THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. nS Amusements, &c., To- Night. Natrona Tueater.—Last night of Mr. Jef- ferson as“Rip Van Winkle.” MerzenotT Hati.—Lart night in this city of Mr. Aif. Burnett and Miss Hielen Nash. EES EE: Registration in the Second Ward. The Judges of Election were again in ses- sion in the Second Ward yesterday afternoon, im the room at the southeast corner of G and ‘Thirteenth streets. In the first half hour they recorded the names of 236 colored men and 2= White men. Police cfficers were in attendance» to prevent any unnecessary crowding about the doors and windows, and to see thai the sie and firemen, and others whose duties made it necessary for them to leave a: soon as possi- bie, were not compelled to stad in the line. The rush was, however, over by four o'clock, and from that hour to six there wis b necessity for parties to wait over a few min- utes. the registration being quite brisk during the last hour. Among the first to register wus Moses bobrer, an old colored man who stam- mered so much that those in his rear grew im- atient while he informed the registers « Dat -I-D've been he-he-bere b-b-bout f-f-f-four y-years, s-sir.” A white man hailing from the northern part of the ward came up with the remark, *+ I'm here to fight you again, from Goore Dung Level.” Thos. Bowman, (col..) who said that he lived at 16th and ( streets, «not om de corner, butin de middle of de street,” was Tejected—that locality being out of the ward: but George Ward, a venerable colored man, who “cum yer “fore the bellyun tuck place,” was registered. Thos. Johnson, who gave his residence in the ward as “Two twelve mouths,” was booked as a voter. Lewis Short gave the locality of bis residence as back of that church, (pointing to one of the four churches near by,) and beiug tela to goto Marshall Brown, who would tell him where he lived, Proper information. During the hurr: in consequence of some of the whi ing dark complexioned, and the colored being bright, s few mistakes were made by placing ames on,the wrong sides of the books, (one side being for white and one for black voters.) but they were quickly changed. A:nong the common and uncommon names were Jobn Wesley, Smiths and Browns wd libitum. Ben. Butler, 'V street, between 1th and Lith: Henry May, George Hartshorn, Jas. A. Polk- mong the colored. Of those registering yesterda: upper portion of the ward fur- nisbed the largest number, Vermont avenue, between Q and K streets, being well represent- ed, as also Chestnut street, but neither locality bas as yet furnished the number of colored voters they did last year. It was remarked that a large proportion hailed from the middie of squares and on the corners, and but few com- paratively gave their residences on one street be- tween two others. Among other localities given Was Union alley, between lth and 1:th streets, which is said to be the alley running from M snd N streets, and Manassas alley, in the square bounded by 12th and 13th streets, and P snd Q streets. It would appear that the morals of many are improving, especially those from Murder Bay, who, except ina few | cases, gaye that locality as 1th street. near the canal, or between Band ©. During the regis. tration yesterday one of the colored challen- gets, S/ McFarland, called attention to the fact that one man’s name had been twice registered, once on each book and he was advised by the Tegisters t0 procure & warrant for the man. ‘The afternoon's work footed up: whites, 241: colored, Sp total. 8i4. Thenumber registered thus fa: in this Ward is whites, 6-5; colored, 74; making a total of 1,454; a colored majority ofits. Last year the total number registared ap the two first days was 1,2U6, of whom 413 were white, and 73 colored. Thursday a soldier presented bimself tor Tegistration, but was refused, he being station- ed in the First Ward and his family residing in the Sixth. When the Board were in session in the First Ward, several soldiers were regis. tered, some of whom bad been in the ward for years. It is stated now that Mr. Bowen holds that soldiers are not entitled to vote except | Where they hold their residences. Others of | the Board hold a different view. It is under- steod that they will take legs! advice on this | question before the correction of the lists.
