THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation in the District w. nD. WaLLAcH, Editor and Pro letor. WASHINGTON OITY: SATURDAY.... OCTOBER 19, 1567. EF READING MATTER ON EVERY PAG SEEK OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TRLE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. SEWAGE AND DRAINAGE. ‘The question of proper sewage and drainage is Dow receiving great attention om che other side of the Atlantic, and not content with con- sidering merely the best way of getting rid of the refuse matter which accumalates in cities and towns, means are being taken to make it + source of wealth. The filth, which lett to evaporate in the open air fs a iruitial cause of disenseand death, and which emptied into rivers or canals poisons the waters, contains a sufficient quantity of fertilizing material to mage the waste lands in the neighborhood of many of our large cities as productive as the best cultivated and most richly manured | farms. The sewage which helps to fill up the ‘Washington Usnal might be made available to enrich enongh of the farm land ia Virginia near this city to supply our markets with garden produce. Experiments in Bugland have proved that, contrary to the theories of certain writers, the sewage contains abundance | of silicates for the raising of grain; and if, by the aid of chemistry, the ammoais, so invalu- able to agriculture, which is now lost in the | air, could be retsined, there would ba few better fertilizers than that whieh our sewers would yield. in England, the political economists who are urging a reform of the present system have been greatly encouraged, and che whole sub- ject ot town drainage is likely to be revoin- tionized, by a late legal decree which awarded damages for discharging the sewage matter of Leamington into the Leam, and sequestrated the municipal funds in satisfaction of the cisim. A similar decree in this country would necessitate such attention to the subject as it is not likely to receive at present, although it will pay, ina pecuniary sense alone, as proved by the resnits accomplished in England, where the great sewage system carried ont by the Metropolitan Board of Works in London, at a cost of £3,000,000. 18 to be furcher improved by applying the fertilizing material to eight thousand acres of barren, lands at Maplin. which it is proposed to render as productiveas | a garden; at the same time bringing the sewage | within reach of many thou-and acres of arable isnd. An experiment is now in progress at “Lodge Farm,’ comprising two hundred aeres. The London Siar says:—“The vow- age at present used is brought through 45-inch pipes to the farm from the pumping. tion. The pump is worked by an engine are complete, will be used for the general pur- poses of the farm. The pipes are carried un- | der the soil on the line of the future culverts, and discharge through a syphon into a tank on the boundary of the farm. In this tank are regulating chambers, and the height over the soil is sufficient to secure arapid and thorough irrigation, which is effected through moveable shoots as well as through the field «carriers. ‘The tarm is devoted to the raising of grass and gTeen crops principally, but experiments have been made in white crops and garden vege- tables, which have succeeded to admiration. | The grass laid down extends to fifty or sixty acres, and is principally Indian rye grass The growth is almost beyond belief. There | are siready this year seven cuttings, at from seven fo ten tons the acre each cutting. Tne company maintain en the farm at present one hundred and eleven cows. all giving milk, and At one period of the present season they had two bundrea and seventy-six, but even then they did not feed off all their own grass. The company, when in operation, calculate on | realizing £750,000-a year. Assuming that all the sewage were well sold, it would be much more.’ Tee BALTIMORE ©. 5. PRESBYTERIAN SyNoD.—This body, now in session in George, town, D.C., has a field of 2.160 square miles, with 105 ministers, 121 churches, 11.445 mem, bers, 11464 childern in bible classes and Sab- bath schools, (59 admitted to une church on ex- amination, and 392 on certificate.
