THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Cirewlation im the Distriet. NOYES.. «« Editor. CROSBY 8S. WASHINGTON CITY: i EPNESDAY....NOVEMBER 13, 1867. READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- @RAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. Look OUT FOR THE Sa00TING STARs.—If the bight be clear it is probable that there wiil be s recurrence this evening, (Nov. i3th,) or to-morrow night, of the interesting meteorolo- gical phenomena which excited so much at- tention at this time Iast year im Europe. It wes not seem in the United States, be. csuse this point of the earth was not then turned towards the poiat of the Heavens from which (he meteors appeared to emanate. It is thought. Bowever, that we shall be more favorably situated for witnessing asimilar dispisy this evening, probably less Imposing which was observed Iast November. ‘The esr‘ im its annual motion around the sun every year in November crosses the orbit of a gToup of meteors. which form, as it were, a Kind of comet. Once in about 33 years the earth and the comet meet at the point of inter- | bits, and the former pass- ing directly through the nucleus of the latter Produces the meteoric shower. In the follo: ing November, when the earth has again ar. Tived at the same point of its orbit, the come! baving moved in the meantime, the former, perbaps, encounters the tail of the latter and thus gives rise to a second bat smaller display, ene THE VOLORED ScHOOL Fryp.—In our report of the proceedings of the Cireuit Court for this district, Chief Justice Cartrer, yesterday, Mention was made of the fact that judgment had been rendered against the Corporation of Washington tn favor of the trastees of colored schools for & pottion of the schoo! fand of 1555 amounting to $7,°S9.(3. This decision was based op the statement of Walter S. Cox, Esq, aud- sfer, to Whom the case was referred at the Iast term, 8nd who yesterday reported that he had “ascertained that the amount applicable to Public schools m the city of Washington for the year ending June 20, 1565, was the amount of $79,=44 33. The proportion of this sum payable to the trustees of the colored schools under the decision of the court is one itth, Or $15,975.66. The amount actually paid Was $7,69.3, leaving still due 9.13. it will be seen that this decision sustains the porition beld by the Mayor, and by the Commuttee on Schools in the Board of Alder- men, ard to be hoped row that a settle- mentof the vexed question will be arrived at = tbe City Councils, and the school bills Promptly passed. The CExsr. T. Hovgh, of the Bureau of Fducation, is to-day at Police headquarters Tecelvir g the returns of the policemen who, for day Cr two past, Dave been engxged in taking s sas of the District. Full returns from istricts Rave already been received, ne buncred ane fitty are yet tocome expreted that before the close of the be whole will have been received. It will probably be three or four weeks before the statements can be com- piled Way Not!—It it be true, as claimed by General Butler and Mr. Thaddeus Stevens, ‘hat the Five-twenties can iawfally be paid im “greenbacks.” why may they not as law. tully be paid im national bank notes! The Wid seetion of the Currency Act declares that Such notes “sball be received at par in ail parts of the Uxited States in payment of taxes, excises, public lands, and all other dues to the Unied States, except for duties on imports: Snd also for sil salsries and other debts and demands owing by the United Ststes to indi- viduals, corporations, and associations within the United Stares, except interest on the pubtic Gebt and redemption of the ational currency.” it will thes be seen that the office of the na vonal bank note is by law made the same as that of the “greenbacks,” and if the Five- twenties may lawfully be redeemed with the ue, WY May they not be with the other!
