The natural supply of coal oi has rendered its manufactare from coal, &c., needless, but leaves the refining machinery still at work, and multiplies the stills and vats. The quantities of crude oil produced by nature are astonishing. Prot. Lesley, of the University of Penasylva- nia, says that the Empire Spring sent up its oul toa reservoir three hundred feet above the level of its mouth. The Phillip: well yielded at first three thousand barrels of oil daily, while many others around it were yielding trom fifty to five hundred barrels each per day. ‘The Excelsior well flowed five hundred barrels per day for several months. The wells on Oil Creek alone, at their best, produced at the rate of over four thousand barrels daily, or more than one anda half million barrels per annum. In estimating the magnitude ot the supply it is ‘Well to take into consideration the fact that the entire production of the whale fishery of thi world, in one of its most prolific years, was Rot quite four hundred and thirty thousand barrels of sperm and whale oil together. ‘The forse with which new borings otten per- mit the deep set reservoirs of oil and gas to evacuate themselves, would seem itself to in- dicate the physical impossibility of its contin- mance, and experience bas shown that all the older wells slowly but surely diminish their supply. A writer im describing the old Free- dom spring in Cattaraugus county, New York, says that aa well was dug fourteen feet deep; | within eighteen feet of it, which afforded at | first s large supply of oil, but soon the old and | the new springs died away together. This is 3 the case in other localities; none of the ol’ salt wells of the Sandy, the Kanawha, the Monon- gaheia, Conemaugh, Alleghany, Beaver, and | Muskingum valleys have been retaaned in fall working conditien except by being deepened from time to time. The boring being carried further down every few years, new supplies | of brine and oil and gas have been the conse. quence. The uncertainty of the supply is, however, better illustrated in the history of the famous Uil City, with which our readers are tomiliar, some of them, no doubt, to their cost, The fiercest spouting wells of a few years ago have become comparatively quiet, and so has the blowing of their owners. When a com- parison with other regions of the world is instituted the same conclusion is arrived at. ‘The original five hundred springs on the lrrae waddy in India now yield less than 100,0 gallons perannum. Cases of sudden exhaus- tion sometimes occur where wells beginning to blow off gas, become entirely unproductive in aday or two,and it is asserted that in nearly every case of conflagation, the burning well, 8s if internally injured, has ceased its yield of | oil. On the other band, old wells exhausted } and abandoned have sometimes been seemingly refreshed by rest, and again become profitable. | ‘This recuperative pewer, howev: is, we are inclined to think, a poor dependance, and no, ‘worth so much as the probability of new wells being discovered to replace the old. Experi. ence teaches that the resources of nature are inexhaustibie, and we have no doubt petroleam or some equivalent for it will be forthcoming solong as mar requires afire to warm him and oil or gas to give him light. Tux Maixe Exection.—The returns from Maine are not yet full enough to show what the Republican majority is in that State, but they indicate large Republican gains since last year, when their majofity was 11,342. Still they will not reach the figures of 1366, when their ma- jority in the State was 27,600. The yote yester- day was very large, showing that both parties Worked hard. and both now claim to be satis- fied with the result. The Republicans are content with their heavy gains ever last year, cisim that they have done all that they expected, and promise to do even better in No- vember; while the Democrats think they nave | reason to boast of the falling off in the Repub- liean vote since 1°66, they ignoring the election year, which they argue wes a contest al issues.
