Mrs. and Miss Matthews’ closing afternoon reception will be Wedneeday, March 25th. Wx ARE AUTHORIZED TO ANNOUNoR that the Ladies of the Executive Mansion. Mrs. Patter- son and Mrs. Stover, will be at home on Mon- day evenings, after seven o'clock. The ever ing has been fixed upon for the drawing-room receptions of the ladies in lieu of the afternoon as during last season, and they will receive every Monday evening until farther notice. | —__-+-e -__ Lovpox County, Virersra, which it has been proposed to connect by rail with the Dis- (ict cities, is one of the richest in Virginia, ag- riculturaliy, producing large quantities of grain; and contains fine soil for garden purpo- | ses if there was a market convenient of access | for vegetables and fruits. The county is bound. | ed for forty miles on the north by the Potomae river, or from within one mile of Harper's Fer- | ry to Seneca Dam, a little above the Great Falls | of the Potomac, The Eastern line is twenty- | two miles from this city, and the Southern boundary from thirteen io twenty-five miles | trom Leesburg, and the Loudon & Hampshire | road, and from eight to twelve miles from the Manaseas Gap Railroad, at points varying from thirty to sixty miles from Alexandria, The Blue Ridge Mountains bound it on the West, | the Eastern line of the county being thirty-two | miles from that range, and the Fauquier line | about twenty-six miles from the Potomac river | at Berlin. Last June the track of the Alexandria, Lon- | don and Hampshire Railroad was relaid to Leesburg, the county seat, and the road 1s graded and the ties are ready for the iron to ‘Mereier’s depot, and a little money will carry it to Wheatland Station, the crossing of the Loudon and Berlin turnpike. Leesburg is 36, Mercier’s 42, and Wheatland 45 miles from this city. Our people are now agitating the ques- tion of a branch road connecting, probably, by way of the Little Falls, with the Loudon and Hampshire road, about eight or ten miles from Alexandria, When that railroad shall have been completed to Wheatland Station no farm in the county will be more than twelve miles from & railroad station, and none more than sixty miles from tide water at Washington, or more than three miles from a mill. But while we are talking about the matter Baltimore will probably step in and carry » the prize; although Harper's Ferry is eight one miles trom Baltimore, and the Point of Rocks sixty-nine, whilst they are respectively sixty-one and forty-nine from Georgetown by the canal. Along the banks ofthe Potomac the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, and the Baltimore ad Obio railroad rua, on the Maryland side, for thirteen miles, below Harper's Ferry, to the Point of Rocks, anc the canal follows toSenees. Ferries at Berlin; Poi Noland’s, He-wling’s. White's, Edward: ering 9 distance of thirty miles, allow of aceess (the first two to the railroad and canal, and the others) to the canal. Before the war there was a bridge at Perlin, four miles below Harper's Ferry, and another at the Point of Rocks. These were burnt during the war, but the sbutments and piers, of substantial masonry, are standing, and the Baltimore and Ohio rail road, which is extending its connections in every direction, is already contemplating a nection with the London and Hampshire by the construction of a railroad bridge on these piers at Berlin, and the laying down of a few mile carry off all the n portions of the county, which, as we hay ready shown. are much nearer to the market if @ connection is made. Tue Workixe Prorir.—The Sumner Falls mills of Lake Village, N H., which have been shut down several weeks, started up again last week. The railroad strikes in New York and the Fall River strikes among the cotton-spin- ners, bave influenced the female operatives in a thread factory at Newark, N. J., to show ther independence of low wages. They “struck” recently, filed into line, kicked over benches and other obstacles in their way, and taking the mid ones into custody. ‘They succerded in getting their demands ac- eded to. The Bricklayers’ Union in this cit, thorize the statement that they have no in ention of deviating from the standard fixed b —fovr dollars and fifty cents fora day's wages—the same as last season. The Journey men Bookbinders held Amertiog in this city Saturday night and adopted resolutions en- dlorsing the action of the journeymen plasterers | i striking for higher wages, appropriating $50 to be distributed among them pending the strike, and gave them the advice to stick. The | workmen on the New York Central railroad baveresumed at full time and fell pay. In ew York the journeymen house painters opted the eight-hour system on Monday last. nd are now working upon it. Tre Crvit War ty Jarax seems likely to | end in the triumph of the allied Damnios over he Tycoon. The latter, it is reported, has been ated in a severe engagement, and fled to | seks, where he was anxious to place himself | under the protection of the fleets of the European powers. The Mikado also is in ditheulty, having been arrested by the Daimio: and all the country is convulsed with revolu- | tion. The heads of this movement are the Daimior, or the aristocracy, who are very | adverse to the foreign policy of the Tycoon, as it would civilize the people, and thus lessen | their influence and power among them. It is & ttle singular that the European Admirals or | Commodores declined to assist the Tycoon, | who has incurred all this trouble by his new | policy m favor of European nations. The object, however, of the European nations, is to | obtain the trade of Japan, and not to mix up in | its domestic quarrels; but it is not likely the | naval commarders in Japanese waters will | see the Tycoon come to any bodily harm as Jong as there is a vessel to receive him. aa lg ‘Tae Exotrsu House of Commons Friday had an important debate on the naturalization Jaws. Mr. Forster urged the new regulation of the law and the appointment ofa mixed commission to that end. Lord Stanley ad. | mitted that the present naturalization laws were obsolet”, and he approved of the proposi- ton of Mr. Forster Thus there is reason -to | hope for the refnoval of one of the causes of | said disagreement between England and the United | States. pa ea eee Metnopist Eriscorat Catacu axy Lay | DrLEGATION.—As the time approaches for the | ning of the General Coaference of the M. | arch, which is to be held in Chicago, in May next, the subject of Iay representation is | becoming more and more interesting. From “Every Afternoon,” the New York daily, we clip the following item, which may possibly have a local interest: «“Intermarriages between American belles and European nobles nave become so frequent, that little remark Lod <a ya when one of them takes place. Nevertheless, we learn from a social gossip at Washingion that letters have been received from a lady who recently accom- | panied a Baron and bis bride to a Beigian chateau, which—while giying the most romantic description of the antiquity and Pic- turesquences the chatean and its draw- bridges and moat Tekyrinthine recesses— bint at the same time that the grandfather of proprietor was a linen merchant.” We tender eur commisseration, and trust the awful discovery hinted at will be survived. pier Lemiretrde Som PERSONAL.—Among those presumably at- tracted to Washington by the impeachment trial, commencing to-day, we notice R. H. Dana, Jr. and C. W. Slack, (editor of the Com- monwealth,) and wife, ot Boston, and Elliot C. Cowdin, and wife, and Francis Skiddy, and wife, of New York, and Mrs. General Rous- sean, at Willard’s; Albert D. Richardsen and Theodore R. Davis, of the New York press, at the Ebbi't House: and Jobn Forsythe, editor ot the Mobile Register, at the Metropolitan. THE crowD expected here to-day i conse- quence of the impeachment trial, very clear]; hasn‘t come, the registers of the several hote sbowing this morning a smaller than ordinary number of arrivals.
