He was glad to be the welcomer of one | who had done more for the English tongue and tor English literature than, perhaps, any man ot his generation—one whose name was quite as favorite in America as in England, and whose literature was, in fact.an expession of the liberal democratic feeling of both countries | —one who was of the people and drew his in- *piration from the people. He then proposed | the sentiment— | Health and happiness—honorable and gener- ous, because a just recompense to our friend and guest, Chartes Dickens. And if it were otherwise, they should have but a very poor aud mean opinion of that father, which perhaps Ihave not. (Applause and laughter.) Thus, gentlemen, under any circumstance: this company would have been unexceptio ably interesting and agreeable to me; but where. as 1 supposed that, like the fairies’ pavilion of the “Arabian Nights," it would be but a m-re ndful. But what I have intended and what I have resolyed on, and this is the confidenee I am about to place bat on my return to England, ia my glish journal, manfully, promptly, and , in my own person, to bear for the If of my countrymen such testimony of the beb gigantic changes in this country as I nave hinted here to-night. I was asked in this very city, about last Christmas time, whether an American was not at some disadvantage in England a¢ a foreigner? The notion of an American being regarded as a foreigner at all— of his ever being thought of or spoken of in that character—was so incongruous and ab- surd to me that my gravity was for the mo- ment quite overpowered. [Applause.] As soon as it was restored I said, that for many years past I had hoped I had as many Amer- ican friends and received as many American visitors as almost any Englisman living [ap- use}, and that my unvaried experivnes, for- d by others, that it was ‘enough in England | to be an American to be received with the most earnest respect and recognition any- where, Herenpon but half a dozen people suddenly spoke out. When an American tleman of cultivated taste for art, who, finding | himself on a certain Si day, outside the wall of @ certain historical English castle, famous | for its pictures, was refused admission there, according to the strict rules of the place on that day, but by merely representing that he was an American gentleman on bis trayels, and bad yet to see the picture gallery, the whole castle Was placed at his immediate disposal. (Great applause and laughter.) There was a lady, toe, being in London, aod having a great de- sire to see the famous reading-room of the Brit- ish Museum, was assured by the English fam- ily with which sbe staid it was unfor- tunately impossible, because the place was | closed for s week, and rhe had only three days | there.
