Who desired to express | personally to bim their sttistaction at the choice ofthe Chicago Convention. Many of the tel- egrams received last evening were highly con- gratulatory in their character, and though the General must naturally bave b-en much grat- iffed at the unanimity of sentiment in his favor, he preserved his usual undemonstrative man- ner. Upon reeeiving the congratulations of Major General Howard, he quietly remarked that he was sorry that the Convention had not taken upa more worthy champion, but, as i: had selected him. he would accept the respon- sibility, and if elected perform his duties con- scientiously. CoxGRaTULATIONS TO SPEAKER GoLFAx.— Speaker Colfax was yesterday the recipient of 8 series of complimentary calls, extending throughout the entire day and evening. The Speaker's room at the Capitol was crowded during the entire day, and the Speaker re- ceived numerous dispatches from William Or- ten, President of the Western Union Telegraph Company, who forwarded dispatches every few minutes, both to Speaker Colfax and Sena- tor Wade. The third and fourth dispatches, announcing continued gains for Mr. Colfax, were received with applause, and the tollow- ing, which was the last, created general enthu- siasm among Mr. Colfax’s friends: CHicaGo, May 21, 1568,—Hon. Among those present during the day were Senator Harlan, Messrs. Banks, Paine, Washburn of Indiana, Orth, Higby, Loughridge, Wilson, Robertson, Laflin, Van Horn, Hunter, and other prominent persons. During the evening Speaker Colfax replied to Mr. @rton’s telegram as follows: Wasuineton, D.C., May 21.—W.Orton, Pres- ident Western Union Tevegraph Company: Thanks for the many teiegrams you bave sent me to- day. THE IMPEACHMENT INVESTIGATION.—The Managers of Impeachment were in session again yesterday at the Judiciary Committee Toom of the House of Representatives. The members of the Committee present were Messrs, Batler, Wilson, Williams and Boutwell, end the Managers were eugaged for some time in the examination of telegrams. Telegraph meu from the several offices in Baltimore having been summoned were present. The demand ct the Managers was for all the despatches in the several offices, but some of the officers ot the telegraph companies having demurred, they have agreed to designate such telegrams x= they need. Mr. Woolley was not present, plead- ing illness. Col. Cooper, Acting Assistant Secretary ot the Treasury, and late private secretary to the President, Was examined, and questioned if he Was approached by any person to use money for the acquittal of the President. He an- swered —“ Yes: a person sought an interview with bim, acting in the name of and by the au- thority of S. ©. Pomeroy, Senator from Kun. sas, and proposed for forty thousand dollars, cab im band, that he (Pomeroy) would con- trol foar Republican votes, aud bis own, so a+ insure the acquittal of the President, = hess professed to doubt bis authority, and the Person then brought « letter from Senatur Pom- eroy, dated “Senate Chamber. —— day of —,” as iollows ‘Six: I will, in good faith, carry out any ar- rangement made with my brother-in-law, W lis Gaylord, to which I am a party. (Signed) S.C. Pomeroy, t ator. General Butler objected to witness proving contents of letter, as he (Butler) would produce the letter Willis Gaylord was introduced by the pe: son first calling. The letter was read to w: uess and Guylord by the person, who then tired, when Gaylord renewed the proposi:ion that for $40,040) ‘cash, and the distribution of Patronage, the five Republican votes, includ- ing Senator Pomeroy’s own, would be so cast 4s to imsure the acquittal of the President. The witness believed at the time the proposi- tion was intended to entrap him. Witness as- signed 48 @ reason for this belief that Senator Pomeroy was a strong partisan: that he felt ‘bitterly towards the President, and that if money was his object, the party to which he belonged was better able to pay than the friends of the President. In additioa to which, in the list of names Senator Pomeroy Proposed to control, appeared the name of Sen- ator Morton, of Indiana; and witness did not believe it possible that Senator Morton’s vote could be so obtained. The name of Senator Nye was a’so on the hist. Considerable comment bas been excited by the reports in regard to this evidence of Coop- ers, and we learo that Senator Pomeroy will publish a statement in relation to the matter, which, it is alleged, will put the boot “on the other leg.” The Managers are in session again to-day Conviscarep PROPERTY.—The President transmitted to the Senate yesterday, in con- formity with a resolution passed December 17.
