EVENING STAR. ak Largest Cireulation int Dic, CROSBY S. NOYES... WASHINGTON OITY: THURSDAY... «JULY 9, 1968, @7 BEADING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. UUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE | GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. can have the Stag mailed to their address, by ordering the same at the office, for 12% cents | Per weeir, tor one week or more. } | The nomination of Mr. Seymour for the | Presidency by the Democratic Convention, | (Aunounged first here bys StaRextra,) took | the politicians here a good deal by surprise to- | day. It was deemed among the probabilities | that bis name would tuta up formidably in the course of the day, but it was not expect»d | that the combination would be effected } s® suddenly. The New York poltficisns | Played their cards with great adroitness | and brought forward their bashful and reluc- tantcandidate exactly at the proper moment to win, after the other candidates had batted each other's brains ont. Opinions yaty hare concerming the strength of Mr Seymour ss a candidate. It is certsim, however, that the Bomination fails toeticit any enthusiasm on the part of the Democratic politicians, aud that the leading Republicans of the capital receive it with a positive feeling ot relief. The latter hold tbat Seymour's war record will be fatal tobrm im the East and his financial position = the West. The Democrats aver, however, their platform is todo the business, and that Seymour or anybody else can be run in on it witha rush. The coolness of feeling here in Democratic circles over the nomination is due tothe fact that Seymour has few partisans here, most of the Democratic politicians having taken strong ground for other candidates, more especially for Hancock. The Bisir family have worked to some par- pose in effecting the nomination of Gen. Frank Bisir for the Vice Presidency, after he failed tor the first place on the ticket. This isa bid fer the soldier vote. The Steam Fire Department force, or a por- | trom of it, is resigning because of the election of Mr. Ellwood as Chief Engineer. In the letter cf resignation—given elsewhere—of one of the companies, the firemen resign, “to take effect immediately.” Wedo net know whether the other companies bave resigned in the same | peremptory form. Of course the employes of | the Fire Department bave a right to resign, but | for their own credit they should not do it ina way to put themselves in the attitade of pur- | mddenty vacating their posts. Prob- ably it did not occur to them im this light. We | presume, however, that with the aid of the Government steamers the property of the city ean be protected—unless in the case of a heavy copfiagration—unti} the places of the resiga- ing firemen can be filled. How Mrces it Costs.—The New York Post calls attention to the fact that the adoption of the repudiation platform by t§e Democratic Convention was immediately @llowed by 3 tall im Government bonds of about one per cent. Every holderof the national debt ha. his property reduced im value; losing, in fact, two months’ interest on his money by this one rash vote of three hundred politicians, The | total immediate loss in value was nearly twen- | ty millions of doliars. Nor 1s there any com- | pensatipg advantage to any person whatever; the loss of national eredit benefits no one, but is pure loss to the bondholders, the nation and the world. Pensoxat.—Hon. John Morrissey made his first appearance with the New York delegation im the Democratic Convention yesterday. ~ Thurl w Weed saiied for Europe on Tuee- dig. <= lien Kc Sees anmaes t Gek eress pia North Osrolina, is in town. --** Mr. J. General Chamberiain was yesterday nomi- mated by the Republicans for re-election as Governor of Maine. New Jersey Republicans hold their conven- tion at Trenton to-day. Gen. The new Superin- tendent of Education fs to be a civilian, as sag: gested by Governor Scott, and he, too, wii Telieved as socn as the State is ready to ascump the work of ecucation. Tux Loymsaya LacisLatrre.—The Louis_ iauw Legislature yesterday, after unimportant business, went into joint session, and elected William P. Kellog io the Senate for the long term, ard Jebn S. Harris for the short term. A committee of Democratic members of both Houses presented a communication to (ieneral Buchanan stating that the presiding officers of both Houses had proceeded in violation of the State Constitution, and the orders of the Gen- eral ot the armies, and the General command- img the department, im excluding members en- lied to seats. They appeal in behalf of the people of Louisiana for redress, and ask the commanding officer, by victue of his authority, to place said exciuded members in their seats, Gereral Buchanan replies that while in bis opinion these proceedings are illegal, oppres- sive.and upjust, and koown to be in opposi- tion to the will of the General-in-Chiet; yet he considers the interest, law, and order of the State im this crisis will not be best subs rved by forcible imterference to correct the abuses complained of. He ssys he will forward a copy of this commonication, with his letter, to Gea. Grant. and to the Chairman of the’ Recon- suuction Committee. Arrates 1x Norte CagoLrva.—The pro- ceedings of the General Assembly Monday, ay, and yesterday are of no general im- portance. Canvassing for United States Sena- tor is kept up constantly. The Express of last evening says: onthe present bas been the most exciting f the Convention, and one of the hottest tthe attendance was larger than ever, especially upon the outside of hall, There have been, at umes, nearly five thousand people im the ball, and at least one-fifth of them ladies. The scene was one of the most intense interest, par- ticularly as the yotes wavered from time to time, and from man to man. Mr. Pendleton’s triends were discouraged trom the moment In- diana divided, but it is Cue to this State to say that no division was manitested so long as there wes any hope for Pendleton. At no time did Mr. P. receive a majority vote; though with 156% votes in his favor he came within three of a majority, From that time his vote receded, though through fifteen ballots he led all the candidates. The name of Chase, even with halts vote from California, drew out immense applause apn rt of the audience in the leries. lid the increased vote for (seneral Han- cong ‘The South voted for the soldier States- man with a will and received immense ap- plause for doing so.
