There is @controversy now going on in some of the New York papers as to the relative ad- vantages of wide and narrow streets. The ad- vocates of the latter have started the curious | heory that business men prefer narrow streets: but their opponents demonstrate by examples, that business men prefer wide streets, if they are in the path of business, and if rents are not | too high for them; instancing Broadway and | Canal streets in New York, Fulton street in Brooklyn, Lake street in Chicago, Fourth street | in St. Louis, St. Charles street in New Orleans, | Market street in Philadelphia, and Baltimore | street in Baltimore. Boston has no very wide streets; but Washington and Milk street#are | among the widest, and are the chief business streets. We have heard itsuggested that whole. | sale trade seeks narrow streets, and retail trade wide streets. If so, why «0? | In this city we haye had no experience in | narrow streets, but are able to yudge pretty cor- rectly of the merits and demerits of wide | horoughfares. So far as business is concerned we baye no doubt trade follows population, | aud that the course of traffic is determined by | other camses than the width of the channels in | which itmay happen to run. Pennsylvania avenue woujd no doubt be our principal street, if at was only one haif its present width, or if it was twice as wide as now. The windy weather which 1s at the time we write whirling clouds | t through our streets and avenues, blind- ing and choking pedestrians, and forcing an entrance through doors and windows, mach to the annoyance of good housewives. furnishes | he stfongest argument against wide streets; but, on the other hand, even that nuisance in- dicates the presence cf healthful air, without ¥ bieb the dust could not rise The expense of pavmg and keeping wide streets in repair, is nother objection; but once they are paved here dust nuisance will ne doubt be measureably abated.
