THE COLORED VOTE OF THE SOUTH. One of the most significant features of the Political canvass now going on in the South | ts the fact that the Democratic party is entering into an animated and, apparently, not altogther unsuccessful competition with the Republicans ior the vote of the colored people. In Georgia the Democrats put forward the ciaim that they will gei, at Teast, 40,000 of the 96,000 negro votes of that State. In Georgia the Democrats, headed by Howell Cobb, have formed a sort of Leagues the members of which pledge themselves not to give work to any negroes who cinnot show that they are members of some colored Demo- cratic club. It is stated that there are fourteen colored Democratic clubs in S.vannah, Ga, and that “numerous iccessious” are received at very mce.ing. The badges of these club- are exhibited by colored men seeking Iabor as proof that they intend voting the Democratic ticket. The Republicans aver that the colored mea who join these clubs, do so under coercion to procure employment, and that they will “play possam” when the election come, and vote the Republican ticket. This may er may bot be, but the fact remains that colored clubs are being organized, and that the Demo- erats are counting confidently upon getiing their votes. In Alabama the Democrats s: >m, also, to be cultivating the negro vote with as duity. A mcei'ng of colored people was held | mm Mobile on Thursday night to organize Democratic club. A Seymour and Bla'rrati- fication meeting, “composed almot sively of negroes,” was held, the Alab:ma pa- pers say, at Demopolis last week, and ad- | dressed by four white, and six black speakers— Jim Westbrook,Jack Lee, Reuben Ryon, Sindy Cameron, Wm. Roberts and Jule Armstrong. ~ Old Uncle Sandy Cameron, irom Hale,” we are told by the same papers, “ was scathing in his denunciation of the carpet-baggers,” &c., &c. “Joseph E. Williams, a Tennessee col- ored orator, is stumping Alabama for the De- mocracy,” is anotber item we find in the Southern papers. We learn also from them that “a larce Democratic meeting was held Harlan, Georgia, August 4, was addressed by several noted southern speakers, and a lage number of colored Democrats wore Seymour and Blair badges; that «in Louisiana at Thi- bodeaux, Alexandria, Iberville, aud Algiers, iarge meetings of negroes have been held ad- verse to the Radicals:” that «in North Caro- lina the negroes of Washington, Saulsbury, Hopewell, and Halifax have organized Demo- cratic clubs,” that im Tarboro, Sandy Long aud Exton Harrison, colored magistrates appointed by Gov. Holden, have come ont for Seymoar and Blair; that “the negroes of Hopewell, Mecklenburg county, have formed 1 Demo- cratic club, and large numb=rs have joined it, With officers of their own,” &c., & ‘The .act that the negro vote of the South is being sought by both the parues is ot interes: in many respects; and the que~tion arises how far the demand for his suffrage well effect the condition of the color 4 msn favorably. Doubtless it will raise him im, the social seale somewhat, he will probably be treated with more consideration as a “free and imdependent voter.” «open to convict‘on™ then if certain to go always with one party. As regards the negro vote we oo not suppose that any-hing like coercion on the question of employment will affect it in the mato. In the long run the plant-r will find the laborers quite ss mecessary to him a< he to them. Labor in the South for some tme is likely to be quite as much im demand as vot «, and the experience of the planters since the war has shown thar the supply of labor 1 by Bo means equal to the nevd. On the whole we May conclude that, while considerable numbers of the colored deople may vote the way their employees may wish, it will be trom other in- fluences than that of employment coercion, and that the aggregate colored vote, for some time to come at least, will not be materially stfoctd by such appliances. ——$<—$——_____ PROBAnLE ComrRomise oF THE Baicytay Bus’ STRIKE IN NEw York —The New York Papers of Iasi evening repor: the procerdings of a meeting of the master masous in that city yesterday sfiernoon, at which Mr. Conover stated that a Mr. Smith. the repre-entative of one of the Bricklayers’ Umionsy called upon him and esked for the appointmeat of a com- mittee on behalf of the master masons, to meet a similar committze of the biicklayers and »:- range the terms of a compromise. He told Mr. ‘Smith that if the bricklsyers would appoin: a committee, 8 commitice would be appornted to (meet them and hear what they bad to offer. The subject of a conference with the Bric layers’ Committee was then referred to the Ex- ecutive Commutt-s of the Master Masons’ As- sociatuon, with power. This looks favorable for & compromise of the difficulties. During the meetirg of the master masons yesterday, the secretary read the names of sixty-one firms said to bs employing ten-hour men, and it was claimed that there are tive bosses employing ten-hour men 'v oneemploy- ing eight-hour men.
