o” ae Aha hem Oe tata a owe neesrg-« | THE CHANGE © Rather unexpectedly Mr. Disraeli, the Eng- lish premier, has thrown up his position prior to the meeting of the new Parliament. From the tenacity with which he has hitherto held to the place it was supposed that he would main- tain bis position until forced @ut by @ vote of want of confidence. Itis believed, however, that the Queen signified to him her wish that he sheuld yield at omee to the popular wish as expressed at the iate elections. In his address he condemns the resolves in favor of the dis- establishment of the Irish Church. He be- lieved the country would not sanction that Measure, but the elections show they do sus- tain it, and therefore the Ministry “feel it due to their own honor and to the policy supported | by them not to continue unnecessarily in office single day, deeming it more consistent with the attitude they hold, the convenience of pub- lic business and the influence of their party, to Tesign at once, instead ot awaiting the meeting ofa Parliament in which they must be in a minority.” He threatens unyielding opposition to the Liberals on the Church question, and naturally he assumes at once the leadership of the opposition in the new Parliament, where he will prove a most formidable opponent; his qualities of mind and temperament qualifying him peculiarly for offensive warfare. The Cable telegrams announce that Mr. Gladstone has been summoned to Windsor to form a new Ministry, This will be no easy task. Itisssnmed that Mr. Bright will form | one of the new Cabinet. A Liberal ministry could hardly be formed without him, but it is known that he will take office unwillingly on Sccount of bis health, which is very mach broken down from hard work. Though many years younger than Mr. Disraeli or Mr. Glad- stone, he is much more worn than either of them. His lungs are weak, and this summer his hair turned a silver white. The position taken by Mr. Bright against war and against capital pupishment, will also make it difficult to “piace him” in the Cabinet in a position | suited to his mark and abilities. He is admira. bly qualified to be Secretary of State tor India, by his knowtedge of the history, resources, and necessities of that country, but in that position ‘Would be obliged toorder and direct war measures and military matters in a manner entirely repugnant to his feelings and prin- ciples. It has Been given out that he would perbaps be made Home Secretary, but in this position he would be called upon to order the ‘The mata: aieadhe eteee eae | execution of condemned criminals, which, as igo ctene och to sur Gnndvenae and | Spemeempromumnoppmaent ot epi pat ~ een genta eb ored aura a cae tion of Chancellor of the Exchequer is one rely, = ae facil ap ting rail. | 2 Which he is well suited, but the work 1s too clipe Sapp! rapping et city | DENYS. HOW RAILROADS CHEAPEN Feop. ‘We clip the following from the New York Times of Tuesday: The industrious poor of our populous cities m mot for want of cheap beef, cood and cheap mutton anda bountiful supply of all kinds of poultry at cheap rates. Yesterday excellent young turkeys were selling in West Wasbingtoa Market for 15 cents to 16 cents per pound. Fat dueks and chickens, as fat as but- ter and as yellow as gold, were offered at 14 cents to 16 cents per pound, without heads. ‘The beet stands are literally crowded with fair beef at 6 cents to lo cents per pound. As good bindquarters ot young bullocks as any fomily can desire were selling for 12 ceats to Ki cents per pound. Fair lambs and common mutton by the carcass was in heavy supply at 6 cents to S cents per pound. Thousands of good, tender sheep, fat enough for the palates of most people, were sold for 7 cen's per pound. As the weather is now so cool.a txmily ean purchase an entire carcass of mutton, hang it am a cool place, and it will supply them with good meat fers month without spoilmg. Hun- dreds of fore-quarters of good beef were on sale at ‘cents perpound. For most families such lean beef is far more profitable than if it were very fa!. A quarter of beef would not become ed im three or four weeks, while hanging im 8 cool cellar or room. Apples and potatoes were pever cheaper. Excellent apples, the best, are worth @4 per barrel; good apples can be bought for @; Potatoes from $2 to $3.50 by the single barrel.’ At Centre Market yesterday, in this city | the articles enumerated in the above list were | selling as follows :—Turkeys, 20125 cents per jucks, $1.50 per pair; chickens, 75 cents common, 12 cents; hind quarters, 14 cents; fore quarters, 12 cents; lambs by the car- 15 cents per pound: mutton by the car- cents per pound; apples by the bar- rel, (imferior,) $4.50; do., (good.) #6; potatoes, good, $1.30 per bushel; do., vest, $16) per bushel. ‘Tue WEEKLY STak, now on our counter for . 7 | Conrteht Art oe Points of the Northwest.
