The experiment was a successful one, very much to the surprise of a great many per- sons, who believed the attempt utterly im. practicable, as communication through this Passage bad been suspended over twenty years since. The impression has prevailed for @ number of years past that the water near the northern shore and west of the long bridge has become more shallow every year, and therejore this route has been abandoned, and the sbipping has made the circuit around the southern shore. Now, however, it ha> been Sscertgined that the reverse is the fact, and instead of there being & decrease of water, it has increased in depth—or, rather, a more perfect channel has formed. This is an im- | Portant discovery for our commerce, inasmuch SS vessels discharging cargoes at the Wasb- ington wharves can cut off between four and five miles to Georgetown by avoiding the ne- cessity of taking the southern channel. Steps will be soon taken to resurvey the water grounds. —————— FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE Srreev Ralit- ROAD—A Boy Killed.—This morning about 9 O'clock, a boy named Charles Green, bet ween 7 and = years of age,son of Mr. Thomas Green, a letter carrier, residing on C street, near First street west, was killed in New Jersey avenue by one of the cars of the Washington and Georgetown Railroad running over him. It =ppears from statements made by persons near by at the time, that the deceased with two other boys was playing on the car, which was braked up and had no horses attached, and by some means the brake was loosened and the car stired down the grade, when the boy Green fell off, and under the car, the wheels passing over bis head fracturing the skull and literally crushing out his brain. He was of course killed instantly. The body was im- mediately taken up—Sergeant Pierce and UMi- cer Brewer and others assisting—and Dr. Mupcer was called but could be of no service. There are other rumors 1m relation to he affair, one of which is that the boy was thrown off by the car running round the curve, and still Snotber that at the time he was attempting io geton the car.
