Demockatic Cavcts.—Tne leading Demo- cratic politicians present in the city held a secret caucus at the Metropolitan Hotel yes- terday, to decide upon the most available man to be selected as their candidate in the co: ing Presidential contest. Several hours were spent in discussing the merits and claims of George H. Pendleton, Horatio Seymour, Gen- | @ral Sherman, and others. It was general- ly admitted that the candidate must be a miltary man, with s fair war record. The eboice finally fell upon Gen. James B. Stead- man, of Obio. John Quincy Adams, of Mas- sachusetts, was settled upon as the most avail- able man for the Vice Presidency. 1m answer to some inquiries respecting General Grant, it was stated that he had been ded, and it ‘Was ascertained that under no cireumstances would he be the Democratic c: lidate for the Presidemcy.
