Whether the | Emperor dors not lose more than he gains 0¥ the course of Bis irstruments in this matter | may perhaps be questioned; but it is clear that the prominence gtven t» the subject now csunot bat serve to recall incidents of the pas! Wich | must be unpleasant to: His Majesty. aad to revive an interest in the tragic ts of M. Baudin, the alleged object of the demonstra. tions, who, it will be remembered, was @ deputy of the Freneh National Assem. | Diy whieb, in 151, succeded in ontlawing the President. Upom the call of that body for | all good citizens to take up arms in deteues of | the Constitution, he went bravely to the var- Ficades and encouraged ‘he workingmen to Nght. One of them retorted jeeringly that they Were not going to risk their lives to save for | him bis twenty-five francs (official pay) a day. Whereupon, with inst strange enthusiastic | courage so peculiar to BIS Tace. he replied that | be would “show them how a man could die | for twenty-five francs & day,” and, mounting the barricade, fired upon the advancing troops, and instantly fell dead, riddled by a return volley. Considering the length of time Bandin has slept vanoticed in his grave, and considerinc, also, the virulent manner in which the Gov- ernment is prosecuting those who affect to horor bis memory, it is pretty safe to conclude that the offensive manifestations are regarded by the Government as a sign of hostilicy to the ‘impire rather than of reverence for their pre- tended subject, and that its harsh measures are | based upon this interpretation. If this view is correct, we may look for stirring news from France betore long, unless a more conciliatory policy 1s inaugurated. Everything which serves in any degree to condense or preserve articles of food tends to cheapen the cost of living, and conduces, as a consequence, to the comfort and prosperity of the Iaboring classes. We notice with great plessare, therefore, the announcement that a gentleman of Gloucester, Mass., has recently invented an article which, it is claimed, pos- sesses the peculiar property of keeping meat, poultry, fish, etc., in a perfectly natural and ‘fresh state for any length of time. The article or subsiauce in question is said to be similar to | salt, in being soluble in water, bat is almost entirely devoid of taste or smell. It is stated, furthermore. that it is not very expensive, ani contains nothing deleterious. ‘The editor of the Gloucester paper has exam- ined specimens of pergie, cod, and haddock which bad been im the mew preparation ten, seven, and four weeks, respe-tively, and he says the flesh wasas firm, fresh, and good in every respect as if just caught from the water. In addition to this testimony, i a that | scientific men who have examined tue a: express surprise that have not been sconer dise If these statements be true, and we see no reason to doubt them the invention in ques. tion is destined to work a revolution in provision business. so far, at least, as the sential elements of meat, poultry, game, aud fish are concerned. They can be carried to every part of the world, in a tresh state, with- out the use of salt or ice, which are large items in the expense of preserving provisions, and which add also very considerably to the cost of their transportation. Particularly will it be useful to all sea-going people; but in the fact that the new invention will make available to | Temote quarters the treasures of the sen, the cattle on the rich and distant prairies of the southweet, and the came of our boundless for- ests, its chief value will ite,—for, in the pro- | portion that these things are accomplished will the cost of living in all parts of the coventry be Teduced. Our city cotemporaries are very justly com- plaining of the shabby manzer iu which the caty press were treated at the White House ia | the matter of grving out copies of the Presi- dent’s Message. As early as Tuesday night copies were given to the agent of the Associ- ated Prees to be mailed for the use of the jour- als throughout the country connected with that Association, and copies were also given, through some favoritism, to the representa. tives of Brick Pomeroy’s paper, and the Cai- cago Times, another “red-hot” party paper. ‘Yet the papers of this city were not able to get | copies wutil 11s. m. yesterday, and then only after the most tedions circumlocation had been gone through at the White House in the way of procuring large numbers of copies and en- veloping them to be sent to Tom, Dick and Harry before the Washingten prees was sup- plied. The result of this brilliant piece of Bunsbyism was that the message had bea published three hours in New York and Oni- cago before the Washington papers were able to get a line of it, By employing an extra | force of printers, and by great exertions, we | were able to put it on the street the momen: | the reading was commenced at the Capito! Dut it certainly was a trial to the temper to be Put to ail this inconvenience and expense so unnecessarily. And why the Washington ps- pers, who have never yet broken faith by the Premature publication of official documents, sbould be thus discriminated against, is the strangest part of the whole clumsin: BRICKLAY ERS’ ConVESTION.