Among the laboring classes of all kinds the action ef the bricklayers is generally | accepted as the test case. In this view ot the | situation the strikers are not only supported | 1 by the sympathies of all the other crafts, but | also receive liberal and most substantial aid, in the shspe of cash contributions trom the various trade organizations throughoet the , country. The leaders of the movement boast | that to-daythe strikers are in a stronger financial | position than they were on the first day of the strike. The eight-hour men bave one great ad- vantage—they are united, and the bosses are | not. Already, where the exigencics of the oc- casion have compelled the continuance of the bricklaying, the employers have bean forced twaccede to tie demand of the strikers, and pay them the old ten hours’ wages for their eight hours’ work. This is one point gained at least by the workme: ‘Tax Ect nm Sunday, near midnight (by our time,) or 6% o'clock Monday morning, im Basten Airica, ocenrred = total eclipse of the sum. Astronomers from all parts of the ‘world went there to see it. Almost every civil- ized government organized expeditions and seiestific agents to witness this remarkable event. The Russian Government sent out a large force of savans. The English Royal So- ciety and Astronomical Society also sent ob- servers: the Pope sent Father Seccui, (who-e Iabors m the cause of scientific improvement are known throughout the world,) ard the Emperor Napoleon sent oat Monsieur Jansen. It is the most remarkable solar eclipse that bas taken piace within those periods of the World’s history of which we have any record, and no similar event (that is of such import. ance and proportions) will occur for bugdreds of years in the future. DUVORCE STATISTICS.—We noticed lately at some jength the remarkable article on «Di- vorce™ by Dr. Woolsey, president of Yale Col- lege, in the last number of the New Englander, im which he gives statistics and arguments to show that Connecticut occupies a «bad emi. nence among the States” in the number of its divorces; bat, after remarking in a feot-note that the State of Indiana has no statistics of diyoree, he gives an estimate of the annual number there at 2,000, and adds: “If it be so, the ratio to the number of inhabitants sur- pases that of Conncctieut.” It appears now | from recent esumates that the number of di- Yorces obtained annually in Indiana does not fall much short of 5,000. Indiana then mast be Promoted to a “badder” eminence than Uonnec- cut in the matter of loose divorce legislation. Live lysvBance.—Probably the nearest step yet made towards pulting the life insurance business on the practical footing of the bes: in- Yestment to be made for money, and cn terms easily understood by the imsurer, is that acbieved in the formation of the National Lite Insurance Company, chartered by special act of Congress. The names connected with it show a very remarkable combination of the solid men of the country, and the fact that Jay Cooke and Henry D.Cooke. who have uni- tormly declined to go into any merely specu- | istive company business, have entered upon this enterprise with a large portion of their fortune, is well calculated to give the country confidence in its operations. But, in fact, every State is represented in the company by its lead- ing bankers and sbrewdest and most carefal business men. The directors alone represent a Property interest of not less than $20,(4K),000, and the list of their names.shots some of the best business talent of the country. Elsewhere will be found the advertisement of the company giving some of the new fin. tures of their mode of insurance, and which are of anature to meet the views of all per- sons, whether insurmg as & provision for their families in cave of support being cnt off by Geath, or simply as the very best investment that can be made for :omey. The fact that some of our wealthiest men are insuring purely As 8 money-making operation sRows that it is held as a first-class investment by shrewd and close calculators. In fact, in England life insurance in some shape is the favorite form of investment, purely as safe and sound mode of realizing large profits on a smallsum psid yearly for a limited mumber of yeurs. It is rapidly coming to be looked upon in the same Aight in this country. Sars ‘The statement is made in the Paris Mondr, and confirmed from other sources, that invita- tions to sttend the General Counell of the Catholic Chureb, appointed to he held at Rome, December *, 1869, will be extended to all schismsties!, But not to heretical Bishops. This will include the Bishops of the Greek and Armenisn Communions, bat not those of theChureb of England. The ground of the distinction would seem to be that schis- matics only differ from the Church of Kome in matters of @xtermal discipline, while bereiics reject essential doctrines of faith. Fr J.
