THE EVENING STAR, | The Largest Circulation in the Distriet. | — ____ WwW. D. WALLACH, Editer and Prepricter. WASHINGTON OITY: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1867, SJ READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. SKE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTEB. THE GRANT AND THOMAS CORRES DN. DEwae ORRESPON Major General George H. Thomas has made 8 report to General Grant of ali the facts in relation to the municipal election of the city of Nashville. It is dated Sept. goth. The report contains all the official eommunt. cations which were exchanged upon th ject; the proclamations, respectivel: Governor of Temnessee and the Mayor of Nachville, and also the orders for sending troops to that city, and mat of General Grant directing Major General Thomas to go thither, «to remain until after theelection, to preserve | peace.” Major General Thomas specifically details to Gen. Grant bis conduct and mov Ments in the premises, And, with a view toa proper performance of duty, asks for instruc- | ions. These are given in telegrams, to the effect:—\I neither instruct to sustain the Governor nor Mayor, but to prevent con- flict. The Governor is ‘the only au- thority that can legally demand the aid of United States troops, and that must be by proc- lamation declaring invasion or insurrection existe beyond the control of other means at his bands. It is hoped your presence and good | judgment and advice will prevent conflict. Your mission is to preserve the peace, and not to take sides in political differences until called out in accordance with the law. You | are to prevent mobs from aiding either party. Af called upon legally to interfere your duty | is plain. You are not to prevent the lega State force from the execution of its orders. Such is the substance of the orders to Major | if Gereral Thomas. Fostumaieiz, no occasion occurred for the | employment of the United States troops, and | Major General Thomas, on the 2th of Sep. | tember, telegraphed to General Grant:—‘ The | election is over. All quiet.” THE PROPOSED ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN HERE We stated lately that Mr. S.T. Sait, a public spirited citizen of Maryland, had brought with | 3! him from Europe a large collection of curi- osities. of aceli tion, in this city. By the following extract from a letter received by Mr. Suit from | & promiment citizen of Paris, it will be seen | that Dir. S. is likely to receive very important aid from the other side of the water in carrying | out an object calenlated to add so much to the | attractiveness of the National Metropolis: Pakis, Oct. 10th, 186 avgtne Dear Sir:-—Since my last of the Ist inst. 1 received several letters from Mr. Geoffry St. Hilaire, the son of the celebrated FrencB Naturalist, and actually the Director ef the Garden of Acclimation an Bois de Boujogue. Thad also an interview with im at bis private bouse, daring which we spoke at length of the exchange of animals and of the scheme of the establishment of a garden of ac- ¢limation in Washington. On there two points 1 found him extremely isposed. 1 not only found him ready to pge the animal: necessary information and assistance in hi for the formation of a zoological garden men, if youdesire them for that purpose The Paris garden, although not yet six years old, is domg admirably well, and what, in an | economical and national point of view 1s still | of greater imporiance, ithas been instrumental in naturalizing im France several kinds of | sheep ard fowls, whose wool and feathers are uerd in industry and trade. In fact, it has opened new branches of business for the country. and will eventually do a great deal more in that way. As such an establishment wonld be of im- menee benefit to the United States, you will | bave no trouble, I think, ty find all the co- | cperation you need, both from the Gov- | ernment snd irom individuals, for such An enterprise. On the proposition of sev- eral gentlemen who raised a capital of one millien of francs for the par of ac- climating foreign animals in France, the | French Government gave them that | portion of the Bois de Boulogne you have vis- ited. Since tat every large city in France | bas followed the example, and bas its garden | of acclimation. At the same time the taste for ornamental birds and animals has taken an | immenge extension, and every one who has a | garden would think it incomplete without them. Also, all the gardens of acclimation in France are doing a splendid business. Plesse inform me so soon as you are ready to send me animals, so that | may inform Mr. Edwards and Mr. St. Hilaire of the fact. You | might, 1 ‘bink, commence by two invol one, composed of beavers of Uuapiti, for Mr. | Milzes Edwards, (Jardin des Plantes. Paris,) and the other addressed to Mr. Geotfrey St Hilaire, Jardin d’acclimation, do. In the second invoice you mightinelude coons, opos: *uIDS, Mins, beavers, moeking bir: 3, every auimal in fact, except the commonsquir- | Tel, which we baye. The two kinds of animals and birds Mr. Hilaire would prefer are those of the Sout States ard those on the range ct the Rocky Mountsins and on the Pacific slope. Virginia, South Uar- | olipa, Florida and Louisiana animals and birds are also sought for at the garden of accii- wauon of Paris. The animals and birds of Northeast we have.
