MURDER AND INSANITY. An Interesting Case in England, The Loudon News remarus tha: «ithe trial of a Frenchinan named Louis Bordier,in Lon don, for the murder of a woman, bas renewe: x very old controversy between two learned profertions. The legs] and medical view of ansapity are & open variance. The crime was premeditated; it was not dictated by malic« or passion, in the ordinary sense of the terms, nor does it seem to have been followed by any sense of repentance, or the slightest prickings of conscience. Bordier had suffered long un- der a depressing physical disease; he had un- dergone @ painful surgical operation; be seems ro bave been involved in pecuniary distress, and to have lad only darkened prospects be- He resolved to destroy himself. and om jealousy, and partly from appre. on of the misery which might befall nis paramour ua children after his death, he de- iermined 10 destroy them also. ss] bave taken the resolution,’ ke wrote to his brother, less than two days before the mur- der, ‘of ‘aking away my lite as well as that of the woman with who I have lived for thirteen ye: is also those of my children. * + * Jt is with the greatest regret that 1 am abont to commit this crime, if at all events 1 have gth to carry me on to the end, for I havea daughter close on to twelve years of age, another nine, and the last nineteen months At avy rate | shall try to accomplish tt, and if rhere 18 & God, as many of those Jesuits who live by the sweat of us workmen wish to make us believe, l would haye permission, | bslieve, ro bave an interview with Him, in spiteof my not having confessed myself to them, and that be will pardon me the sin lam going to com- mit, if at any rate it can be so called, to save myself, as well as my family from misery.” “On the morning of the 3d of September ha waited till his wite was asleep, kissed her, Shook ber hand, and then cut ber throat. As the dying woman started up, he prevented her entering the room her children slept in. Pass- ing in Bimself, he placed his band on the head ofthe eldest child, and told her to lie still, One band (we quote hereyidence) was behind him, end she saw the bandle of something in it. Atter holding her head about a minute he left the room.’ The sight of blood—he does not seem to haye pictured it to himself in the images which must have been before him during the fortnight in which he contemplated his crime—appears to have disabled him from self-destruction. ‘It stood up,’ he said, like a fore Di ‘pillar or barrier between’ his throat and the | razor. In the presence of the surgeon, who ‘was at once summoned to the bedside of the murdered woman, he confessed what he had done, Kissing the dead body of his wife, and one of bis children who was brought to Lim. “He narrated the manner of the deed, in the chamber in which it was perpetrated, coolly smoking the while. He jnstifled the murder. It was a necessity, he said. and a duty. He made no pretenee that he acted under any ir- resistable impulse overpowering his will. He seems to have deliberately judged that the destruction of his wife. his children and him. self was, under the circumstances, the most expedient course to take. Skeptical aboutjthe existence of God and the future world, vi=w- ing religion as an invention of the Jesuits who trade on the weakness of men and plunder the poor, seeing nothing before or behind him bat misery, and actuated by a sort of selfish aff=c- tion which could not dear the idea of separa- uicn from his wife and children, he deliberately Tesolved on the series of crimes which he partially perpetrated. That the determination ‘was mischievonsly false inference trom per- verse assumptions does not render it insane in Any other rense than tha’ in which all moral and intellectual obliquity is insane. +Bordier’s desire that his mother might not be disturbed by hearing of his crime, and his intention to kill bis daughters that they might not be reproached as the children of a mur- derer. shows tbat he was deliberately viola- ting what he knew to be the law of the land and the judgment of society. He was acting under the influence of a benighted judgment. But there is not the slightest reason to think that he was the victim of any hallucination. or that the will was in abeyance. It was simply misdirected by false theories. He was satis- fied with what he nad done, thinking as he did about the fuiure. Bur he knew that society snd the law condemned and punished as wrong what he had corrupted himself into thinking right; and in yiolating their injanc- tions be justly incurred the penalties t2-> 7 sign. tis the object of laws to prevent every man from doing any and every wickeduess which 4 false view of lite may make right in his eyes. He who sets them and the common cony ctions and feelings of human nature at paugbt, courts the punishment of wtich they have forewarred them Coat Mings.—The richest coal deposits are wwell Known ‘0 exist in the valleys of the Schuylkill ard Lehigh rivers.
