GRAPHIO AND OTHER MATTE! SFRENADE TO GRANT AND COLFAX. We are requested to announce that a serenade will be given to-night co General Grant and Speoker Colfax, at their respective residences Citizens are invited to meet at the Baltimore Depot at §& o'clock to take part in the affur e-—___ GRANT AND COLFAX. Cur special dispatches yesterday kept the Public informed through the day of the im- portant proceedings at the Chicago Convention up to the time of its adjonrament. The nomi- pation of Grant was deemed a forezone con- clusion, and everybody was prepared to heir it ANnounced: but the contest on the Vice Pres— | idetcy was so close, and the indicatiens from | hour to hour so varying that very great inter- | est was felt in the result, as shown by the | crowd congregated about onr office. Shortly before six o'clock 2 Star ExTRa annoanced that Mr. Colfax had received the nomination, casing some surprise, as it had not been anth | cipated that the contest would be closed so | Seon. To Mr. Colfax the result seems to have | beem more particularly gratifying, from the | known fact that be has not taken any active part in the canvass for the nomination. ‘The Republican ticket, Grant and Colfax, is | concededly 8 strong one; both candidates pos- sessing im a remarkable degree the qualities | that elicit popular enthusiasm, and both being imyulverable to attack on the ground of char- neter, or record. In evenness of temper, and harmony and balance of mind, they are nor unlike. With Gen. Grant's career the public is so familisr that we nerd not refer to it. The rise of Mr Coltax to his présent eminence, though | not as sudden as that of (reneral Grant, is quite as remarkable im illustrating what may be effected under our institutions by energy and integrity of character in rising through unpropitious surroundings to the highest places in the nation. Schuyler Colfax was born in New York city | im 1883, and was the only son of a widowed mother. He received an ordinary common | school education, and then obtained a clerk- | ship ima store. After three years service removed to Indiana, where, showing ability S writer, he became connected with a news- psper st South Bend, was elected to Congress im 1553, we believe, and has been Te-elected by large majorities. In I-63 he was elected Speaker of the House of Represents tives. a position he has filled so unexception- Ably that be has been re-elected again and again simost without opposition. Pure in eharscter. courteous, fair and just, we doubt it | he bas an enemy in the world. THE CHICAGO PLATFORM. The platform adopted at the Chicago Repub- hean Convention is very much what we have bitherto indicated our belief it would b>. The impeschment policy is sustained, and the | President sharply condemned, but no attempt , i= made to read out of the party the Republican | Senators who voted not guilty. The question of universal suffrage is provided for at the South, while in the North it is remitted to the several States to be dealt with. The currency «question is treated rather vaguely, but yet with a bral hint dee! son that the national credit must be maintained, and that the national ob- Ligstions must be paid in letter and spirit. Tax. | ™ should be equalized and reduc as rapidty as possible. and the redemption of tho Batiopal debt be extended over a lo The resolutions declare tor American citizens abroad; for soldiers bounties; for a liberal emigration policy, and express sympathy with the op- pressed of all nations. Ou the whole the reso. lutions seem pretty skillfully drawn, avoiding obvious breakers and laying down a base broad enough to hold all shades ef the Repub- hie: art; | ConroraL Punisument 1x Sowoots —A | Teport bas been presented to the Massachusetts | Legisiature by the Committee on Education, relative to the abolition of corporal punich- ment in public schools. It was set forth in the | majority report that the practice was unwise. unecessary and demoralizing in its effec:s | upon both teachers and scholars. Yetthe com- mittee deemed it inexpedient tolezislate th on, inasmuch as the power to do away with the practice is lodged in school committees ‘The minority report gives many reasons why | corporal punishment <hould not be infheted, | And numerous authorities are cited tosubstan- | tinte the opinion of the minority, the report closing with a recommendation a bill be passed forbidding corporal punishment in all schoot@of the commonwealth. Mr. Clarke, of | the Senate, the chairman of the committer, also | presented a minority report, in which he says | that while he dissents from some of the stits. | ments of bis associates, be feels constrain~i to unite with the majority in their conclusion. Pendleton men bere are much elated by the fect that the Democratic State Convention of Massachusetts, which assembled Wednesday a; | Worcester to choose delegates to the National | Democratic Convention, adopted a resolution | im fevor of the nomination of George H. Seldom hats the temperature been so uniform and the groun so constantly covered with gow; itlons fa vorable to the vitality and Bealthfalness of the wheat plant. Almost the only eompiaint of Winter freezing and thawing, and consequent winter-killing comes from the Iatituds of Ten- nessee and southern Kentucky, where com- paratively small breadths ot wheat are sown. ‘The New England States, now scarcely con- sidered wheat growing, are awakening to the necessary tmportanee of the bread supply, and are encouraged to attempt wheat culture more jJargely by the fine condition of that now in the ground. Notwithstanding the steady cold of the long winter was remarkable, extending to | the Connecticut shores of Long Isiand sound. The season was equally favorable in the Mid- die States, which report few discouraging facts affecting winter crops. Throughout New Jer- sey, Pennsylvania and Delaware there is a general expression of satisfaction with the con- dition of wheat, and a confident expecta- tion of a fruitful barvest if no casualty in tervenes. Iu the Obio valley, and in the northwest, wheat generally looks well. In West Virginia, Putnam and Wood counties rrport inferior condition from winter-ktlling. others claim a better stand than for many year: From Indiana the accounts of the crop are u tormly favorable. In Kentucky there is much diversity in the appearance, and not a little complaint of winter-killing. In Illinois, and especially im the northwest, the fall-sown gen- erally looks well. Very little loss from freez- ing is reported from Missouri. From Virgi North Gkrolina, and Tennessee the condition reported is more variable. More or less win- ter-killing resulted in the belt between the 36th and 39th degrees of latitude from alternate freezing and thawing, the covering of snow being more general than usual, but not of suffi. ceint depth for protection. A few counties only make the loss severe, and many represent | the prospect for harvest unusually good. Fur- ther South accounts favor an abundant har- yest in proportion to acreage sown. It is worthy of mention and of careful no- tice, that in every locality that has suffered trom freezing, those fields that were planted | with the drill are comparatively unscathed, while the broadcast sowing is in miserable condition; and it is also found that thorough tillage enables the thrifty aud well-rooted plant toendure the action of frost, while the y seeded wheat is ruined.
