EE THE EVENING STAR. AUCTION SALES, Drowning ovT A TENANT.—A Richmond Jsudlord nad a tenant who was said to be backward in paymg her rent—a mistortnae that 1s not always a crime. He gave her not:ce to quit. to which she paid no attention: and After various ineffectual efforts to get posses- sion of his property, he finally hit upon the following expedient to drown his tenant out: He bored an Angur hole in the floor x the room in which she dwelt, and then inserted & tunnel over it, and commenced pouring water down upon her devoted head, with the inten- tion cf filixg the room and forcing her to Jeave. A perfect deluge came throngh the funnel, covering tbe floor to the depth of @ foot or more, and forcing the inmate of the lower chamber to flee from the premises, lit- erally “to take water.” She expostula‘ed with ber landlerd, who, according to her ac- count, assaulted and threatened ner with vi- olence, for which she bad him arrested. He was held in the sum of $100 for his appearance before the Mayor to answer for the assaalt. SewacR oF Ort he agitation of the @uestion of economizing the sewage of London, has induced the Royal Society to institute in- quiries Into the modes of removing haman excrements from the large towns in Europe, particularly in Germany, where it appears ‘the question is as much agitated and as little fettled as in England or in this country. In Berlin, Dresden, Leipzic, Brassels, Antwerp and other citiee, is removal is effected by atax on the inhabitants. On occasion of some dis- cussion of this question at the annual meeting of the Society, a Mr. Howell madea suggestion whieh, on the principle that “charity begins at home,” ought to be considered im connection ‘with our regret for the immens= loss of fertile izing matter which ts lost in all our cities. “If it be the duty of our cities,” said he, “to tarn their sewage to account, it certainly is that of the farmer to take cara of the Hquid manure and house sewage at home. both of which at present generally go to waste. ” ArraiRs 1x Lovpox County, Va.—The Leesburg Mirror says: On Friday evening last, a little son of Mr. ‘Thos.
