Ac- cording to this survey, the line of route will pass through Charles ‘county a distance of About fifteen miles. The point at which it is proposed to connect thr road with the Balti- more and Potomac road, in this county, ts, of course, as yet undetermined. The route, as faras ‘the survey has progressed, 1s, we ‘un- derstand, very level. This road can therefore be easily built and at comparitively little cost. ‘We hope to see immediate steps taken for the early prosecution of this imporiant work. Since the above was in type, we learn that the surveying party reached the neighborhood of Brandywine, im this county, ou Tuesday, and are now om their way to Washington. They will cross the Baltimore and Potomac railroad atsome point near Brandywine. and will then pass by Mr. Paul Talbert’s, Mrs. Araminta Brooke's, the « Woodvsrd,” Gentre- ville, Forrestuille, to Benning’s Bridge, and in- tend stoppicg at 'some point in this ‘county. As he approached hire be ghve the usual salutation, but with out any reply be received a blow from a biudgeon or some other deadly weapoa on bis forehead, which stunned him for an instant when the blow was repeated; but notwithstand- ing the odds against bim he grappled with the villain and called loudly for help, when both fell to the ground. Weakened by joss of blood and the shock of the blows. tue Seraeant was compelled to lose hi= hold. An assissant who came with a lamp was in time to discern the retreating shadow of the villain. Alter the Sergeant's wounds were dressed he was com- paraiively comfortable. but subsequently grew worse and on Wednesday died. The Coroner's searching investigation, assisted by the military authorities at the Point, has failed to discover the perpetrator of the foul deed. The new ar- rangement goes into effect immediately, aud the officers say that business will be adjusted to the new basis within the ensuing week. THE Death Pawaty.—The King of Swe- den has announced that hereafter no capital execution shall take place in his kingdom, and that if the death Penalty be not abolished by Jaw, it sball not be enforced by him. Pollard—James Grant Held to Bail. In our dispatches from Richmond yesterday it wus briefly mentioned that James Grani, who shot H. Rives Pollard, was examined yes- lerday morning. and bailed in $10,000 to aus wer at the February term. The Stace Journal ot last evening gives some details of the exami- nation before be Mayor, and says “Before Mr. Grant had been released on bail, Mr. E. A. Pollard made bis appearance in the court-room and stated to the Mayor that he had understood Mr. Grant would be admitted to bail. He had some witnesses whose testi- mony be thought might have the eilect to cause the Mayor to reverse his decision. He then stated that he expected to be able to prove by two witnesses, who overheard the conyersa- tion, that Mr. Siover,a trend of tae Grant family, had called upon his brother at his house on the night before the pnbiication of the paper, and endeavored to prevail upon him not to publish the article.
