The address of Prof. Silas L. Loomis,M D, TELEGRAMS TO THE STAR. RerogtsD Fariv OF THE “TUCKER Manuracturine Cowrany.—it was car- rently reported throughout the city yesterday afternoon that the ‘Tucker Manufacturing Company,” of Boston, had been forced to sus- pend operations om account of fimancial diff- culties. It is also stated that Mr. Thomas J. Fisher, a tormer well-known citizen of Wash- ington, and one of the members of this firm, is & beavy loser by the suspension, being in- volved in the sum of $150,000. Mrs. E. 0. Dyer, the widow of the late Edward U. Dyer, of this city, 18 alsc reported a heavy loser by this failure. The Tucker company bad already obtained considerable celebrity from the exceilent maa- ner in which they bave been manufacturin light iron-work in the shape of gas cuand liers, bedstead, fancy ornaments, and articles of Bonsehold furniture. it is further stated the is by the ac- tions of the treasurer of the company. far true th with the Washington losers, as Mr. Fisher. during bis residence in our midst, had con- tracted many friends. who sincerely regret this Announcement.—Intelligencer. Rumors of the sort above referred to have been afloat in this city for some days, but we have refrained from noticing them until tt could be secertained that the difficulties of the company were as serious as stated. From the fact that the company is yet shipping goods daily to thts city, it is hoped that the company ie notso much crippled as to force it to sus- Pend operations. We should especially re- gret to see this enterprise fall through with Joss to the many energetic and estimable citi- zens of Washinggon who have put their money into it, as it presen’s a serious discouragement to all public-epirited movements of the kind, a offers an opportunity for thecroakers, who eep their bands eo resolutely in their pockets, to say “I told you so ‘We learn that no blame attaches toany of the Washingionians or ex-Washingtonians above referred to, for the difficulties in which the Company is in volved, and the fault seems to be with parties in Marsachusetts. How To Make Dry CeLvars.—Where the soil is flat and heavy or holds water like a sponge, there is difficulty in making water- tcellars. The proper cvurse 1s said to be to constructa large square cistern, and to erect the house over i. Round cisterns will bear great pressure from the outside; large square ones will not, unless securely walled. Besides it tbe floors are very large, and water has ac- cess under ‘hem, the pressure might lift the floors of the cellars in spots. This is obviated by tagging with fiat stones or laying a course of bricks or of planks upon the front layer of cement. Partition walls of stone or brick will not only secure both the outer or foundation walls andthe floor, but addgreatly to the coolness of the cellar. These walls should be carried up at the same time that the foundation walls are laid and bedded, bu, carried up m cement. One-third good ny- draulic lime (or cement) and two-thirds sharp, clean e3nd, make a good cement mortar.
