ae - THE EVENING STAR. i an mple Morrica te Thursday evening, iy a > late hour, John Streeter, Esq., George Mann, Esq., Miss Mann and Miss Prichard. of Hudson, 18., arrived im the city, and registered their names at the International Hovel. The several indiyidaais desired separate rooms, thongh all belonged ‘o the party, and it did not seem unreasonabie shat the two ladies should occupy one room while the two gentlemen occupied another. nm account of the crowded state af the hotel, it was found impossible to give each a sepa- rate room, and they were so informed. They hen retired to the ladies’ parlor and heid a council of W&r on the subject of the manner in which they were to beaccomodated. After a shor: time Mr. George Mann sought an inter- view with (be proprietor of the hotel, and said he thought the matter covld be satisfactorily arranged ift he proper officials could be pro- ‘What officials do you > require, my dear sir?” was the polite but peremptory request of tne host Mann replied that either aclergyman e ofthe peace would answer. No id "hap done! A justice of the peace uummoned, and in about three minutes od Miss Mann were one fleshy acc the statute in such cases made and Col. Jobnson.of the Internanonal, and Major Dyke, of Fairbanit, were witnesses, Mr. Geo. Mann giving away the bride. The little cere- mony costing “ue hotel nothing, and only in- volving the parties in the expense of the fee to the justice and the revenne stamps on the mar- ringe certificate, saved to the hotel ane roo which was soon after let to ane! Tly gentle. msn from up the country, at the rate of Ja disy.—St, Paul Pioneer, Oct. 13th. Dexter and Meuntain Bey. As much has recently been said about the relative speed of the famons horses Dexterand Mountain Boy, the facts which led to tne re- cent discussion may prove interesting. The controversy of the owners of the horses is not attractive toreaders, whose only interest is felt in learning which ts tbe superior horse. Dexter's epeed is known, and he needs no praise. Mountain Boy, is comparatively new to the turf, is known 't but by a few, but his exhibitions in private have been so wonderfal that persons who do know bim believe he is Dexter’s equal. It was this firm conviction that recently led to the suggestion of a trial between the horses. We are informed that a short time ago, while many gentlemen were actively engaged in col- lecting money for sufferers by the epidemic at New Orleans, Judge Requier and Messrs. A. D. Rietf and S. D. Marks called upon Mr. Bon- ner and asked him to allow Dexter to trot against Mountain Boy, at Jerome Park, for the benefit of the fund for yellow fever sufferers. At is said that Mr. Bonner had consented io this arrangement, and the cemmittee had gained the assent of Commodore Vanderbilt to trot Mountain Boy against Dexter, the receipts to go to the charity named by Mr. Bonner; and the committee were trying to <ecure the use of Jerome Park, when word was telegraphed from New Orleans that no more money was beeded. This telegram stopped the proposed race, quch to the regret ef many persons. —V. Y- 3. ee INSURANCE. National Capital Insurance Company. HOME OFFICE. 500 NINTH .
