"3 weekly receptions will close on the | last Friday of March. ————_~++e -—____ BUSINESS INDICATIONS. So great have been the demands of business men for space in the advertising columns of | the principal newspapers in New York that tor some time much of the room usually de voted to reading matter has been surrendered to them, and so great was the pressure in this respect on Saturday Iasi, that of the four leading morning papers, the Tribune and Herald were obliged to issue a triple, and the Worid a quad- ruple sheet. That so large a proportion should | at the same time so greatly enlarge their dimen- sions isa remarkable circumstance, and certi- fies in an unmistakable manner to both the sagacity of the advertisers and the enterprise of the publishers, who, for the sake of accommo- dating both classes of their patrons, are willing | to incur so considerable an expense in addition | enable them to deal with the nuisance. WHY THE HoGs SDN A® LARGE, This conundrum | in the Sra day or two agohas been 0 rn . The Metropolitan police deny faalt Tects with themp and trivmphanfly qgote the Corporation Ia’ to show the want Of law to The act of 1963 made it “the duty of every police of- ) ficer in this city to seize and take up every hog going at large, and convey the same to the ‘Washington. Asylum,” and the hog was for- feited to the use of the Asylum. Police officers failing to attend to this daty, or persons inter- fering with them in its diseharge were liable to afine. Anact approved March 2, 1963, pro- vides tbat a fine of twodollarsshall be ‘upon the owners of geese, kc, found running at large. Thi also provides that the Mayor may appoint from time to time oneor more pound masters, who shall furnishand maintam, without ex- pense or charge to the city, am enclosed yard for public pounds; and it further provides that any of the animals above mentioned may b> taken by any person and driven to said pound. The last seetion of this act repeals all acts or parts of acts inconsistent with this act An act approved April 14, 1566, repeals the act of 1863. Itis clnimed therefore by the police that the repealing clause of the act of 1563 did ) Sway with the act of 1853, and that the act of 1866 repealed the act of 1563, consequently that there is no law now prohibiting hogs from | running at large. Our corporation law-makers however hold that the act of 1566, repealing the ‘Act of 1863 brings the act of 183 again in force; and we notice that the act of 1853 appears in Webb's Digest as the operative law. Here is a difference ot opinion between the law makers and the police. The latter hold that in the matter of hog-hunting they haven't a legal leg to stand upon. Their souls are in arms, and eager for the fray, but the law won't bear them out. Now this must be remedied. The Constitution and the laws must be maintained, even though the hogs possess the land. The conscientions scruples of the police in this pig-business must be respected. Letour City Hall Solons make or unmake enough law to enable the police to to their very large daily outlays. Whether the greatly-increased advertising, Observable not only in the papers of New York | ‘but in those of all parts of the country, is to be regarded as an mdication of improvement in business, or only as an evidence that business men are more generally availing themselves of the advantages of advertising, is not easily de- termined. In all probability, however, it may be fairly interpreted as demonstrating both Propositions, so tospeak. And this, we think, is the view that most persons properly quali- fied to judge will take of the matter. Aside from the indications presented by the columns of the public journals, which register the condition of the country as surely as the thermometer does the condition of the at- mosphere, there are other gratifying signs thai notwithstanding the fact that dullness is com- plained of in regard to some particular interests, the general business of the country is steadily improving, and that the season now beginning will be a busy and rather prosperous one. Bot, on the other hand, it is not to be denied that business men are beginning to understand better the advantages of newspaper publicity, | and to more generally reap its many and cer. tain benefits. And not only the class popularly denominated business men, but the public at Jarge are learning and profiting by the facili- ues afforded by small advertisements in a | ‘widely circulated newspaper for securing cus- tomers, effecting sal ying wants, and im fact tor transacting uo the ordinary Business of life. By adopting this course they Save both time and mouey; for,as bayer and seller are thus brong! into direct communica- tion, there is no longer a necessity for paying heavy profits to middle dealers or commissions to agents and brokers. That business 15 as- suming & new phase in this respect, so far as our own city is concerned, the columns of the STakR bear ample testimony,—as do those of the Sun for Baltimore. the Ledzer for Philadelphia, and the Herald for *“»w York. The number of short business advertisements published in | this paper each day has never been so large as now: and, by reason of ils greatly increased and still growing cirenlation, it yields a much larger return to advertisers now than it ever | did before, thongh their augmented bu and improved circumstences fully attest that they have never had ground for complaint on this score. ‘That we are gratified with this state of affairs ‘we cheerfully admit, but it is also a matter for wider congratulation: for no better index o business condition of a city can be had than columns of its newspapers. That the Sran— which is peculiarly the organ of the people— should be prosperous, is therefore pre elusive evidence that the general business of Washington and adjacent cities is in a heal and flourishing c ness ny t it so, reader? Seine eee Tuz Workixe Pxoriz—The workmen at the New York Central railroad workshops at ‘West Albany struck on Saturday for increased ‘wages. An order was issued some weeks since by Vice President Torence, reducing the hours of labor from ten to eight hours, and ‘wages twenty per cent. On Friday an order ‘was issued fixing a days Iabor at ten hours, and increasing wages ten percent. The men unanimously refused to go to work, and de- manded an increase of twenty percent. for eight hours’ work. They paraded the st on Saturday, about five hundred strong, made no violent demoustrations. bu Despatches | have been received from Syracuse and other | shops along the road, expressing sympathy ‘with the men, and ayowing a determination to | foliow their example, as the order applics to | the Hudson railroad. Also, a delegation from the workmen at East Albany came over on Saturday to express their sympathy. It is be- heved that the strike will be general. A Rhode Island newspaper reports that the «trike among the spinners at Woonsocket, in that s continues, and adds that last week a no spinners from Philadelphia arrived there, ex- | pecting to go to work, but they were inet by the old bands, persuaded not to do so, and re- | turned om the next train.
