on el THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Cirenlation in the District. | CROSBY S. NOYES........--Editer. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY... --1tMAY 23, 1563e | SPREADING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELB- G@BAPHIO ABD OTHER MATTEB. THE ANTI-IMPEACHMENT SENATORS The Republican platform adopted at Chi- cago, it will be seen, while sustaining the doc- trine of impeachment, very wisely avoids un- dertaking to read out of the party those Re- publican Senators who voted “not guilty.” It is well known here that Senator Fessenden bas steadily held that the best interests of the Re- | publican party would be advanced by throwing aside the impeachment business as a party measure. The New York Times says in this | connection, that + No chird party, by whomso- | ever led, can enroll Senators Fessenden, | Grimes, and Trumbuli among its members. ‘These gentlemen, as there is the best authority | for stating, are all for Grant, and entertain no other political purpose than to do what in them lies for bis success on the Chicago platform during the coming campaign. They have no | difference with the Republican party on any leading question, except the President's guilt | under the impeachment articles presented by | the House, and are as strong now as ever in the faith and cenviction that tne well-being and | prosperity of the whole country will be best promoted by the wise carrying out of Repub- licap principles.” The New York Sun says “This 1s the simple common sense of the mat- ter,and no Republican politician, except the tools, has ever thought of turning these Sena- tors out of that party. We can tell the Repub- licans, too, that they have no votes to throw d that they had better enlarge their party rather than diminish it, if they wish to carry the next election.” Tae Workixe Pzorie—The Journeymen | § Plasterers of this city still continue their strike for $5 per day. Many of them have left the city to seek employment elsewhere. The Master Plasterers, by taking the trowel themselves, and by the aid of their apprentices and such I bor as they can procure from other places, have been able thus far te carry on their work; but the jours expect that when the busy season comes the bosses will have tosuccumb. The latter, however, express their ability and de- termination to hold out to theend. The New | York piano-forte makers, 800 in number, have succeeded in obtaining the advance of 10 per cent. on ther present rate of wages, the princi- pal establishment having acceded to the de- mands of the men, and the other manufactu- rers baying agreed to abide by the decision. ‘The stair builders in New York, now obtaining | wages from $3.75 to $4 per day. are making ar. rangements to demand a general advance to $4.25. The New York brass founders and fiv ishers, having succeeded in their appeal for a return to the old rates of $3 per day, which were paid before the general reduction last winter. are preparing to ask a further increase | {njtheinrovme. 349 Pent to $3.50. The workmen in one shop are on a strike im consequence of the retusal of the boss to pay the $3 per day. The window-shade painters in New York, principally Germans, earning on an avers, Piece work. propose to invite the window- shade painters to join with them in an associa- | tion for their common benefit. Tue Vote ror Vice Presipent.—There has | been some surprise expressed that the vote for Mr. Hamlin, of Maine, did not reach a higher figure as a nominee for the Vice Presidency at Chicago, in view of the tact that he loomed up prominently in current speculation as the | obable compromise candidate. It seems, | bowever, that the Eastern delegates could not agree amongst themselves, The friends of Mr Wilson, for instance, held that having the highest number of New England delegates for their candidate, there was no reason why they | should yield to one who had only the votes of his State. New York, also, voted straight through for Fenton, and there seems to have been throughout failure on the part of the Eastern men to come toany understanding. — | We doubt if Mr. Hamlin was particularity | anxious for the nomination. It is well-known | that he prefers to come to the United States Senate in the place of Mr. Morrill. But Mr. | Morrill bas made himself so acceptable to the | people of Maine in that position that they de- sire to re-elect him; andthe mutual triends of | Messrs. Morrill and Hamlin thought that the difMculty of a contest im the party over the Senatorship might be avoided by the nomina- tion of Hamlin tor the Vice Presidency. ‘The cable informs us that Home, the so-called | spiritualist, who bas been before the Court of | *™°' Chancery, through obtaining an immense sum of money from a wealthy old lady named Lyon. by means of jugglery and deception, will be compelled to disgorge sixty thousand pounds sterling. He had induced his foolish victim to pame him im ber will foran enormous estate, | but of course she bas altered that long ago ‘The Court decided that Mrs. Lyon had parted with ber money in consequence of « undue in- ftuence and ballucination.” The result will cause a great commotion among the table-tip- | pers, as it plainly pronounced their preten- | tions to deal with the supernatural a mere sham. CORRECTING THE ReoistRATION.