He did not see the retiring Water Registrar, Mr. Coyle, when be assumed the daties of that office, but had met him and asked him for the ersh book, and bad been informed that the accounts would be made out and given him. Mr. Brown said the Water Registrar should make out a report stating in what condition he found the Water Registrar’s offlee when he entered it. Wuanr IMPROVEMENTS —Improvements are about being made at the Potomac Ferry whart, in order the better to Accommodate travel and to admit of the easy, sate entrance and depar- ture of the new ferry steamers City of Wash- ington and City of Alexandria. The slips, hitherto too small for the new steamers, wili be ent so as to fit their dimensions, and other | ables of the wharf partially decayed, will repaired as good as new. Brown's whart, heretofore so much in need of repairs, is being thorougnly overhauled and relaid with new timbers in many places, In a tew days it will be so fixed up as to com- pare, in point of convenience and safety, with any wharf along front.” At Galt’s (Seventh street) wharf several al- terations and improvements haye recently taken place. In addition to the erection of first class st ‘sawing and chopping ma- chinery, a spacious lumber reception house has been erected, and now there are ample ‘accom modations for the conduct of the business in which the Messrs. Galt are so extensively engaged. ——— TuE ConpiTion oF MR. SoreR.—Mr. Wm E. Soper, the gentleman whose serious injury from & fail from and being run over by a street car on 7th street, South Washington, lust Tues- day atternoon has already been noticed in the Stak, was still living at noon to-day, though but little hopes of bis recovery are entertained by his physicians, Drs. Croggon and Elliott. His internal injuries are very great, but strange to say no bones are broken. Yesterday, Mr Soper's distressed wife reached home, and, to- gether with other relatives and friends, is un- remitting in her attentions to the unfortunate victim of the accident. August uth, 1868,—Editor Star: I noticed in the columns of your paper of the 2ist inst. a communication signed by one 4.H. Crane, @ party with whom TI have no arc: Mules it be in ihe history of the Meaning always to he gon- jt myself, it naturally inculcates a desire to see others the same. If he te the party alluded sion to the principles he so toudly advoeates is of so recentadate that simply their advocacy would seem more Lecominy in Acm than bis violent attack on parties whose consistent course requires no defence and defies the severest criticism. He seems to make free use of My Hame in Connection with the Republican meeting of the First Ward held on the 13th inst. where he states “1f Messrs. Slowen & Qo, choose to get down on their knees to Mr. Larman, and at his dictation denounce me this week for giving utterance to sentiments which they applauded last week it is their affair not mine.’ Willing to believe in his statement that he did not wish to place himself before the public as a malicious falsifier I will credit him with the loss of memory, and state, for his benefit, that I was not at the meeting allu to. This state- mentcan be verified by referring to the pro- ceedings ef that meeting as published in your issue of the 13th inst. As to his question why Mr. Larman does not do thus and so [can only state that I think A< is better qualified to ex- tend a sympathy to one who believes it a ne- cessity to errmingly change bis views than I am, de having had experience in that line, which J never have. I believe I am too well known, both among my constituents and the communi- ty at large, for them to believe that Mr. Lar- man. as an individual, or that any organization could dictate to me or urge me to measures not ith my judgment and princi- ‘tend eavors exerted for a harmo- by needed for the public good are fully appre. ciated by those who know me, and with the above refutation I submit my action to their judgment. ACCIDENT ON A STREET Can.—Last mght. about mine o'clock, as car No.l was turning into Bridge street, after passing the bridge, it was thrown off the track, and the falling of the car caused one of the coal oil lamps to upset, and the oil as it wasted immediately took fire, There were only three or four persons in the car at the time, one of whom, a lady, ran out of the car, and her shawl was noticed by a gentleman on the sidewalk to be on fire. He immediately ran to her assistance, and extin- guished the flame before any further damage was done. The car was not injured, as the burning lamp was thrown out on the street in quick order.
