H. Howard, assistant com- missioner ofgthe District of Columba, from which we take the following extracts: «The Tesult of the census taken shows that there has been no over-issue of rations to dependents The total number of adults enitted to rations as dependents is 553: the number of dependent children (who draw half rations) is 106; making & totul of dependent rations 651; which, together th five rations issued to white employes, es a total of 656 rations daily. The board were of opinion that a large number of the freed le now residing In the village, classed as dependents, are able to provide their own suppor'. Some of these are children of de- pendenis, who have become of suitable age t> care for themsel ves since they were sent there; others were sick and have recovered, others are the wives of anently disabled husbands. As a matter of economy, the board respectfully recommend that the asylum ot Freedmen's Village be discontinued as rapidly as practi- cable; first, closing the hospital by removing the sick to Freedmen’s Hospital, Washinzton, D. ©.; secondly, transferring the inmites to femements adjoining Freedmen’s Hoxpital, ‘Washington, 1).
