~ EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. ‘The Alleged Murder of Patrick Herhes. Last evening, at 7 o’cloek, the case of O Hare, @arged with the killing of Patrick Hughes, at Willard’s Hotel, on the 27th ultimo, was Drought ap for afurther hearing before Jus- tee Smith at police ae aecused him of going to Mr. McCabe and try- ing to have him discharged. The prisoner came to his house on the night of the 26th Jane, and asked foratoom. Was given room No.9. Witness showed prisoner as far as the foot of the steps leading to room No. 9. soner went up, but Witness could not eay positively whether the prisuner went into the room or not. Does not now if prisoner came out again that night, but thought be could not have done so withont the knowledge of the watchman on duty. he frout door, the only one out ot which the pris- oner could have gone, was not locked till about eleven o’clock that night. The Justice reserved his decision. i Tae Fick DerartTMent.—in our notice of Mr. Ellwood, the new chief engineer, taking eharge of the fire department yesteraay, we stated thathe placed Tom Bowie (colored) in charge of No. 2's house. We deem it proper to state that he had previously placed the prem- ises in charge of Mr. Martin Cronin, of tus Fourth Ward, who, it is understooa, will be the engineer of No. 2; and Bowie was called in to see to the horses, when Tom Paris, of the First Ward. and not connected with the com- pany, attacked Bowie, causing the disturbance w was soon quelled by the police and some of the members of the company. There have been no further resignations ten- dered. but it is believed that some will go im durimg the day. When Chief Engineer Ellwood visited the engine-houses yesterday, the members of No. 3 informed him ‘that they intended to remain until theyreceived their dis- ‘issal, and the mbers of No. 1 stated that they would take a similer course, but the Hook and Radhet members tad Sot definitely deter- mined om any action. K. Brown. Esq., in the chair; D. M. Kelsey, Seeretary. The reports of the several comm: tees were received. The report from the work- sbops showed a decline in the manufacture of paper boxes and an increase im wire baskets and frames. A donstion of $45.45 from John ‘Hitz, Exq., was received. The report from the Georgetown Auxiliary Scheol was then read. The school asks for an appropriation of fifty dollars. The Secretary called attention to the fact that the accounts of the association had bot been audited since its formation, and urged the appointment of a committee to atiend to the matter. A motion authorizing the Chair to appoint the same was carried. Mr. Muzzy, So- Deiter of finance, stated that the bill to {ncor- porate the association had not yet both Bouses of Congress, but that a general incorpo- Fation act would speedily be teted upon. After the reading of the minutes of the last meeting, the Chair extended &n invitation to all present, who had not done so, to we forward and sign the constitution. In response, Col. Joseph Travers, Thomas Grady, and James S. Ewbank entered their names on the roll of membership. Reports from committees were then called for, bat the chairmen of many of them betng absent, in attendance upon the Democratic Convention in New York, the call was suspended, and a motion toadjeurn tll next Thursday night was put and carried. Near the site of the workshops which Was im the center of the south yard of the penitentiary, a few days 14 skeletons were eabumed, most of them being in a remarkable good state of preservation. It was by some thought that they were the remains of the English troops which were blown up by an explosion in the war of 112, and by others those of convicts, but from the fact that a number of copper buttons with thirteen stars on their face were found near them, it is thought that they were the remains of United States soldiers who died during the ——_ of the existence of the Arsenal as a military post.
