One of the contests was to ave been between two robust colored candi- dates for pugilistic tame—Tem Sorrell and Tom Bowic—and the other between Charles McLaughlin and Horatio Bolster. Both matches were made about six weeks since, in this city, and in sporting circles here and elsewhere they have been trequently dis- cussed. Immediateiy after the arrangements were made for a meeting, all the parties weat into training. Tom Serre! One of the colored men is Tom Sorrell, @ yellow fellow who cli 8 both this city (where he bas a wife) and Baltimore as his bome, dividing his time between the two cities. He is between 26 and 27 years old, about 5 feet 9 inches in beight; weighed. when he went in- to training, 153, He is quite active protesses to bea colored “sport,” although he wes tormerly an attendant in restaurants. He is well-Enown to the police of this cicy, and is looked upon as a desperate fellow, but some how or another he bas siwaye escaped pun- ishment. He was backed by Jobn O'Brien, and was trained in Virginia, near the end of the Long Bridge, by Mike arr. Tom Bowie. Tom Bowie is weli known in this city, hay- ing been raised in the upper part of the Fourth Ward. He isa finely formed man, almost jet Diack, about 25 years old, 5 feet 10 or il inches, ‘weighed when be went into training 151}, and although he bas not the reputation of being in y way “exira” asa disciple ef the manly art, he is said to be @ man of much endarance. He also is well known to our police: but with- im @ year or tw» he has been remarkably or- deriy, and has given the offers of the law no trouble. His backer was Johnny Clarke, and he was trained near Bladensburg by Charley Nu- gent. Charles McLaughlin. Onbarles McLaughlin wa tall, spare you; man of about 22 years of age, 5 feet 11 faches in height, and weighed, when he went into train- ing. about 145 pounds. He is a native of New York city, 18 am engineer by trade, and was formerly im the army, but of late years has been atiending a bar in the Second Ward. He is of quite preposeessing appearance, having a fair complexion, bine eyes, and dark brown, hair, and possessing a phiz seemingly entirely outof place im the prize ring. Horatio Bolster. Horatio Bolster, better known as “ Rashe Boleter,” is better Known here than either of the others, having several times appeared in the prize ring. He ts a n: ais by trade @ bation about five fret seven inches, aud weigned be- fore he went into traiving about one hundred and sty pounds. He is of rather dark com. Plexion. His first fight in the ring was with Sem Collyer in 1:66, by whom be was defeated in forty-nme rounds; his tecond with Mike English, by whom he was defvated in sixteen rounds, (both on the Potomac;) and the last in Connecticut, a few moaths since im which he was victor over & young Englishman by a “foul.” The Start and Arriv the Ground. Last night and this morning the {ower por- tion of the Second Ward was quite lively, as also several places on the avenue, and O’Brien’s restaurant, on 4% street, Island, many young men being about, making prep- arations to leave. As daybreak approached, carriages and omnibus:es were seen making towards Rooney’s Ram's Head, 13th and O streets, sround which quite a crowd gathered snd the same was the case about O'Brie: cottage. The corner of 6th street and Penn- — avenue seemed to have also been chosen a8 a gathering place, and Macee's bowhmng saloon, E street. was also one of the starting pointe. The crowds around these places were pretty orderly, although one or two amicable spar- Ting matches took place. About six ociock Ube start took place, auc soon there were about @ thousand persons going towards the place designated—Fort Albany, about 1 miles srom the Leng Bridge. The headquarters of the crowd was made at a little frame tavern kept by Major Burns, formerly of the 24 New York artillery, known as the+*Rural House.” about 200 yards north of the fort. The bar of the es. tablsbment. we need hardly say, was abund- antly patronized. After waiting some time, the rumor got out that there would be no fight, and much feeling was evinced. It was stated that Eowle had been at the house the night before, but subse- quently some of his friends went over and persuaded him to back down, alleging that he ad not had training enough; that he had been druggec, and that there was 2 combination to have him best anyhow. It was stated that he bad gone away, but Reddy Welsh asserred that be would be on band in time, and «they should not holler before they were out of the woods.” Some of the rougher portion of the crowd thinking they had been <‘sold,” attempt. ed to get apjsome kind of excitement Jim Kelly seemed to be “spiling” fora tight, but eaid be had no backers, and would fight Jobn