THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation in the District, CROSBY 6S. NOVES.. Editer. WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY.. APRIB 27, 1568, S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PacE. SEB OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. THE JUNE ELECTION. The registration in the First and Sand” ‘Wards indicated considerable apathy on .r¢ partof the white voters: and served to dwar? the interest in the coming election, from the supposition that it would be a altogether a jag- bandied affair. The Conservatives of the Third | and Fourth Wards have, however, made so Active @ canvass as to pnt them smartly ahead in the aggregate registration of the two wards, though the Republicans claim to have three hundred white yocers in the Third Ward, or | enongh to still give them the ward. The result, | however, of the registration in th has been to give the Conservatives strong hopes of carrying the city, and ¢he canvass in the wards yet to be registered will, undonbt- | edly, be very active on both sides, Whatever be the result, and quite aside from any political view of the matter, it isa healthfal sign that | the citizens generally, are now coming forward to register. When the property holders and those more directly interested in the property of acity, show themselves so fastidious, so care- jess, or so apathetic, as to fail to take part in | the choice of city officers they have no right to compiain if municipal affairs are not adminis- tered to their hiking. We hold it also to bea Wholesome state of affairs, when parties are Somewhat nearly balanced. In elections, where one party bas an overwhelming majority, a Tent deal of drift-wood is floried in; but where there is no great preponderance on either side, parties are obliged to put forward good men for office, and thus whichever side wins, the com- munity is in good hand: NOMINATE GOOD MEN As the ward nominating meetings are about to be held by the respective parties, for the se- lection of city officers, it seems to bea proper time to urge the necessity of selecting good men, both for the leading offices aud for ward offices; mea of high character and good busi- ness qualifications, who command the respect of the entire community, irrespective of party lines. At this jancture in the affairs of the city it will be suicidal in the first degree to our in- terests to be represented and governed by brawling politicitns, whose sole object in g: ing position 1s to subserve their own petty sel- fish interests. The future prosperity of Wash- ington depends much upon the sort of men put in office at this June election. We are at the terning point of our and need all th: gacity, energy, and integrity to bear in the managem Washington city is no: what it should b» as the capital city of the nation; and it is impera- tive that the men séle f officers should have the intellizen, supply a remedy. Prot. Fawcett presided, and the firs aker was Mr. James Heywood, who, in the course of an interesting address, pointed out one extreme case of the injustice of exclading women from Political rights. Yet the lady on whom the ac- duous task cevolved was by the laws of the lend deprived of any share in the government of the country. Thet was a state of things, said Mr. Hey wood, which certainly ou to be permitted toexist. Thomas Hughes fol lowed with narratives of~similar character, and finally a petition to Parliament was agreed to, which sets forth that won by law and in fact, te carry on admivister an estate, and to fill other positions, ‘which, both by investing them with interests Pequiting representation, and by affording tests of fituess, are usually considered to give a claim to the suffrage Deatu or How. Witttam C. Rives.—A dis- patch fom Charlottesville, Va., announ death of Hon. William ©. Rives. He served bis State repeatedly in the Legislatare, was in | Congress for three successive terms, and repre- sented this country im France in the exciting controversy with that Power during the ad- ministration of General Jackson. He served three terms also im the Senate of the United States. In 1849 President Taylor appointed bim asecond time Minister to France, where be remained until the administration of Presi- dent Pierce. In 1°61 he was a member of the ‘State Senate and of the Convention, and in both bodies bitterly opposed the ordinance of seces. ston. After the adoption of the ordinance be continued in the Senate and was one of the staunchest supporters of the Confederate Gov- erument. Tux Orena Bourre.—Next week we are to bave at the National Theater the grand Opera Bouffe. We nved not say anything abont « La Grande Duchesse.” Its music lingers pleas- antly in the memories of opern-goers. It was the great success of theseason here, and there is pot one who listened to it who would not gladly do so again. It will be given three nights, te be followed by that gem of Offen- bach’s, “La Belle Helene,” which is said by ‘those who are tamiliar with it to be superior ar comic opera, in music and sitaations, even to « La Grande Duchesse,” which is the high. est praise. Tux Crr¥ Covnctts will doubtless perfect the bill 1o-night providing for more election precinets. It it imperatively necessary that Provision should be made at once to secure nd- ditional voting facilities at the coming election, aud severe blame will foliow the failure to furnith ample opportunity for all voters to cast their ballots. aot G7 The coroner's jury ia the Erie disaster Dave rendered a verdtet, de» ee the apeed of the train at the time of the accident ‘was thirty miles an bour, which, considering | | ‘the condition of the rails on tha: section. was Niyt ‘too fast for safety. “Fo Be” or not “io be” is tae question jnst | now agitating the puslic mind, im view ot the controversy whether the President Bominated General Schofieid in place of Mr. Stanton “re. moved,” of “to be removed.” Tre Om0Sxsatehas Tndealiay postponed @bdill to allow « higher rate of interest than six per cent. on special contract. | ese two Wards | are competent, busigess, to | he | THE IMPEACHMENT TRIAL.