—The delegates totbe National Bricklayers Union will mee im this city on the 11th of January next, to de- Iiberate upon questions of interest to the entire trade im the United States’ There are now about 10,000 bricklayers organized toto unions ‘throughont the country, and it is believed that the approaching Convention will adopt meas. ures that will Isrg-ly increase the numbers And influence of these locas unions, and, if pos- sible, do away with strikes, Exch Union is entitled to three delegates, but one may cast | three votes whenever the remaining two are Sbsent. In view of the lace strike at New York, and the conspiracy trials growing out of 4, this Convention will be an important one. Tus Orgea —The commaation which Mr. Maretzek proposes to bring before the Wash- ington public at tae National Theater next ‘Week, comprises a chorus of sixty, a grand or- ebe®tra, and such experienced artists as Brig- nolt, Habelman. Hermanns, Beott:, La Grange, Agatha Siates. Mss McCulloch, Madame Kot. ter, Cellini, Wilhelm Formes, Oriandini, and Antonucci, The box shee: tor the six nights opemed at Metzervtt’s thie morning, and the este of tickets is progressing rapidly, ‘Tne | cperas to be cree are “Traviata,” «Paugt,’ ober! * «The Sicilian Vespers,” | has been taken up at Rome, w! The correspondent of the New York Times, | tolegraphing from ‘bis city ia regard to the publication in some of the aewspapers of tain ofBcial Sone before they had been pre- ake disgracetul bbie over “The result of cotul aqaabble o} tbe The revul of i Je of reports, with ite thefts and violatiogs Cf solemn promises, rit “old practice ot een the Message and Reports | to Congress in writing.” That some such rule will come to be adopted, if the abure compiained of is continued much | longer, we Daye little dombi: but it cannot be | enforced with justice or propriety against the i, newspapers. So far as we know, published here bas ever broken faith with the President or the head of a De- partment or Burean who tarnished it with a copy of any report or paper on a promise that it should not be made public betore a given time. ‘The prnctice of farnisbing sdvance copies to the press isa good one, because, in the first place, 11s am sccowmodaiion and a saving to newspaper publishers, and in the second, it in- sores the early publication of impertant docu- ments in @ proper and correct form. But these advantages are both lost when corres- pondents or publishers violate an agreements expressed oF impliec, and print reports in ad- Youce for the purpose of leading cotemporaries who are old-fashioned enough to draw a dis- | tucuion between bad faith and legitimate en- terprise. We hope, therefore, if the rule sug- gested is tobe adopted, that just discrimina tion will be observed in its enforcement, Only | the guilty sheuld be punished, Comic Orena.—“Barbe Bieu” was performed by the Worrell Sisters at the National Theater Jast evening, to a crowded house. President Johrson and bis grand children occupied a private box. On his entrance the orchestra | played “Hail to the Ohief;” whereupon he appeared at the front of the box and bowed his acknowledgments, being greeted with applause. Of course almost any extravagance within the bounds of propriety may be produced in the acting of such broad burlesques as these English versions of Offenbach’s sparkling comic operas, but the exwberance of the per- formers should always be modified by grace of gestures and motion. In this particular the French are au fait. The acting last night needed little of this indeseribable finish, of which we have tried to convey an idea, but seemed, ney- | ertheless, to be very acceptable to the audience, The music of “Barbe Bleu” is very pleasing. | and was given with spirit, The piece will be Tepeated this evening. Caearest YuT!—The President, in his mes- sage to Congress, thus figures on the public debt: “The general impression as to the exorbitan- cy of the existing rate of interest nas led to an inquiry in the public mind respecting the con- sideration which the Government bas actually Teceived fot its bonds, and the coaciasion is becoming prevalent that the amount which is obtained Was in real money three or four hun dred per cen’. less than the obligations which it issued in return.” The blosted bond-holders certainly have an uncommon good thing of it if the Presilent’s figuring is accurate, They get te bonds for nothing, and Government pays them a large premium for taking them! Who woulda't “bloat” arder such propitious circumstances? BF There is arumor in Chicago, said to be well authenticated, that Dr. John’ McMullen, pastor of St. John Roman Gatuolic Chureh in that city, who left there some mouth since to | prosecute an appeal agamst Bishop Duggan, bas so far =ue: controversy ded in bis mission that the ween the Bishop aud his clergy here all parties been summoned to appear concerned hive | Sud be beard before the Supreme Tribunal of the Chure!
