SEPTEMBER 22, 1568, S7 READING MATTER ON BEVERY Pa’ FOR THE ACCOMMODATION OF PERSONS leay- img the city during the summer moyths they con bave We STAR mailed to their address, by ordering the same at the office, for 124 cents Per week, for one week or mors. THE OCTOBER ELECTIONS. The next great State el re those of Pennsylvania, Ob.o, Indiana and Iowa, which | ake place on the 13th of October. claimed for the Republican candidates by a | large majority, but.a strong effort is being made by the Democrats to hold the State, and they are hopeful of carrying it for Seymour and Biair. Pennsylvania, too, is claimed by both parties, and both are exerting themselves to the utmost, for, as usual, the Keystone State { Nebraska | Sihowledge bas her's a week earlier—Octoder 6th. bio ip peste Soci ‘Will bavean important influence in determin. | ‘ug who shail be the next President The Re, publicans’ confidence of success im that Stare | us based upon the resnits of the October elec- tions in 1866 and 1567, the figures of which stood 3s follows 1-66—Kepubhican yote for (iovernor, 3 Democratic vote, 290,096; total vote cast, 597,3 Republican majority, . 1867—Republican vote, 267,746; Yotal vote cast, 534,5 jority, 920. The Kepublicans say if there had been a full ‘Vote cast in 1567 this result might have been re. garded ss. decided political reaction in favor of the Democracy, but that the aggregate vote of thetwo years, when placed side by side, show that nearly 63,000 more votes were polled : Democratic ma- in 1566 than in 1867. The Democratic yote cast | im 1867 Was 22,000 less than the same party cast im 665, and the Republican vote was 40,000 less It these 40,000 Republicans vote in Octo- ber the same as they did in 1566, and the 22,000 Democrats vote the Democratic ticket, there will be a Republican majority of 20,000; but the Democrats claim to have made gains since 1866 which will more than overcome this ma- jority. In Indiana the canvass is being conducted by both parties with great energy, but if the Dem- ocrats carry that State in October it must be by Sreaction in their favor as the State has been consistently Republican since I-61. The fol- lowing were the majerities:—1561, for Lincoln, majority 5.813: 1864, For Governor Morton, ma- jority 20,583; 1564, for Lincoln, majority 29,159; 1866, for Secretary of State, Fowler, majority 14,202. There was no election in 1867. Steet Unixats.—The New York Board of Health, with = proper regard for the com- fort of the commanity, are about to supply that city witha much needed accomodation. They have ordered the construction of a public urinal in Astor Place, which will, no doubt, be followed by the erection of others in the most crowded locations of the city.as this is one of the institutions whieh do not have to await the re- sults of any experiments to prove their useful- ness. They are no less necessary in this “City of magnificent distances,” than in the great commercials metroplis, and shouid be intro- duced m all the large cities in this country, Even the spiritless cities ot Italy have bad the | common sense to provide this convenience. Paris is abundantly supplied not only with | these, but with regular water closets. They are one of the very first comforts which a | stranger realizes in the great capital. Calinets pour ies dames are located along the boulevards and in the most frequented streets and sections of Paris, to which ladies are privately admitted upon payment of s few sous. They are in charge of women, under police surveillance, as are also those pour les homm-s. Why cannot we, while we are about it, have something of the samé sort? The privilege of erecting them might be awarded toa company, who would realize a lucrative return for the outlay, and make money enough to pay the city a hand- some per centage on their income, as is done in Paris. Tae National Lansom Cororess.—The Lbence via Capitol ‘Hill to de National Labor Congress assembled in New | mass meeting in the Sixth York yesterday. Delegates were present from Marylan+, Illinois, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Obio, Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. Also, delegates from the Na- tional Typographical and National Osrpen- ters’, Jomers’, Bricklayers’, Machinists’, and Biacksmitbs’ Unions; aud from the Working- men’s Associations of New York city. Mr. J. ©. ©. Whaley, of tais city, president of the National Labor Umon, was called to the chair ‘The call of the meeting was read by the secre- tary. It sets forth that the object of the organ- ilation isto institate reformsand to carry out those already instituted in the interests of the working classes, and by establishing reciprocal relations between their differen: organizations unite with them in a common effort to protece themselves and keep back the encroachments of centralized wealth upon the rights of labor, and to secure legislation that will improve their condition amd advance them in the scale of prosperity amd intelligence. Among those present were Susan B. Anthony, Mrs. Putnam, and Mrs. M. H. McDonald, of the Woman's Suffrage and Labor- Association of Mount Vernon, New York. ‘Tux Taigwsiat Eriscorat Conveytion.— The Triennial General Conuention of the Pro- testamt Episcopal Church in the United Sues ‘will meet im New York on the 7th of October. All of the States will be represented for the first ume since 1559, and the convention will com- prise a larger pumber of bishops and divines | _ Rebel! than any former council. Much impertant PP gy mete ousipess will come before the convention. It is expected that six or seven new dioceses and missionary jurisdictions will be erected, and several bishops elected, crated. The subject of readjusting the canons and many other important questions will be discussed. The Turkish agents who are new in Virgmia looking for a home in which to settle a colony of five or erx hundred Armenian families, will be in Washington in a few days to make inquiries aboot the Government lands, and will also examine the lands of Maryland and | Delaware. ee Bowns Issump.—The Secretary of the Trea- sury yesterday issued $1,120,000 worth of Bonds to the Central Pacific Railroad Compa- by, forthe thirty-five miles of road completed extending from the 255tm to the Quith mile post east from Sacramento. <i rensipenpi aoe, Tas Mumeirat Deav-Locx.—From our report of proceedings in the Board of Alder- men last eventing, it will be seen that there 1s some hope of a speedy termination of the dead. lock sm uaa Board.
