This morning, about 8 o'clock, a lady (named Miss E. Byron) residing witb her brother, at 330 {ith street south, attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the south bank of the canal sto the water, at the foot of 12th street. For- tupately, the transaction was witnessed by Messrs. George Larham, John Reynolds, and Ed. Adams, wto as soon as possible proceeded to the and succeeded, after much resist- snee on her part, in rescuing her from a watery grave. She was immediately placed in a wagon and taken tothe Central Guardhouse, where Dr. Patrick Croghan attended ber and admin- istered such restoratives, both for mind and body, as the exigencies of her case demanded. Sergeant Walker, of the Metropolitan Police, after repeated fruitless applications to different Farties, finally succeeded in obtaining a full <bange of clothing for the unfortunate lady frcm a female resident m the feighborhood of © and 13th streets, with which she was soon made comfortable. At the guardhouse she made @ statement that about twelve months simce she came from England to live with her brother, who is a clerk in one of the Depart- ments. While here her hfe, she says, has been made wretched by the treatment of his wife, who. Miss Byron thinks, wishes to get rid of ber, and regards her asa burden. In conse. ence of such & state of facts, she says that her life is a curse to her, and as she has ne friends to fly to, her only resort was that Crvurcn.—Grand Fi Frost Festival for the benefit of the Parish ot truction. On Friday last she made a iF attempt at suicide from the Long Bridge, but was frustrated in her design. The +ffort of this morning was a determined one, and had it not have been for timely assistance that was rendered, would have proved suc- cessful. Before jumping into the canal, she laid her parasol, bonnet, and cloves on the bank, amd then with uplifted arms sprang headforemost into the water. Miss Byron is about medium stature, with black har and eyes, @ sad, careworn expression, and ap- parently about forty years ot age. From her conversation and manner she is evidently a Woman of refinement, ard the superscription of an envelope, addressed to her from England, in an exceedingly well-written female band, madicates that her social position at her former home bas been by no means an inferior one. Upon her person was found one gold and one steel breastpin, one dollar and ten cents in for. eign (10-cent) postage stamps, a house-rent re cript from H. Koppel, sixty-six cents in frac- Uonal currency, and a few other papers. ——_.—__. THE Case A. H. I told him that it was an enterprise hatched up by my cousin and some poliucians at Washington—that they sent the circulars to all the postmasters, but got inter- fered with by the police, and I represented myself as solicitous for bis safety, and asked if he could be indicted for fraud or getting money uncer false pretenses. Rowley unhesita- tingly answered No’ He said all they could do was to break up the concern. He said the circular did not represent anything particular that they could or would do: that it did not claim to be the Government; tbat it was altogether too general to be crimi- nal. and that it would ve utterly impossible to make outa case. The one thing that coula be e was to makea little stink. Well, I rushed to the printers and ordered 2,000 circulars and one thousand envelopes printed. [From the Pall Mali Gazette.} The present holders of the Confederate loan cling to the desperate hope that they will yet receive their money back, notwithstanding the long delay and sore discouragements which they have encountered. The original subscri- bers, with certain exceptions, and those per- sons whose names are said to have been pri- vately put down tor stock, must long ago have given 7, all such pleasing dreams, and dis- osed of their interest outright. In the early istory of the war comfortable sums were made by judicious sales and transfer. The bondholders of to-day are not supported by poweriul + city articles,” and their prospects are consequently somewhat gloomy. — Mr. W. Morgan. however, writes trem Lon- don on their behalf to an American journal with the view of establishing the theory that the demands of the holders are not prejudiced | by the failure of the Sonth to establish its inde- pendence The bonds stipulate that payment shall be made “six months after the ratifica- tion of the treaty ot peace,” but our New York contemporary points out that this phrase is notexactly €quivalent to the “termination of the war,” And Lat as a matter of fact no treaty Of peace bas yet been ratified, or ever will be ratified. On this ground, therefore, the claim for payment is not made out. There are some, we believe, who maintain that it is the duty of the United States Government to pay off the bonds, But that im- pression does not generally prevail at Vashington. There have been instances known of the conquerer compelling the con- quered to pay the expenses of the war, but wa canuot recall any precedent for requiring the winning side to’ undertake the liabilities of the losing one. Confederate bond-holders. except those who sold out quietly first, were always sanguine mortals, but that after the Southern debt bas been formally repudiated they should still suppose it will ever be paid shows a de- gree of confidence which many foreign Powers would be very gind to ob-erve in their English creditors. In this instance the confidence 1s het appreciated, andt is therefore not likely to meet with the expected reward. sai eed bok Ordered to Select a Religion—A Novel Pro- ceeding. The London Star of May 19, bas the follow- ing: An extriordinary question received a more exiraordinary answer in the House of Uom- mons last mgbt. Mr. Taylor asked the Earl of Mayo if it was a fact that a prisoner in Mount- Joy prison, who declared himself a Unuarian, ‘was ordered by the governor to select his Te- ligion as Angelican, Roman Catholic or Presby- terian, and, on bis refusal, was sentenced to the penal cell, with bread and water diet. From the Earl's reply ‘we gather that the state- ment was substanually true, but that Mr. Tay- lor bad hardly put it with sufficient force. It that the convict in question, one Murphy, on his admission to Mountjoy con- Vict prison. declared that he was of no religion. He was ordered to select one, He refused. He was then put on penal diet for three days, then received for five days into the hospital, and on his leaving the hospital, put on the penal diet again—and then he selected the Ro- man Catholic religion.” “What is most charming is that it required the united zeal, wisdom and discretion of all the high prison officials working in concert to ffect this marvellous conversion. ‘They went and told’ the director, firstly, that Murphy ‘was unprovided with a faith. The director minuted the governor. The governor applied to his superiors for instructions. The chief merit in the conversion is its cheapness: it could not have cost much more than five shil- lings from first to last, But we fear that the plan of ordering 4 man to select his religion is unsound in principle, although it succeeded so well on this occasion. It is impossible to keep every variety of faith on tap; and suppose Murphy bad avowed a preference for the doc- trines of Buddba, how would it haye been possibie for him to go to meeting!” THE CONFLICT BETWEEN THE CIVIL AND MILITARY AUTHORITIES IN Lousiana The members of the Convention of the Board of Registration in New Orleans in consequence of the arrest of Packard on Saturday issued another proclamation ou Sunday, denouncing General Buchanan and endorsing Packard. They were at once put under arrest, but were released yesterday morning in consequence of a telegrum received by General Buchanan from General Grant. General Buchanan told them if Louisiana was not admitted by Congress they should be rearrested and tried by military commission. Later advices state that the New Orleans Re- publicon of to-day will contain a proclamation yy the Convention, asserting its authority to be equal to that of the Commanaing General, and charging that the latter bas transcended his prerogatives in promulgating hits election or. ders. It concludes by notifying all persons whom Gen, Buchanan’s order has declared elected that the State of Louisiana, on having the constitution adopted by the latg convention, requires them to qualify and enter upon their offices as set forth in a former proclamation from this board, and that any orders from any source directing the contrary are illegal and not binding, and the parties s0 attempting to take office will lay selves lable to an action at law by the parties ejected, as well as ‘the risk of certain removal from office. 87 Mrs. Brennan, wife of Thomas Brennan, near Taylortown, m Franklin county, Ohio, went out early Friday morning to milk the cows, as usual.
