LOCAL NEWS, THIS MORNING—MAXIMILLIAN HSMAKCK—NINETEEN ROUNDS UN IVE MINUTES—BISMARCK THE VIC- ‘This morning, at an early hour, about fifty persons, black and white, assembled on the White Lot, between the President's House avd Wasbington Monument, to witness a pro fight between two coiored pugilists, Known Cocke alias “Maximitiian,” and Fletcher ait Burley alias “Bismarck,” Jim Peake, colore was Max's second, and Rill Sorrell, colored, (brother of Tom Sorrell, whois to fight Bowie.) seconded Bismarck. The referee was W. S. alas Horseshoe Bennett. After the usual preliminaries the fight com- Menced, and at an early st.ge Bismarck got in his first blow. and soon afterwards drew first blood. The fight proceeded with varying for- tune, Maximilian generally getting the worst of it uncl the 19tb round, when he was knocked out of Lime, and the referee declared Bismarck the victor. The fight lasted 45 minutes, It was « regular “slogging match,” and Maxi- milan was badly bruised about the ribs. While the mill was progressing, the seconds £0i inlo a dispute, and from words proceeded to blows, and soom there were two fights in progress. The mother of the young gentleman had several times spoken against the match, declaring that ber son was y too young to marry: therefore it was & secret from her. ‘Tuesday evening tended bride and the bridesmaid ‘were soon arrayed for the bridal: orange bios- soms and white veils were adjusted, and ne jadie ed themselves in the parlor to aweit | the om and groomsman. The meeting was cailed to order by Mr. James Ryan, late District Can. ter, who nominated for chairman Gen. O'Neill, and he was elected. Upon taking the chair, Gen. The great object of the Fenian organ- ization was to liberate Ireland. and he heped the day was not far distant when the presant (Queen of England would curse the law which drove Irishmen trom Irish soil. Irishmen had been driven from their home to free America, the very plac? where they could organize and prepare to march against the English flag Col. P. F. Walsh. central organizer of tbe Fenian Brotherhood, was then Introduced, and spoke of the efforts of Irishmen to cast off the English yoke of oppression and lift Lreland uptoher place asa iree nation. The present time wis the proper one to free Ireland, and no svch me had ever been presented to ac- complish ber independence. The experience which Irishmen bad in free America prepared them fo strike for their native land, and made them c _psble of creating a free Government there. Tiere were men in America whoever w ireland yet sympathized with her, and would help to make her free. There were men in English prisons now in felons’ garb, and their ouly crime was that they loved In as patriots. In concingion, Col. W. urged upon the Irichmen te organize and do all in their power to avsist Ireland. It was then announced that names wonld be taken to organize @ new circle. The apparatus was quickly at the Scene of this fire, Bligh’s stables, at the corner of 12th and C gtreets north, being joined bere by the steamer Henry Addison, of George. town, which made excellent time. This fire originated in the sheds east of Carroll Hi and north of the building owsed by Mr. C. T. Gardiner and occupied by Messrs. Crown & Co., asa coach factory, and there is but little doubt bat that it was the work of incendiaries. The shedding Was quickly de- stroyed and the fire communicated with the wintows of Carroll Hall, and also with the coach factory on the sonth, but by the prompt action of the firemen the flames were sdon ex- tinguished. The ruling prices are trom 50 cents to 1 per bushel. ——_ THE ARSENAL BUILDING IMpROGLIO.—Mr. Stockbridge. the contractor for tearing down the arsenal building for $7.00, appears to have abandoned his contract. as nothing is now being done there. The only work done at all bas been the tearing down of two inside wails, of no great dimensions. The attempt to waaxe an arrangement by which Mr. John R. Elvans should siand between the contractor and tbe colored men employed, as trustee for their payment, has failed. Mr. Stock- bridge's idea was to reserve Si.5)) for him- | self from the contract price, and then divide $6.00 amongst a joint stock company of fifty (49 colored persons and himself) who should do the work. Mr.Elvans objected, that Mr. Stockbridge, by this arrangement was getting too large a share of the price, and proposed that he should reserve #500 for incidental ex- penses, and divide 37,000 amongst the jomt stock company, including the contractor. This the latter declined to accede to,and Mr. El- vans dropped the matter. It has now been proposed (aside trom Mr. Stockbridge’s con- tract.) that the colored men of the city should undertake the work themselves; they having proposed to do the work for $1.5) per day and find themselye«. ies Caritor HILL PresnyTertaN CarRce.— Ground has been broken a: the corner of 4th and B streets south, for the new Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church, and in course of a few ‘weeks the corner-sione of the new edifice will be laid. The church is to be of brick, and will be a great ornament to the neighborhood which is rapidty improving, and will beaneat and substantial structure. the estimated cost of which fs $35,000. On Sunday last at the missionary meeting of the Sunaay School attached to the church. the pastor, Rev. Dr. Chester, brought forward a purse containing four dimes, four half-dimes, eighth cents, and some other coin which he stated was money raised by himselfand brother when boyr, (about 30) yesrs for the mis- sionary cause, and the house having been burnt down, this money was found in the ruins, It was proposed that this should be sold, and it was thereupon put up at auction, when a portion of it was sold for $15, some ‘of the pennies bringing a dollar each. This sum added to the usual collection, increased it to $43. —— PROTRACTED MEETING.—At the East Wash. ington Methodist Protestant Charch, in charge of Rey. J. W. Chariton, a spirited revival has been in progress for two weeks past, and quite & pumber of penitents are nightly at the altar, and a number of conversions, among them some of the first citizens of the East End have been reported. A very fine meeting has been commenced st the Island Baptist Charch, in charge of Rey. C. ©. Meador, which promises toresult in the addition of @ large number to the membershi;, aod the meetings are mij btly becoming more and more interesting. ee : TERMINATED FATALLY.—Yesterday after- Roon, the colored man Jacob Johnson, who was cne of the three caught under the em- barnkment in the morning on 16th street, above Rhode Isiand avenue, (an account of which was published in the Sran,) died from the ef- fects of bos injuries, making two victims of this accident, Hugh Adams, white, being killed outright at the time. This had the ef- fect of bringing him up, and Capt Grey took him in custody, but he begged so fervently, and made such earnest promises not to take any more laths, that the Captain allowed him to go. Capt. Grey is of the opinion that he will not be troubled again very soon, as this 18 the fitth person shot by him this summer waile in the act of stealing. The powder 1s éupposed to have caught from a spark from the anvil where Pool was at work. The explosion lifted the roof of the shop some six feet.
