THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Cirenlation in the District, | CROSBY 5S. NOYES....... Ww. TON CITY: ue -+ se MAY 25, 1868, SPREADING MATTER ON EVERY PaAGs. OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TEL' 10 AND OTHER MATTER. POSTPONEMENT OF THE IMPEACH. ENT QUESTION. It would not surprise us very much if ac- tion upon the remaining ten articles of im- peacbment was to-morrow postponed indeti- nitely, or until the time of the expiration of President Johnson's term of office. A good many Republicans hold that it would be a wholesome thing to keep impeachment hanging | over the President's head asa sort of Damocles sword that might “drap” at any moment should ke bounce around unduly in his official seat. The Chronicle in some significantly italicised yascages of its leading editorial, hints its belief im the wholesomeness of such a procedure. ‘The Chronicle charges that one of the means Telied upon for success by the Democratic managers in the next election is to count the ‘votes of the rebel constituencies created by Presidential edict, and exclude the vote of the corstituencies regularly created by law. Itis stated still farther that, if necessary, this plan is to be carried out by force of arms. Initiated Democrats speak with confidence of | the success of this programme. They will have the executive power in their own hands, the army and navy under the control of their own leaders—Grant and Stanton both being out of the way by that time—and who will dare resist the execution of their plot? But as anelement of success im their plans, they are | especially snxious for a total acquittal of the | President upon all the articles. This they think will encourage him in the exercise of all the vast powers he has claimed, and give him backbone enough to carry them triumphantly through agaist all opposition. The thing they ‘mest fear now is that action om the other ten articles | will be postponed, leaving them suspended over his dead, and withheding from him that full and ¢r- plicit zonction of his usurpations which they covet. GRANT STARTS WELL.—The Republican pa- pers—impenchment ‘and anti-impeachment— endorse Grant, and the independent press has generally a good word for him. Even the New York Herald, which, though not over-con- sistent in its course, is generally a pretty good refiex of popular sentiment, comes out decided. | ly Grantish. The Heraid says : “The first of our military Presidents wa: Washington, who, after securing the indepen. | dence of the country, put its republican con- stitution imto practical operation. He was th» best of all our dents. The next soldier of the Revolution elected President was Monroe, whose administration was “the era of good ferling.” The next military here adyanced to the White House was General Jackson, as the “Hero of New Orleans.” Next came General Harris by the offce seekers, after a mouth of dential tortures. Next came General or, Whose life was sacrificed in the White ¢ under the same cruelties, Now comes ral Grant, who, a3 4 speech-maker aad letier writer, ‘fs as reticent as “Old Zack,” while asa soldier he eclipses “Old Hickory,” Sed while as a citizen, he is unpretending as id Tippecance.” ‘We ean hardly expect that, if elected, he will give us the perfect ad. miristration of Washington, but we haye reason to think tbat he will ayoid the turbu- lence of Jackson and will restore to us, to a great extent, the -era of good feeling of Mon- tee." and the obliteration ofall the party lines | ofthe day in the nicely balanced policy of his administration.” The generalship displayed by Mr. John D. Defrees in the nomination of Mr. Colfax is the subject of much compliment. “Agate” the brilliant correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette dentis! manager through the con- congratulate himself upon the re- Wednesday night, he assured me that Colfsx would be nominated on the fifth ballot. Itis evident that be counted on the precise course which Pennsylvania took, and more | than probable tbat he had grounds for such calculation. Defrees has managed the contest xery quietly and adroitly. It is noticeable. too. that it was done on strict temperance prin- ciples. For a marvel in such affairs, it was oh served that nota drop of liquor of any kind was to be had arourd the headquarters of the Indiana candidate. It will bea good thing if the result shall help to banish the not very creditable practice of urging each candidate s claims over a great array of bottles. Theun. | pply of tree ‘whisky at the Wade | ji limited beadquart id quite as much harm as good. and the same may be said of the similar dis. plays by the “firet friends” of other candi- dates.” Our Streets are generally in such a horrid condition that any effort to improve them onght to be regarded with favor. But the filling up | ef mud holes with ashes and other back yard garbage, as has been done on some of our best Streets and avenues, does not come under the | name of improvement, and in the name of de- | cemcy we protest against against it. The re. | sult is onsightly and unbealthy, and the nau- seous smells and fine dust arising trom such filthy deposits are even more objectionable and offensive than mud holes, bad as they are. A Practice so reprehensible in every respect ought to be discontinued at once. If the proper au- thorities are not able to procure gravei or other | itable material with which to repair the Teets, 1t seems to ws our citizens would go to that expense individually—each so far as bis own immediate front ts concerned—rather than have their eyes and noses offended in the man- ner indreated above. Some of them, we know, would be glad to have the option. ANOTHER DEFEAT OF THE DISRAELI Uan- INFT.—The Disraeli Ministry bas experienced r defeat on the Irish church bill, the consideration of which was resumed in the Howse of Commous on Friday evenin yote on the second reading of the bill stood— yeas 312, nays 5%, leaving the Ministry in a minority of 54. Mr. Gladstone, in his speech: took ground against subsidizing any religion in Ireiand. This position of the leader of the Liberal party in England is highly significant, | and shows that the voluntary system is making | great strides in England. Mr. Disraeli ob. yected that the tendency of this policy was to the abolition of both Church and State, and tried to make the most of his argument. But this cry seems to have lost its force with the Enghsh people, who would probably not ob- ject to the disestablishment of the English as well as the Irish Church, ‘he former sitting at Albany and the fatter at Harnsburg—the formal plan for a reunion ot by the respective members of the joint commit. sppointed in 1866 and continued by the As. semblies of 187. This plan contemplates a fect reunion and merging of the two hes in oi Excusa Or At the National Theatre this evening the excellent English Opera Troupe of Miss Richings commences a short season, with Flotow's opera of “Martha.” The | cast meludes Miss Richings, Mrs. Seguin, Mr. Castle, Mr. Seguin, Mr. Campbell, and Mr. Peages. The orchestra is reported to have been Well selected, and the chorus full and efficient; Mr Behrens conductor. OLe Burt.—This wonderfui musician will give two concerts im this city before he leaves the country. They will take place at Metze- rott Hall, on Wednesday and Thursday even- ings: and as it is probable we will never again bave the privilege of listening to the magic strains of Bis violin, these opportunities should not be neglected. He will be assisted by o-her eminent musicians, both vocal and instru- mental. The sale of seats is now in progress at Metzerott’s music store. The National Division of Sous of Temper- ance, at Nashville, nave selected Washington and the second Monday in June, 1969, as the place and time of the next annual meeting. ‘The anniversary address was delivered by Rev. R.A.Young. Rs M Foust, of Peunsyivania was elected Most Worthy Patriarch, and J.’ Curry, ot Tennessee, Most Worthy Associate. Senator Wilson was in Boston on Friday. He did not eem to be much dejected im conse. quence of his failure at Chicago, and expressed great satisfaction with the nominees. sv Edward B.
