“4 EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation in the District CROSBY 5. NOYES. WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY, -.JUNE 16, 1868, S7 BEADING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. BEE OUTSI! FOR INTERESTING TELB- GBAPHIO AND OTHER MATTER. ‘When wealthy business men like the Mesars. Galt invest their money in handsome improve- ments to the City they deserve the warm com- mendation of all good citizens. It is too mach the habit of business men hereto put their | earnings into stocks, government bonds, &c., which, though a convenient and remunerative | form of investment, does not advance the | growth and improvement of the city one whit. The Galts bave during their éntire business career sbowR proper pmblic spirit in this re- spect. Whem they some years ago erected their Jewelry establishment near the Metropolitan Hotel it was concededly far in ad- vance of @ny thing in this part of the coumtry; and the building itself was 3 first-class improvement to the Avenue. | ‘They made money there as they deserved *o do with honorable dealing and excellent Wares.ard now they imvest it im the erection of A butmess building that as much surpasses their late establishment as that did its prede- cessors. Their new place of business was thrown open to the public last night, and we venture to say that of the throng ot visators, including hundreds who have seen all that the leading cities of Europe and America can show, in the ‘way of jewelry establishments, not qne but conceded the new store of the Messrs. Galt to equal anything to be found in the world. Quiet good taste is the predomsnant characteristic of the place. Gilt and tinsel glitter has been carefully avoided, and the furniture, the or- namentation, aud all the surroundings are of a character of quiet elegance, calculated to please the cultivated eye. The private residences of the Messrs. Galt, ‘We should add, are also alike creditable to their good taste and their disposition to contmbute to the substantial growth and improvement of the city. hs We trust that Congress will not punish the great mass of Government employes in this city, by & retrograde movement “on the 2) per cent bill,” because of the impulsive outbreak ofa few clerks in the House galleries yester- day, who could not restrain their manifesta. tions of joy at the success of a measure in | which they were so greatly interested. If members of Congress will only im imagination piace themselves in the position of these otfenders against the rules, who tor a year past have been pinching and saving, and despite all their economy have found themselves gradually | sinking deeper im debt month after month, and who saw yesterday in the passage of the bill speedy relief from the incubus which oppresses them, they would no doubt treat With leniency a man:festation which was natural, uf improper. Relief from debt for the busband, perhaps a new dress tor the wife, acarrisgetor the baby, and possibly a little trip for the family of two or three weeks to the sea-side or into the country, were blessings in prospective, which, opening on them so sud- denly after the hope deferred which makes the heart sick, were more than poor human nature could bear, and who can blame them if they gave vent to their emotions. They would have been ungrateful if they had not shouted. Se- riously, we hope that no extraneous matter may be allowed to delay favorable action on a bill which is only a measure of tardy justice to S most worthy and hard-worked class of em- ployes, who have seen the pay of all their co- laborers throughout the country increased, while they haye been compelled to goon at the old insufficient rates. aes The Chate movement for the Presidency Went up like a rocket, but seems destined to come down like the stick, long before the time ot the meeting of the Democratic Convention. We notice that the New York World of yesterday comes ont squarely agaist Chase, and implies that itbas been coquetting with him simply by way of pastime sndamusement The Lan- caster Mmérlligencer, Mr. Buchanan's organ until bis death, denounces the project of nominating Chase, and affirms that the competitors will be Pendleton, Hancock, and Hendricks. The Des Moines (lowa) Statesman snys : “The rivals of Judge Uhase need have no fears that the will take up and ran their rejected candidate. it is a matter acme ciple with the Democratic eney. As Mr. bong bas fong been dinthetrt cally opposed to Democrats party: it is no it is not at all possible that they will now, for the Pose of catching Jacobin votes, nominate Not much.” The Dubuque Herald reproduces the above ‘with approving comment, and adds: 2. 2he Democracy are not yet quite arent to pod up wit the cast-off clothes of the Radi- cals The Utica (IN. Y.) Herald says: ‘he movement to make Chief Justice Chase Democratic candidate {ur President has mated. The journals of that party in this State Rave, by a simultaneous demonstration, pyapovnced with more or less emphasis against ‘The Chase men, we see, are keeping up ashow of fromt, and are engineering a great Chase mass meeting in New York: but they evidently feel that the odds are terribly against them. eee Ba TIMoRrE TO VoTE on a RAILROAD (.UBS- Tien.—An election will be held to-morrow in worch the legal yoters of Baltimore will haye submitted to them the ordinance recently passed by the City Council for waiving the lien of the city under the second mortgage (for $300,000) heretofore executed to the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore by the Western Mary- Tard Railroad Company, in pursuance ot the authority vested in the Mayor and City Coun- of Baltimore and the County Commisaten- 3 Washington county, by recent act oftlie fi Assembly of Maryland. Fe RISTORI.—One might as well attempt to criti- cize Dante's Inferno or an essay of Oar- lee. within the limits of a newspaper para- gtapb, as to undertake to compress into the fame space a description of the style of “the greatest living tragedienne,” 8 sketch of her acting in a single play, and am analygie of the” emotions produced on & wonderful histrionic power, Sui | that the email but intellectual @ud last evening at the represe1 jon ‘Sor Te- resa” greatly enjoyed her of a mother condemmed to. nal instincts, whilé doing battle with injustice and wrong in behalf of her child.