Charles. of the « Cli for the money, And the’ parties started ig, b ¥ und, and by Ting, but the crowd gathered aro’ some means this fatle: A _ between Tip Hoyt and “Mi well joWD In the Second Ward, io which the latter got his bugie smashed, and emerged from that it was too “jamm; it. low: legged soldier an as he could carry. Mike exclaimed, “Money belongs to Tom Sorrell, Bowie has not come to time, rnd the outside bets are off.” At the ring the crowd seemed to spoil for a fight, and desperate efforts were made to get one, and Sower, or Sacar,a tall marine in th rem, insisted om one, and pitched Jobn aries, and for it by stripping “bimselt to the baff.” His friends got around ind msistéd that be should not fight because be was too drunk to which the irends of the other max replied, «Qnaries is d—q sight druoker than your man; let him fight.” Sowers’ friends. however, took bim of the ring, and then he could not find his irt, and making @ break from ¢! a over the ropes and tackled on toa man, from whom be was taken, and some parties in= tbat he should ‘was persuaded to putiton. The Descent of the Military. Atthis junction a number of soldiers were seen advancing towards the fort in the rear, and the cry was raised, +There’s the soldiers!’ “ Police!” “Police!” when there wasagea- eral stampede, the crowd inside the fort jos'ling their way over the bridge leadinz from the for’, or tumbling pell-mell down the sidts of tbe parapet mto the muddy ditch in their haste to set out of the way of arre-t. Some of our fat. plethoric citizens, who baven’t stepped faster than a walk for yeirs, made the most superhaman exertions to scram- ble out of reach of the bayonets, A few of the toremost of the crowd managed to escape, but almost the entire party were captured. Desperate attempts were made to break through the line by several of the pris- oners, but the soldiers, with fixed bayouets and pistols, drove them back, admonishieg them that they would ran them througt or shoot them ff they attempted to run the guard. The military were from ry Rodgers, id consisted of 54 men of company F, ith ar- tillery, officered by Lieutenants Howe and Jones, who were accompanied by Sheriff Jas. W. Stewart, of Alexandria county, and one or two deputies. ‘The crowd was allowed to leave the fort, but the military formed around them and held them prisoners about the entrance. Some of the prisoners took the matter quite philosoph- ically, but others were very anxious two get out, and many were the excuses made to the eberiff, particularly by those who thought that the arrest would Jead to their names appear- ing in print. reporters managed to get through, One or two and almost immediately there was a demand jor paper and pencil by parties who wished to play reporters sor the sake of effecting their release. Some managed by this means to get off, among them Mr. Uhris, Lilly. The backmen were very anxious to get ‘ay, and in one or two instances their fares ped, but they were unable to get out to the vehicles, and we hear that one youngman who went over ia @ buggy came back in such aburry, running all the way, that he forgot the vebicle until he reached the city. Dorrell made his escape by taking off his shoes and playing the ramaway, and reached the city in the tail end of a wagon. Sheriff Stewart paroted a number to appear at bis office during the day, and the military fermed about the remainder, about 150, and about 9¥ o'clock they were on their way to Alexendria : While the military were guarding the men some of the crowd attempted to shove through Ine, and in the attempt one or two got sbarply pricked with the payonet. A bumber pulled up the stakes of the riog and formed in line, marched down to the ring, but with a threat or two from the military bane hd indvced to put them down. ¢ troops hed been lying in the woods, near Fort Albany, since daylight, waiting for tw Proper moment to make the charge. The seiz- ure was made by order of Maj. Gen. Schofield, im command of the Ist Military District, (State of Virginie,) who has declared that no more prize fights will be permitted within his jaris- Ciction. The Prisoners at Alexandria. On the road to Alexandria the prisoners ‘were tolerably lively, moet of them seeming determined to keep up their spirits, and as they entered the town, about 1! o'clock, they were met on the outskirts by nearly the en- tre population—men, women and children— ef that ancient burgh, and the illustriens prisoners found themeelves “the observed of all observers.” They were taken first to the office of Justice Burch, and were then escorted to jail. where Major James Stewart, commanding the post, Col. SP. Lee. of the Fredmen’s Bureau. and Justice Beach were in session. Mayor Latham was also pres. ent.
