The Republican papers this morning natu- rally indulge to a considerable extent in long primer type in announcing the result of the New Hampshire election. The election has | deem regarded with unusual interest by both | Parties as affording an indication of the drift of | public sentiment; and also as supplying material jor party encouragement in the contest | in other States. New Hampshire has but three members of the House ot the Representatives and five votes in the electoral college; hence the anxiety manifested by the two great parties Fespectively to carry the State seemed dis- Proportionate to the political importance of the result, and was only explainable, as above stated by the fact of its serving as a distinct and positive indication of the current of the popular judgment upon the great questions now before the country, and which are to be settled at the | coming Presidenttal election. In ten out of the last eleven years the Repub- | licams have carried New Hampshire by an average majority of 3,359, and in the only year | when they were beaten, 1563, they lost the State by running two candidates The returns re- ceived from the election yesterday indicate that the Repablicans have carried the State by very nearly their usual majority. The result will undoubt diy serve not only to give great o: coursgement to that party in the coming Pres- idential contest, but strengthens the impeach- ers vastly, being held as a verdict upon that aseue. The result will also doubtless have con- siderable effect upon the Connecticut election, | which eccurs on the first Monday in April, ea. couraging the Republicans to herculean efforts wo carry that State, and serving to dampen to some extent the hopefulness and zeal of the Democratic party in that contest. THE PUBLIC AND THE TRIAL. We have no doubt the disposition of the seats im the Senate galleries during the impeachment rial bas been a vexatious question with the | T honorsble Senators, and we are satisfied they | have adopted that plan which seemed to them best euder all the cir: ustances In the con- clasions they have reached—if we rightly com- prebend the effect of the substitute offered by Mr. Howard—we are, however, not able to concur | It can hardly be denied by any one, we pre- | sugne that the great public have as deep an interest in the questions at issue as the favored few who may be able to obtain tickets, or the officials named, or even the Senators them- selves, and, to look 4 little deeper than the sur- face, the humblest in the land have an equal right with them to hear and see the proceedings It seems to us, therefore, tnat, except reporters’ and diplomats’ sections, the galleries should haye been left free to all comers,—the only condition being good behavior and the ad- mission of no more than could from time to time be properly seated. If, however, this course could not be carried out, certainly one or two sections might be left open to the pub- lic with good results. Many intelligent and well-behaved persons, who are greatly inter- ested im the subject, have no acquaintance ‘with persons having tickets to distribute, or do Bot care to beg for favors of this sort. But ander the pian adopted they must stand aside for others more favored in having “a friend at court,” or whose composition contains more of the offensive quality vulgarly called + brass,” | but who are in no other respect any better, if so | i Well, entitled to seats. Again, we are apprehensive that the ticket system cannot be kept free from apparently well founded complaint: of favoritism and trickery, when put in operation. Nor yet will it be found. as some of the honorable gentlemen seemed te think it would, a sure guaranty for good order and proper behavior in the galle- Ties. The fact that certain persons are able to Procure tickets is no e+rtificate of good charac- ter. The “Hogg” family, which has made it- self so obpoxious at places of amusement and other public assemblages in New York and elsewhere for a few seasons past, is pretty | iargely represented here now, tricked ont in the Inte=t yles. They will be among the earliest and most persistent eants for places: and there is great danger that they will be amongst the most successful. So deceptive appearances now-a-days that even Senators may be occasionally imposed upon. The betver way, therefore, will be for them to run uo risk in this respect by conciud- ang to treat everybody alike. «First come first served,” is a gued r of action touching the people in » Republic and costliest Is Cosst MP TION Contactor lef has generally been om the side of the con- tagiousness ef pulmonary consumption. In southern Europe, itis a part of sanitary I-gis- lation to destroy the clothes and bedding of those who have died of this disease Until re- cently, the opinion of medical men have leaned to the other side. Experiments and observa- tions now being made in Europe seem to show that tubercle introduced by inoculation into the body of a healthy animal will give rise to tu- berculosis, or the formation and deposit of the | lke matter in the tissues and organs. Dr. Ger- bard terminates his paper on the treatment of continued fevers by some remarks on the tran. mission of pulmonary consumption from one per-on toanvther, when sleeping im the same bed. He says: “I should set down the proba- bility of consumption occurring to per- sons thus exposed to contagion, as husband and wife. two sisters or two brothers, sleeping together in close rooms, to be at least three-fold gteaver than ordinary. it they be long exposed mbale the exnalations from one patient to another.” As regards the prognosis of con- sumption, or the judging the period of its duration, Dr. Gerhard speaks very properly of the difficulty of making it, and cautions against (elling patients that they have con- sumption. which is interpreted by them to be a decree of death. “This popular belief is of course an absurdity, for a person may hve while laboring under tubercular disease, near- ly or even quite as long as if he were not af- fected with it.” We are not to understand by this that as a general thing a consumptive pa- tient will live long, but only that consumption is not always a fatal disease, nor oue that in- variably shortens life, New Peniicationa—From French & Rich- ardson we have copies of the well-printed cheap editions of “David Copperfield” and “Ivanhoe,” published by D.