—Our citi- zens should bear in mind that the Judges of Election will be in session at the City Hall on Monday and Tuesday next, for the purpose of revising and correcting the jists of registered voters im each ward. This will be the last chance of baying errors corrected and omis- sions of names supplied prior to the election; and no voter who has failed to have his name recorded on the list, or who is erroneously registered, shou'd miss the opportunity of | nm qualitymg bimself to cast his vote for the can- didates of bis choice on election day. Ove Bert's FAREW L Cox 8.—Ole Balt will favor our citizens with two concerts at | Metzerott Hall on Wednesday and Thursday evenings next. These concerts afford the last opportunity our citizens will have of hearing the greatest living violinist, as he sails for Eu- rope on the 6th of June., The Richings English Opera Troupe is steadily gaining im popularity, aud the season which opens at the National Theater on Mon- day evening next will no doubt be a highly | successful one. Tickets for “Martha,” which is announced for Monday night, should be se- | cured at once. A Philadelpbia paper says:—“ Why is it that when cows stand knee deep in grass the price of buiter sould be flity-five cents a | pourd ™ The conundrum is given up hereabouts. ee ee } ‘The annusi examination of the cadets at An- | napolis commenced yesterday. “Wave Dereatep ny THE OnI0 ATES. He was willing wo give 3 complimentary vote to Wade, but be. [ond that be would not commit himself, Was frank to say that he was pone te Wade's nomination. In this Mr. Me ‘arland beliewed himself to be representing his District, sud doing the best thing he could for bis part: He conscientiously believed that the nomin: tiew of Wade would weaken the Presidential \icket im Obio, and on that faith hi course. Several other delegates agreed with him in thr se views—more, indeed, than backed their belief by their vous. The knowledge of this defection im the Obio ranks could not, of course, bé concealed from the delegation of oth- er States, spd ho magnitude was greatly exag- ‘erated, Ull many came to sus; ect that criti? ‘naif the Obio men really in. terest ip the success of their can: legation, busily ‘spread a ted that Wade was unpopular in urged the indiscretion of hus raven epeaches, and declared thst Colfax or Hamlin wonld secure te more 1otes in Ubio Wi a secured a beay Sa ce iesaends. fr of Hoe. loway, who ‘asvoted Dimesit to the Dusipess of Wade. A bill is now before Congress making 4 small Sppropriation in aid of the experiment for the artificial propagation of shad in the Potomac. | We trust it will be passed, and should be giad, | also, to see similar appropriations made for | the same purpose on the Delaware, Hudson, Connecticut, and other rivers resorted to by shad. Tle experiments made by Seth Green: the well-known fish-breeder, (who is now ia this city,) demonstrate the entire success and economy of restocking our rivers with fish, Fish of any variety can be artificially bred in any desirable quantity, amd turned into the streams where they are to grow. Man basin a measure control of these migratory fish, and with suitable legisiation can make their enor- mous fecundity tributary to his support. The economy of the artificial over the natural method is much greater than we had supposed. Itis nearly as fifty toone. Every river can be stocked with fish, at small cost, to the extreme limit of its capacity to nourish them. {t will not cost so much to hatch a million of shad in the waters of the Potomac as it does to raise a single calf upon its banks, The finest varieties of fish ought to be the cheapest food in the market, and cannot fail ta be, if the example of the New England States is followed in encouraging artificial breeding. The experiments of Mr. Green in shad culture at South Hadley Falis, show ’—First. The eggs need river water to hatch in. He first tried his experiment ina brook, where the water was thirteen degrees too cold, and failed. Sec- ond. Im the river, where the temperature was about 7# degrees, the eggs hatched in sixty hours. Eggs have been hatched in 3 bottle, in ‘& warmer temperature, im forty-eight hours. Third. By tilting bis boxes, so as to expose only the wire gauze bottom to the current, he hatched almost every egg, only seven failing to hatch in one lot of 10,000. Fourth. With the utmost care he could batch on the natural | river bed only two per cent. of the eggs—a fact most significant ot the enormous loss in the natural method.
