voted with bim. Mr. Shepherd called for the reading Of the minutes of the sessions meeting on Fri- day evening last. Judge Uasey remarked taat the congregation, to say the least, was sur- prised at this action, and he would move that the meeting adjourn. Mr. Sh»pherd suggested that a committee be appointed to act with the sessions in making & selection of a paster. In this matter they should act wisely and no! harsbly, and the committee could report at a meeting A month hence. After some further disenssion, Mr. Shephera moved that the meeting declare it inexpedient to proceed to call a pastor; which was adopted. as alsoa motion to appoint a committee to act with the officers of the charch in recommend we suitable candidates, Judge Casey did not agree that the meeting should adjourn for one month, as there seemed to be a division of sentiment now, and there shonid be a tree interchange of views oa the subject. The wants of this church, occupying not only & metropolitan bat cosmopolitan” po- sition, are peculiar, and im tmis matter they should make no mistake. These people are blown together, as it were, by the four winds, baving their peculiar views, and a great deal would depend on the pastor. Hop. Jasper E. Brady favored an adjourn- ment for one month, belie ving that tue interests of the church wonld not suffer while the pulpit 4s filled by Rey. Mr. Pratt, to whom he paid a high compliment. Mr. Shepherd moved that when the meeting Adjourns it be to meet at the call of the com- mittee: carried The committee was selected by the congrega- tion ss fellows: Professor Henry, and Messrs Ballxutyne, Bailey, Kennedy, Parker, Fitch, Casey Randolph. and Brady. Mr. Ballantyne offered a resolution providing that the congregation offer a salary of $5,000) per cnnum in cash. He advocated the resolution ina fe remarks, stating that the excess could be easily raised by an increase of pew rent, which was now below that of other churcurs, and that they could net expect to get the ser- Vices of a first class mimister without a good salary. Mr. Tustin regretted the introduction of (he resolution, and was not in favor of paying such a salary, believing the congregation to b> unable to raise it, He did not want a minister on & money basis: they should preach for soul-; and he did not think it right to ask poor, mis- erable clerks to pay such a salary. Mr. Kennedy said the subject was irrelevan fothe call, and moved to lay itou the table: ost. Mr. Shepherd said that it was very proper to tell & pastor what they intended to pay him He did not believe in living on souls, and som= soals would make very poor living. It wes matter of impossibility for a pastor to live ou such salaries as were paid in this city, and it Was unjust to keep them on such salaries. Hon. Jasper E. Brady said that he was one of those unfortunate individuals knowa as Government clerks, and there were many others in the church. He urged that the ex- pensrs be not increased, for be, with oters, might be compelied to go to a cheaper church.
