4 F THE EVENING STAR. AUCTION SALES. Trial of Jacob Van Arsdale tor the Mur- der of Jasper Baird at Somerville, N.J.— A Spiritual Murderer. The little towm of Somerville, N. J., has at last an excitement worthy of its ‘ancieat re- nown. A man ison trial for murder, supposed to have been caused by spiritual haliucination. The town contains about three thousand in- Babitants, and is located in Somerset county. Andrew QM. Baird, a well-to-do farmer, with his family, consisting of a wife, three sons, two daughters, @ little negro hired girl, and the accused Jacob Van Arsdale, resided at a subarb of Somerville, called Flagetown, fora long time past. Attached to the farm house is a shoemaker’s shop, as is the custom in this part of Jersey, where many of the farmers have blacksmiths’ and carpenters’ shops, in which work is done by persons hired the year round by the farmers. Ne«rly Ryearago Jacob Van Arsdale, a man well known in Somerville and vicinity for h violent and ungovernable burst of passio sought employment from Mr. baird in bis avo- cation as a shoemaker. He was hired on Thanksgiving Day, and up to the 29th of last Jun» did the work of the family, for which he was credited with board and his rent of the shoemaker’s shop, besides doing work ontside im the neighborhood. Twice during his resi- dence in Somerville had Van Arsdale “been known to give way to fils of passion, attacking Bis father and brother-in-law, choking the author of his being Ina savage manner until he wes released by bis neighbor. Gloomy and dcspondent by Dature, he was subject to spiritual delusions, and gave way at times to irregular spasms of moodines? and reti.ence. On the evening of the? :hof June. 1507, Van Arsdate, who wes deaf, had taken tea’ with the femily. of which be was treated as a mem- ber, aud retired to Dis bedroom at an early hour. In the same bedroom, but in a different bed slept Abrom Baird, aged 21 years, and Jase per Bard, bis younger brother, the fivorite child of the family, aged 12 years. Nothing upsual hsppesed during the night, and between tive aud six o'clock the’ next morning the family were awakened and proceeded to breaktast as usnal. Van Arsdale and the boy Jasper were absent trom brealtest, and the lille colored girl was sitting in Van Arsdale seat at the table, when Jasper was sent after Van Arsdale to tell him to come to breakfast. The accused came in as Mrs. Baird was pouring out coffee for kim, and going up to Mrs. Baird, he snapped his fingers atrbat lady and said to her, “Now yon have got it,” and went up stairs. Ina few minutes atter the boy Jasper was discovered lying in the shoemaker’s shop, batbed In a pool of blood. bis bead crushed in by Alap-stone pammer used by the eccused In his business, and two siabs im bis neck, severing the carotid ariery. Van Arsdale was discovered walking rapidiy towards the public road, in an excited man- ner. nd was seized at Roycefield and arrest-a and brought back to jail by Sheriff Browkav, of Somerset county. Mr. Waiter Cammanp, teller of the Somerset Bank. on finding the body of the boy Jasper, opened his clothing and fourd lite extinc:, but the body was still worra, end the pulsations over. The murdered boy was a pleasant, bindsome child, and a general invori‘e, particularly with the accu-ed, for whom he was always reidy 9 go of errands and oblige in a cheerful irank way. H. M. Gaston and Attorney-General Rote- son appeared for the Niate of New Jersey, and Chancellor Ben. Williamson and John D. Bar'ine for the defendant. Tne legal talent on both sides is very abie, and a brillant forensic display may be expecied from Williamson, ‘Who is ssid to be the O'Covor of New Jersey. Bar'ine opened for the defense, and did nota... tem >t to disprove the charge of the killing of the boy, but in the defenee souzht to prove that the rcea.ed wes jaboring under a halla- einsuien or temporary aberration, which 1e1- dered him upfic for the time being to judge of the enormity of his crime. . John V. Hall, the brother-in-law of thepris- ener. and bis wife testified that the prisoner bad been injured on the head when a boy, and ‘was subject 10 sick headache and gloomy spelis of despondency. 1t is alco believed that the accused was in communion with the raié- eal spiritualisis, having *s an intimate rriend the celebrated Mrs. Jacksoa, the well-known spirit medium. a told, showy woman, who is here, end will ‘esii.y for the defeise, hoping to prove that the ac cated did the murder while Acting under inspiration. The prisoner's po- Ltical affiliations were o7 the strongest radical type, snd bis sympathizers do not pelleve in his guilt. Public opinion, however, is agarust Nan Arsdale, and the telief is that he will be conv ———— Poisoning Case in Comecticut Reported. iFrom the Bridgeport Standard, Oct. 21] An exsmination wa> hed im Greenw: it week of Hugh Murray and Peter McDonnel ebererd Witton atismpt to poivon William ‘Wallace. by means of mixipgUroton oilin his coff-e.
