The contest between the New York Central Railroad and the Erie Railroad continues to be ‘the all-absorbing topic in the North and West, completely overshadowing for the time being the matter of impeachment. As the merits of the fight do not seem to be understood by many, a brief history of the affair may be of interest, Cornelius Vanderbilt, President of the Central Railroad, has bent all bis energies to the work of building upa gigantic railroad monopoly which should control all the rail- road communications of New York with the West. Tothis end he undertook to get sion of the rival Erie road by secretly pur- chasing $16,000,000 of the Erie stock, represent- img a majority of the shares. To head him off Daniel Drew, President of the Erie Road, issues $,000,000 more stock, osten- | sibly to carry out the project of making a broad guage connection between New York and Chncago, but with the more immediate result of so “watering” the stock that Vanderbilt’s £8,000.000 will not constitute a majority. The direct master at issue, it will be seen, is the possession of the Erie railway direetion, and the question whether the road shall remain under its present management or pass into the | *ame hands that now control the New York Central, Hudson River, and Harlem roads. ‘The sympathies of the people, however. are with Drew and against Vanderbilt; not with the former as an individual, but with the side he represents. The New York Central road has always been a grasping, overbearing cor- poration, buying up Legislatures at wholesale | and endeavoring to coutrol the politics of the State. It meets with little sympathy outside its own dependents, and there is a general ap- | prehension that if it possessed the opportanity, through « monopoly of all the trunk lines, it | would prevent any extension of the Erte broad guage te the West, and would show po mercy to the public in its monopoly rates of fare and | freight. Both roads are meantime erdeavoring to | obtain favorable legisl: Albany for their | respective sides, the D: 7 tauth to issue additional stock, and party to prevent it. The President and Di of the Erie Company, to avoid legal pro ings mstituted by Vanderbilt to prevent tl Perfection ofthe transfer of the new removed their office, assets, &c., to New Jer- sey, and have procured the passage of a bill by the Legrsiature of New Jersey authorizing them aneaet their business in that State, Thus the quarrel stands at present: and we as a significant straw, showing the way the Legislature of New York is likely to decide bay? case Marker in New York yesterday was beyond anything experienced during the present finahcial crisis and even « borrowers found it almo=| impossible te procure cash at any rate of interest. Some of the panks were augmenting the trouble by charging. contrary to the law, Seven per cent. in gold for loans, a rate almost equivalent to ten per cent, in currency. In other cases seven Per cent. in currency was charged, anda commission of \ besides. These rates are charged oa Governments as well as on other collaterals. Outside the banks the rate is generally seven per cent. in gold, in some cases, with a commission extra. It is umpossible that the present condition of affairs should continue much longer without serions results. The proposed arrangement noticed in our financial column yesterday, for the issue of $10,010,040 clearing-house certificates, wes re- jected by the banks, and they did not suggest any other plan more agreeable to their views. They will have another meeting to-day, how. ever, when it fs thought they will reconsider their action. It has been suggested that the ‘Treasury issue three per cent. Clearing Honse Certificates to the banks for curren: the Treasury purchase, with Seven-thirty Notes. This looks feasibl wetrust some plan will be adopted to d the schemes of the parties whe are int» keepirg up the stringency, namely: t lenders, who, for years, have not made such profits as now: and the bears ic Governments, who having sold-out ! or 2 per cent. higher than present prices, are waiting to buy when bonds | touch bottom, aud meanwhile are lending their large surplus balances at high rates of inter. | est” Tak Worxixe Prorie.—The strke of near- ly one thousand employes in the Sprague mill | at Baltic, Conn., yet continues. They have been given till to-day to return to work. when, | if they do not respond, the mill doors will be | closed on them. In Massachusetts, it is said | that the boot and shoe trade continues to im. | prove, and business is brisk in Lynn and grow. | ing better in Haverhill and other towns. For some time past a strike bas existed among tne | shormakers of Marlborough. It appears that on Saturday @ fracas occurred with some shoe | makers who attempted to goto work against | the wishes of the strikers, during which a man | | was killed. The strike on the New York Cen- tral Railway is partially ended, the majority | of the men having gone to work at the rates offered by the Company. Some still hold out, however. It is announced that the workmen | at Brakman’s cotton mill, at Paterson, New | Jersey, struck on Thursday last. In the St. Helen's district of Great Britain 20,100 colliers are on a strike against a proposed reduction of their wages of 15 percent. They are will- ing to accept a reduction of 10 per cent., but to this, at present, the employers refuse to assent, Ix THE On10 Leoistattre, both Houses have at length passed the bil: to suppress | prize-fighting, and as the Governer bas no veio |* Power in that State, it is now alaw. This bill | declares that the principal performers in a prize-fight are punishable by imprisonment in the penitentiary, and that spectators and re- porters are liable to fine and imprisonment in jail. This is bad for the short-haired fraterni- ty who havearranged fora fight in Ohio be- tween Coburn and McCoole. They will! be compelled now to shift their fighting quarters to the soil of Kentucky, as the “mill” by agree- ment is to take place within a certain distance of Cincinnay. ° Mus.
